VS 2008 Log-in User Levels
Jan 10, 2010i have a login form and it has 3 user levels - admin, manager & accountant - which have limited privileges using the system. For ex., if admin logged in, this user can access the whole system; if manager logged in, this user can only access the employee records; & accountant user can only access the payroll.
i actually have the idea but because i lack knowledge about vb.net, i don't know how to code it.

At the main menu, buttons are enabled & disabled depending on the user level that was entered.

Apr 8, 2010I have my forms all set up, I want a button on my main form that says Volume. When clicked it either opens a window above the current form with a volume control. Or opens another form that has the volume control in the center. When the slider is moved up to 100% windows is at 100% volume, when moved down windows volume moves down also.

Jan 12, 2010I'm looking for a recursive subroutine.I have the dataset from sql-server with in the datasource-table a parent- and a child-column.
I made a routine to put the parent-nodes in the tree.The problem starts with the childs over so many levels.I can write it out but it is to much code, I'm sure it can be done more efficient with a recursive subroutine.

Currently my treeview is a fixed 2 level approach but now I need to rewrite this to be more dynamic and support extra levels being added into our database tables.So this treeview needs to support as many levels as needed without having to rewrite any code each time we want to add new level, Ideally we will just insert the data at the database level.I think I have the database part designed correctly, I created 2 tables Menu and MenuItemsMenu has 2 columns ItemID and ChildIDMenuItems has 2 columns ItemID and Description Doing this query:

Feb 4, 2011With a steady tone feeding my audio input jack, the VU meters jump and bounce about 30%. I can also see the problem in the byte array of the capture buffer. I am running 8 bit mono so there isn't a chance that I'm getting a byte swap in a 16 bit word. My on board sound card is "Realtek HD Audio Input", direct sound 1.0.2902.0 and XP. Here is the real kick in the head, if I run anything that captures sound using the winmm library or if I use the winmm library in my application along with direct sound, the meters become stable. No errors are reported. Although I have written this in vb.net, I download another persons application that was written in C++ that uses direct sound with the same bouncing meters. I used the VU meters in Audacity to look at my audio levels and they are stable.

Nov 22, 2011I am working on a multiple choice quiz, admin screen, student login screen where they choose their level of difficulty. I have been able to start the quiz, have the questions and answers filled, user answers question, check if correct or not, if correct then the score is incremented.I am able to set up a variable for 'level' and want to write some code so that whatever is selected then that table / questions will be selected and displayed to the user.
The way I'm thinking at the moment seems very long winded. I think I'll have to write an IF ELSE statement/case statement for each of the 'navigaterecords' and the sql statment for beginners, intermediate and advanced.Assume there is a variable 'LEVEL' - have not actually done this yet. Where the code refers to 'advanced' is where I have been trying it out to select questions from the advanced table.

Set Up Different Levels Of Access In An Application Based On An SQL Table Of Usernames?
Sep 2, 2011I want to make different levels of access for a vb.net program i'm writing.I have a database called "stratocast". I want to show a specific form for entries in this table with "IsManager" checked and another specific form for those with "IsAdmin" checked.Im using MySql server and visual basic 2010 express
EDIT:To clear up any misconceptions about my post, ill explain further: In my vb.net application i have a login form with two textboxes; One for the username and one for password. I also have three other forms, one is called "frmAdmin", another called "frmManager" and another one called "frmEmployee".
On my database i have a table called "employee" with columns called "name", "title", "IsManager", "IsAdmin", "Username" and "Password".
IsManager and IsAdmin are both Boolean columns
This means that their values can only be 0 or 1 and the result is displayed as a checkbox.When the employee logs into this applcation i want it to check whether or not the employee is a manager, an administrator, or just a regular employee with no additional rights. If the employee is a manager, i want to show "frmManager". If the employee is an Administrator i want to show "frmAdmin". And if the employee has no additional rights then i want to show "frmEmployee".
I'd like to keep the configuration for access level checking confined to the one table but if it's better to have separate tables for each level of access (ie: tables called Admin,Manager, and Employee) then ill consider that too.

High-Performance TLS With .NET?
Sep 6, 2010I'm working on a project that calls for high-performance networking with TLS encryption in VB.NET. The stock SSLStream sucks rotten eggs; its 'asynchronous' read/write operations aren't async at all, meaning that they'll operate parallel to each other and to the main thread but that it offers absolutely nothing that resembles async read/read and write/write, which means that reads are totally synchronous to each other and writes are too (only 1 read and only 1 write can be done at a time).
I've done a lot of reading on this failing and it seems like MS has no intention of ever fixing this.Hoping a whole lot not to have to write my own TLS implementation. I've tried the Mentalis open source SSL suite, which will NOT compile. I've tried SocketWrench tools which will not compile under VS 2010 (and whose documentation indicates it's in fact synchronous on its async threads too; can only do 1 async read and 1 async write at a time).
What I want/need is an SSL/TLS implementation that actually works with DotNET that actually allows me to do multiple asynch reads/writes over a TCP/IP transport stream. Anybody have any experience or recommendations on 3rd party toolkits or alternate methods of SSLStream I/O?

Execution Time Too High?
Aug 15, 2011PFB the code for a search button where when a user enters a text in the text box ,it takes the keyword compares it with an xls which has 1600 rows and 16 columns with keywords.If the keywords match, it has to full the 3rd column where the name is specified.Its running but its taking more than 20-25 mins for processing.I knw searching 1600 rows and 16 columns will take time but pls advice if i can make this process a lil faster.

Jun 8, 2012I have been asked to improve the memory efficiency of an application that is used for high speed data acquisition. After running the VS memory profiler several times and scanning the projects for obvious issues I came to the following conclusion: despite using a fixed size circular buffer for storing acquired sample points, the RAM usage increases relative to the polling period. For example: polling data for one signal at 2 microseconds can use 5 times more memory (private bytes) than when running at 50 microseconds ... even though the buffer size is the same.
The circular buffer is an array of SamplePoint objects. Each of these objects contains an array of Shorts (16 bit) for corresponding data per signal and one date object (8 bytes) for the time stamp. For efficiency, the circular buffer is Redimmed only once every time it begins polling and filled with empty sample points which are then "assigned".
Also, it seems that when we stop and run the application it hogs even more memory each time as though the Redim is not releasing the previous array. My questions boil down to the following: What is most memory efficient way of implementing a circular buffer containing managed objects which have arrays?Also, how and why is memory usage increasing with a fixed size array with different polling speeds? Does the garbage collector not have time? Do local variables get disposed of IMMEDIATELY when a sub or function exits?These are some of the doubts and concerns that I would like to rule out before proceeding.

High Speed Socket Communication In .NET?
Aug 9, 2009I'm having some doubts on which communication protocol/platform would be better for my current development. The focus is on communication performance, and while reliability matters, I can handle a some packet loss. UDP sounds like the correct choice, but then the following question came up:
"What would be better, using a UDP socket directly in .NET, or using a UDP socket implemented in unmanaged C++ with a wrapper to .NET?"I'm quite sure that C++ is faster than .NET, and while the communication might be faster, I'm not sure if that performance improvement is not lost with all the C++-to-.NET wrapping?
Some info about the project I'll be using this on:
- The core of the project will be all made in VB.NET.
- There'll be a high packet sending/receiving volume (about 100-200/sec).
- There'll be many clients requesting data to the server.
- Network communication will be over a GB-LAN.
- Data is time sensitive, and some packet loss is accepted.
- Running on .NET 3.5.
Save A High Quality Jpeg?
Sep 2, 2011I want to make a wallpaper changer because windows high compresses the the image so you see artifacts even if already use a jpeg or even a really high quality png or bmp.
I know what I need to do for all of it I just need to know how to save an image to a jpeg without it being compressed. I have tried using the encoderparamters and getcodecinfo aswell as setting the quality to 100 but I still get a really bad looking image in the end.
Is there a way where I can save an image to a jpeg without getting the crappy image quality like with visual basic?
