VS 2008 Making Program Wait Until Event Has Taken Place?
Apr 1, 2011
I have an app that gets info from the internet into a label, the progam then decides which event will hapen depending on the info obtained, either load next form and continue or Application.Exit
My problem is that the speed that the info is returned from the net, varies and because the info is late sometimes the program exits when it should not.
I've created a schedule panel, drawing some lines, and adding some labels,as in image(blue, red and green are labels added by code). Now I've put some code to show the number for each cells, for that I've used Paint event of the panel but this slow the paint event, and after some investigation I found that the paint event was raised for some 20 time on my first form shown. Is there a place to put this code to run only once ?
Eg. ""vb.net" timer event trigger on purpose". This application is meant to run at all times to download a web page every minute. To avoid freezing the UI, I read that the best solution is to move the code from a While/Sleep loop to a Timer that will be triggered every minute. The problem I have, is that the user must wait for a minute before the event is triggered:
Private Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click Timer1.Interval = 60000 Timer1.Enabled = True
[CODE]...
Is it possible to force this event to occur instead of waiting for it?
I've made a gui for a cmd line program and I need to wait for the cmd line program to finish running before continuing.nd I have some code that starts the cmd line program and then calls a subroutine when it's finished running. But this method won't work since now I'm trying to run the cmd line program in a loop.Edit:Is there a way to just have the runtsmod subroutine (shown below) wait until the cmd line program is finished, instead of relying upon a subroutine starting when the cmd lineprogram finishes. This would simplify things greatly being able to call the sub tha starts the cmd line program and having it finish when the cmd line program is done.
Sub runtsmod() 'If the tsmod program exists in the directory the GUI is run from it is ran Dim tsmod As String = Application.StartupPath & " smod_GUI.exe"
I've created an AIO tool in Visual Basic and i need to create some code so when the application is opened it places itself in the computer startup folder. I know i can do it manually but i want to do it on school computers (restricted access).
With reference to my previous thread on Paint event handler.. [URL] I went to read up more on Paint Event Handler.. I have a button which draw out a path based on the user selection.. Below contains the drawing of the path portion of the button click event code
[Code]...
However It did not activate the paint event when I clicked on the button.. Instead, the paint event still activate even before I click on the button? So can anyone teach me on how to activate the paint event when I click on a button?
Like I imagine everyone, I often have problems navigating my code because the flow can jump from place to place. For example, if my code calls routine1, and I then want to go to routine1's code, I know that I can click in the dropdown menu and it will take me to that sub. But wouldn't it be easier if I could somehow right click on the call to routine way and select something like 'take me there' which would transport me from the function making the call to the code for the function being called? Then it would be easy to hop from place to place.
im new to programing infact this is my second day... im unsure of where to ask this question and i know this is probably not the hardest thing to do lol, i am making a "launcher" to launch a few games, a webbrowser and a few other things, however to do this i have a "set path" in the code, i want to know if anyone can help me make a "setup page" so the user of the launcher can set the path [eg]- to launch firefox i have If IO.File.Exists("C:Program FilesMozilla Firefoxfirefox.exe") Then Process.Start("C:Program FilesMozilla Firefoxfirefox.exe")not everyone has firefox installed to that exact location , so i need to make a settings page to set the paths, each file is launched buy a single button, in the future i may even make another program much the same for people who dont know how to use a pc nd just want to check emails and browse to a webpage.
I have a VB2005 application where the PC waits for data packages from a target. Part of the data package contains what to do next. I am using SerialPort1_DataReceived thread to pickup this data package and "looking" at and extracting the "next step" data from the package then go do it. The issue I have is I must exit the SerialPort1_DataReceived thread to do this and not do everything inside the SerialPort1_DataReceived interrupt routine. In C there is something like this:
Write a program that makes change for amounts less than one dollar. Input to the program should be an integer less than 100. Output should be the original amount together with the proper set of coins that add up to that number. The program should produce change consisting of the minimum amount of coins possible. The output should be printed in such a way as to avoid unnecessary amounts. For example:
32 cents should be printed as:32 requires 1 quarter, 1 nickel, and 2 cents Rather than 32 requires 1 quarter(s), 0 dime(s), 1 nickel(s), and 2 cent(s)
The projects I've made in VS 2008 and VB6 are pretty basic. I use VS 2008 now, and I was wondering how I could accomplish something like this:Let's say I want to make a toolbar and in the toolbar (under Options...) I want to open up a dialog box that will allow users to change preferences to the software I've made. Let's say, for instance, they can set the background color of the main form to customize their software a bit.
I'm trying to write some code that stops and waits for an event then continues execution. I want execution to wait for a mouse event and then continue. I can't just put the code to be executed after the event directly into the Click handler, because many different sections of code need to stop and wait for the event.
I'm making a notepad program and I'm trying to make it so when you press enter on the very left side in the RichTextBox, it'll tell you what line your on. For example:
I have code that just runs and runs, and I'd like it to stop and take a rest. I want execution to wait for a mouse event and then continue. I can't just put the code to be executed after the event directly into the Click handler, because many different sections of code need to stop and wait for the event. I'd like the code to stop, wait for the Click event, then continue. I tried the test code below, but it pretty much hangs the program during the Do Until loop; I can't even press Button2. [Code]
In my vb program, I have two forms that work together to allow you to define an almost arbitrary amount of designs. In the first form, there is a two-dimensional array, storing an integer (not important) and an ID class that I defined as a public inner class in another form. Clicking on the "Define ID" button in this form will take you to the next form, where you will define a new ID or edit an old one based off of an index in the array you selected or entered in the first form's combo box, using multiple fields in the second form to define its different aspects.
What I want to happen is the first form's code to be suspended as the user defines the ID in the second form, then they click on the Continue button on the second form. After a bit of error-checking, the form either is momentarily hidden (which is how I originally implemented it) or returns the edited ID object, but only if the error-checking does not indicate any input is incorrect.
Originally, I simply grabbed the ID by using newForm.curID and set that to its spot in the array, waiting for the user to finish by using newForm.showDialog(), but sometimes the program would return a null exception because I don't think I copy the IDs correctly. Also, though the errors show up for a small amount of time, the Continue button saves the ID regardless of its correctness. Is there a way to manipulate the showDialog to get a result response out of it?
Short version: I need to either return an object of an inner class in one form to an array in a calling form or wait for a form to finish and use the calling form to copy its object, then close the callee form.First Form's "Define" button method
Private Sub DesignButton_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles DesignButton.Click Me.totalCoilBox.Focus() 'calls validating method, makes textbox yellow if invalid' If totalCoilBox.BackColor = Color.White Then Dim newForm As New IVD_DesignData 'creates an object of ID called curID as well'
I'm currently making a code that will login to a cisco router, and show the version, then return the version to me. The connection to the cisco router is using telnet, and I'm using Dimac's w3Sockets code to Connect, login, and return data. Reference
But currently I'm having some problems, since the router sometimes need the login typed 2 times, or having a key pressed to update the terminal(telnet),meaning i have to check if it gets logged in or not. But the problem is that using dimac code, i can only wait() and waitFor(), and if it none data comes whilst waiting, it keeps on waiting. Is there away to do like: "if wait fails goto"
I've tryed "on error goto", but since its not a error, but just keeps waiting, that dont work. Also, To locate where it gets stuck I have it write to my textbox everytime it takes a step in the code, but its like the dimac code overtakes vb.net. ex: If i send some text to a textbox in the same sub as the connect code is, and it gets stuck at a wait, it dont even write to the textbox, eventhough the textbox.text command was suppose to execute before the wait().
Code:
Private Sub telnet(ByVal port)
TextBox3.Text = TextBox3.Text & Environment.NewLine & "Telnet func Called" 'Cant execute this if it gets stuck at login below. ?? Try
ok I have a program that controls another program.. but sometimes the other program is not running.. so I ask the question "do you want to run it up" so if they it takes like 15 seconds to come up.. so really I dont want to do much on my program while we wait for that other program to finally come up..
normally when my program comes up I make sure the other app is running.. and it would come up before you would click on something to try to call it.. but during the day.. maybe their app crashes.. so then right before I try to make a call to it I will check if its running.. so I want to run it up but kinda put a hold on my code while it waits..
so whats the best way to do this ? stop my code.. call a timer and when it see's its up call again ?? or can I put in some wait in the code then continue... just looking for the best method people have used..
I am making a small game of pong and i want to incorporate a pause feature. is there a way i could freeze the form in place and then unfreeze it later at the push of a button. the tutorial i used is below so check it out to get an idea of what i've made so far.
Code is below. I am designing this code to transfer a file at a specified time. Right now, I have it sending me an email when it succeeds for test purposes. It will be only when the file copy fails later.
Here's my question: how can I get the program to wait until the file copy is complete to report success or failure? Right now I'm using exists to see if it works, but some other method of checking the file will be built in later. Eventually, this will be deployed to various locations for a bit of automated backup.
I built a console application with a loop at the end,[code]in the loop when the user press "q" on the keyboard, the program will go out of the loop, I've tried using Console.Read or Console.ReadKey which is not working because it waits for the user to press the keyboard, but I need the loop to keep running although the user is not pressing the keyboard so in the program the console will be like: AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA,etc. until the user press "q" on the keyboard,
I have been working on something that checks an MySQL Database to check something - however the program stops responding because it is constantly checking the database. Is it possible to have it wait a few seconds to recheck the database? [code]...
In my program, if something goes wrong an ErrorForm is supposed to show up and tell what was going wrong.
And if the error is a "fatal type", then I want the program just display the ErrorForm (which gives some information about the error), wait for a button press, and then close the program (terminate run).
In case of error, the form is displayed.. That's good.
But as the program is supposed to terminate after showing the error form, the error form disappears immediately after showing up (so it doesn't allow the user any time to read what's going wrong).
How can I make the program wait until a button press (on the error form) and then terminate?
While navigating to a series of sites at one site the WebBrowser control's DocumentCompleted EVENT is tripped and no other recorded Browser events occur after that. When this happens the hour glass cursor indicates the browser is waiting. From this point it take 120 to 250 seconds of wall clock time before the browser resumes. I am looking for a way to force an abnormal termination without destroying the control. I have tried "Stop", "nav to about:blank" repeatedly without success. How can I force an abnormal termination when the Cntrl is in a wait state?
Consider the following: The last known Browser event to be tripped is a Document Complete event; nothing else occurs after this. When this transpires the Cntrl is waiting.

How to make a program wait until a button is clicked by the user. I want to stop my sequence of codes (statements) until a button is clicked by the user.
