My error is occurring within the RecieveData() method near the bottom and has something to do with threading.

So here I am asking you out there again for some help. I want each user that logs in to have a different color font for there messages. I believe it would have to go in the recieve messages from server part of the code. Can you please assist with the code and where exactly I would put it. View 3 RepliesOne of the companies I support has a group of people on an isolated network. No access outside their subnet at all. They are on multiple floors and have asked if they can get something like Office Communicator, they don't have email and are tired of making phone calls every 5 seconds. Only there is no budget for Office Communications Server, they are cheap. I can't find any instant messenger programs that connect two computer directly so I thought I would write my own, seems like it would be fun. All the samples I have found on here are more like chats then direct communication between two computers.

I would REALLY like to give credit where credit is due because alot of the source for this was borrowed from the write up on here but I don't remember where the write up is located or who wrote it so please if you have a link to it post it. Thank you again to who ever wrote it. Any how on to this. I have expanded the origional messenger I found on d.i.c to include multi-user "chat" if you will. It is still a basic p2p messanging system because you can only talk to one person at a time but you can speak to multiple people in the same window. So far I have been able to get it to work across our LAN here at the office but am wondering if I can change the text file locations to an FTP some how and make it internet based. I am sorry for the uncommented code as I was in a rush cranking this out but it is fairly simple so you should be able to read through it with ease.[code]

View 2 RepliesI'm working on a project where I make a automatic messenger from VBnet. I want to program a simple one that responds to certain words or phrases. However, I only know the rough basics of If...Then commands. I have a lot of problems:
1. How do I make it so the messages typed in the box actually goes up into the script box when I press send?
2. How do I program a slight delay in the computer's answer?
3. How do I set a name to the computer and to me?
4. How do I make the script goes into scrolling when it runs out of space.
5. If possible, when I type an equation in the box, can I program the computer to solve it and display the answer? I'm a beginner so I don't really know the overall organization of this project. However, I would like it to remain as simple as possible.

1st if it can't find the physical pc it is trying to connect to it crashes.
2nd if it finds the physical server but not the program (server) running it says "the computer actively refused the connection on IP/Port" and then crashes.

Basically I am doing a weekly assignment for unit 7 where I have to use Data bases.... I have everything going fine I used VB studio to set up most of my relationships between the Data base and VB.I have a text box called txtLast4OfSSN.Text that I need to get the last 4 of a social security number.
Now this should be simple I have another box ( a Masked Box for SSN) that has the SSN in it... This box is called m_SSN.Text....... Now I figured it would be easy, and that I could just use the Substring(7, 10) to get those numbers :*( However its not working and I am getting an error as follows:"Index and length must refer to a location within the string. I have my program that runs from a workstation and the SQL DB is on the SERVER.I am having a lot of problem with it as the VB.NET program wont refresh the dataset.I would like to test the same by putting the SQL DB on a network drive, and run the program from another workstation.Just to narrow down the problem.My Question is this. I install the SQL DB on machine A and then install my program on Machine B?
What should I do to get Machine B to access the SQL DB on Machine A.Will sharing the SQL FOLDER be good enough for my program to access the DB of course, I have to modify the connection string on my program, but other that is there anything more to be done.

How can I retrieve the server name (the computer program installed) with .NET?
Also, sharing the "Program Files" folder doesn't look like a smart idea for making the program accessible from the other computers.
