VS 2010 ListView - Cross Form Command Not Working
Jul 28, 2009
I currently have 2 forms, one with a listview and the other with a button coded to add an item to the listview. I've just discovered though that any command, no matter how right the syntax, to a form from a different form doesn't work. The only command that does work is Form2.Show. Otherwise nothing happens. There are no errors whatsoever. All the items in each form are all set to public.

I've not got any issues with Cross threading but I hate the amount of work involved in sorting cross threading issues out.I thought today that my inherited Listview Control could have built in cross threading capabilities; it would decrease the amount of work on the form, and tidy things up.I've got this to work (EnsureVisible method), BUT I'm a little stuck when it comes to the Items.add below is my example control.

[Code] If I wanted to add 3 icons, the LV would add them like it normally would, but then, for some reason, it enters the loop again and that's when it throws this error: ex = {"Cross-thread operation not valid: Control 'ListView1' accessed from a thread other than the thread it was created on."}. I don't understand why, because I'm invoking the LV.

I've run in to a very annoying situation. At the moment I have a program with 4 forms. 3 of these forms work fine, but the fourth seems to be a dud. After clicking any one of the buttons or controls on this form it works. But if I try to click anything again, it doesn't work. I can't use my back buttons, I can't even use the minimize, maximize and exit buttons in the top right corner which are automatically built in to the program. I fear I have accidentally changed a setting, or accidentally deleted some very crucial code for this

I am trying to send a command to the external command line (cmd.exe) from the Windows form application that I'm writing in VB.NET (using VS2008).
I can only access the external program thru the command line (its not my program) and I must do so from a form app.
I am trying to use the following code. I am able to call a cmd.exe window, but I can't pass the command line my command.
Using mp As New Process
With mp.StartInfo
.FileName = "cmd.exe"

I have a piece of code that takes two strings, puts them together, then attempts to save that result into a table in a database. For some reason, the database is only showing the second half of the string ( Me.txtRev.text in this case). When in debug, I can see that newRev is actually correct, with the hyphenated string.
Dim newRev As String = Me.revs(0) & "-" & Me.txtRev.Text
Try
Dim sqlSOPDept As New SqlClient.SqlCommand

I have been making a text based noughts and crosses game and trying to convert an alpha grid reference into a number to run the logic sequence that decides whether the an input is valid. I am using the asc command to convert but it just keeps putting up the error: Conversion from string "a" to type 'Double' is not valid, when it reaches the line If (Asc(Left(choice, 1)) >= 65 And Asc(Left(choice, 1)) <= 67) Or (Asc(Left(choice, 1)) >= 97 And Asc(Left(choice, 1) <= 97))Choice is the input and has already been checked for length, whether it contains an alpha and numeric input (and where they are) and whether the numeric value is valid.

why the doc.Save("filename.xlm") might not be working? Trying to do a simple routine - just loading an existing xml file and saving as another name onto local C: drive. Seems to run ok ie no errors, but the file doesn't save. 'Save' part of the doc.Save command is coming up as a different type colour in dreamweaver.
Also, secondary problem, getting error if use a long directory name in the doc.Save destination filename - comes up with 'URI formats are not supported'

I'm experimenting with the sql command builder and it seems to do nothing when trying to update existing rows. If I create a new row and then add it then it works fine but I cant seem to update an existing record.
Heres what I have at the moment
Code:
Dim strConnection As String = "Server=myServerSQLExpress;AttachDbFilename=C:databasepath estdb.mdf;" & _
"Database=testdb; Trusted_Connection=False;User Id=sa;Password=test;"
[CODE]...
But I'd really like to find out why its not working when using the command builder. I'm working with VB.net 2010 express and SQL server express.

My Find/Replace Edit Menu command inside VB 2005 is not working anymore, and SQL Server 2005 as well. When I tried to check this feature in Microsoft Office applications, there is no problem at all. It's mysterious, I don't know what happen. I also tried to re-install VB and SQL, but still it didn't work.I know it is a petty problem, but it plays an important role when editing your codes.

I am getting some cross thread operations not valid when I am trying to run my code. I am handling a button click event to execute a method that runs a process to do a file converison, when the process is finished I run another method that converts the file to zip format, when that is done I run a method to upload the file to a ftp server, and when that is done I run one final method to update my database and the dataset; however, it is liking the way I am running these and I am getting cross thread errors and an overflow error when calling the fillBy method of my table adapter.
Here is the basic outline of what I have:
Private WithEvents conversionProc As New System.Diagnostics.Process
Inside the click event I call the method:
conversionProc.Start()
Then I handle the exit event of the Process as:
Private Sub conversionProc_Exited(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles conversionProc.Exited
' Once the Process to convert has finished it will exit - Flag that we created the KML file
kmlCreated = True

I'm learning VB.NET coming from a VB6 and Java background.In my app, I've got a function that validates the fields on a form. All it is doing is reading them, not updating. I've searched and see info about the backgroundWorker class, but all the examples are about updating the fields.I understand the idea of threading and how it works, but have never written code that spawned threads myself. I've always let the language handle it. It seems like a lot of work that I would have to write a sub using the backgroundWorker for every time I wanted to read or update each field. The couple of books I've got that introduce you to the language show you reading or updating the field directly.How do I know what threads are running other than writing the code like I'm used to then running through debugger to figure out what variables are on which thread?

In addition to the shapes you can create with the code from this thread. [URL]. Here is code to make a control or a Form into a vertical cross shape. This will show you how you can do it in Vb.Net 2008 and 2010 using extension methods. The following post will show how you could do it differently in Vb.Net in other versions as well as Vb.Net 2008 and 2010.
1) From the PROJECT menu select
ADD MODULE.
2) In the NAME box type
CrossShapedThings.Vb and then click on OK.
3) PASTE this code in.>>
Option Strict On
Imports System.Runtime.CompilerServices
Module CrossShapedThings
<Extension()> _
Public Sub MakeCrossShaped(ByVal aControl As Control, Optional ByVal CrossWidth As Integer = 10)
