I'm developing a TextBox Component that is suited for handling passwords. I was using A string Builder to hold the password But now I discovered the Secure String! It is Perfect for what I want to do except one Problem! How do you get it back to a normal string! I've heard you can convert it to a BSTR and then use windows API to read the memory location and convert that to a string.

View 2 Repliesin my application, I am pulling in items from a microsoft project file using mpxj - one of the items I need is the predecessors. The way I am able to pull the predecessor is using a build in function of mpxj which returns a type of java.util.list - I can save this to variable as an object, but I need to find a way to bring the data to a format I can easily use so I can store it into a database. Listed below is the line of code I am using to pull the predecessors from the project file.

and here is the result when putting a tracepoint in to get the value of predecessors

Even if I could get the above as a string, I could work with it enough to get the data I need. The above example is where there is 1 item in the predecessor list, but sometimes there are multiple items. Here is an example of the tracepoint when there are multiple items.

I want the Function to accept List(Of String), Array & String and similarly return List(Of String), Array & String respectively. The Function simply adds a string (month) to the input collection. I just want to use it for string, array and list with needing to think of conversions.

I would like to create a secure login page for a pre-defined set of users (so no creating username/passwords by the users themselves). I've looked up a few sites and they all seem to suggest using Microsoft's Membership or something. I am not very sure as to why that's used, but all you need to know is that I will be creating the login details. I just need to make the login secure, ie, no duplicate logins, no logins from different browsers and cookies and sessions and encryption and all that. Any one have the code/links to where I can get all this?
View 1 RepliesI've never really used the SecureString class before but I've got a requirement in an app to have a user enter a password that will be used later in the application, and I figure SecureString is the most secure way to do this.
I have created a little dialog form where the user will enter their username and password and have set the UseSystemPasswordChar property of the password textbox to True. As I need to keep the password in memory for use later though, I have created a property in my main form that is of type SecureString and when the user enters their password into the dialog window I copy the string from the password box to the SecureString property like so:

I figured out how to get the original string back when I need to (with only a slight hint from the documentation I might add ), which I do like this:
Dim OriginalString As String = Marshal.PtrToStringBSTR(Marshal.SecureStringToBSTR(Me.ConnectionPassword))
but the problem I have is that I want the user to have the option to edit the password they already entered if they want to. This is a problem because I want to avoid putting the real password back into the password box for security reasons, but then if I just put some random characters in there (just to show that their password has been remembered by the app) and then the user clicks OK on the login diaog form then it will update my ConnectionPassword property and set it to the random characters.
One option would be to set the passwordbox text to something specific each time and then test to see if that is what the text is set to when they click Ok (and if it is then obviously dont update the ConnectionPassword property) but this seems pretty rubbish because its possible (however unlikely) that the user could actually select that word as a password.
Any better suggestions? Perhaps its not worth doing anything at all and just use a normal string as the SecureString is going to have to get converted back to a normal string at some point to be used.
I got an app, which receives data via a R232 port, convert it to a string and on the other side I got a database, where the strings are saved. How can I find a way to compare the string with all strings in one database column and get back the another stringform the same row in this database. I never programmed a database

I use AddHandler button.click, AddressOf mysub.The issue is that mysub gets a string (mysub(string)), but AddressOf doesn't accept a parameter inside the routine. How can I do this? Using also an alternative to AddressOf.

I have a field that I display via: String.Format({0:c},amount) This produces the string "$28.28" However, when I try to convert back to a decimal amount, I get an incorrect format exception: amount = Decimal.Parse(amount.Text, NumberStyles.Currency) I also tried it with NumberStyles.AllowCurrencySymbol with the same results. I verified that the value in amount.Text is "$28.28". Am I missing something? Shouldn't these two operations use the same currency symbol and formats?

I need a regular expression that can validate that a string is an alphanumeric comma delimited string.
Examples:
123, 4A67, GGG, 767 would be valid.

Problem: Your task is to take input from the user in string and give the following options to the user in a menu.
1- Find a String
2- Create sub-string
3- Erase a portion of a sting
4- Replace a word in the string
5- Count number of words and characters in the string without spaces.
6- Capitalize first character of each new sentence and convert the rest

7- Sort all the words in alphabetical order. (Use Bubble sort algorithm to perform sorting).
To perform all the above mentioned tasks you can only use pointers. Create a function to perform every task.
So strings are reference types right? My understanding is a reference to the string in the heap is passed even when you pass the string ByVal to a method.

when i transfer the bytes sent by the client program to a string the string length is affected.when i put the bytes sent by the client program to a message box. it returns the corrrect text. but when i check the length it will return 8192 or higher. but the actual size is just 5.
