Speed Up CSV File Process?

Mar 31, 2009

I wrote a VB.net console program to process CSV record that come in a text file. I'm using FileHelpers library

along with MSFT Enterprise library 4. To read the record one at the time and insert into the database.

It took about 3 - 4 hours to process 5+ million records on the text file.Is there anyway to speed up the process? Has anyone deal with such large amount of records before and how would you update such records if there is new data to be update?

edit: Can someone recommend a profiler? prefer Open source or free.

VS 2010 Launching New Process & Detecting If That Process Has An Error Message

Nov 19, 2011

I am working on a small VB application that listens for commands sent from an Android app.

One of the functions is to extract an archive. I am familiar with how to listen for the unrar process to finish, so I can display a progressdialog on the phone while the extraction is happening, and clear it as soon as it's done.

BUT ... if there is an error/alert from WinRAR, WaitForExit() never gets called because WinRAR is still sitting there open until I click "OK" on the MsgBox.

For Example ... if you try to extract a file that is not actually an archive... an alert will pop up saying "No Archives Found", and basically everything is halted on the VB app and the Android app, and the Android app just sits on a progressdialog saying "extracting..." until you manually hit "OK" on the computer.

As you can imagine, this is a problem if the whole point of your app is to NOT have to go over to the computer.

So... I am wondering if there is something similar to WaitForExit() that will wait for an error and allow me to close out the alert and let the process end.

Here's my Sub for the UnRar command:

Private Sub UnRar(ByVal WorkingDirectory As String, ByVal filepath As String)
Dim objRegKey As RegistryKey
objRegKey = Registry.ClassesRoot.OpenSubKey("WinRARShellOpenCommand")

VS 2010 - Speed: WebClient Versus Socket

Apr 25, 2012

I make a lot of programs that require an internet connection to download things from the web.At the very beginning, I used WebClient, as I didn't know Socket & how it worked.But now, I use Socket all the time, altough it's more lines of code. It seems to work faster then WebClient.I am interested if this is really true & why WebClient is slower (so is HttpWebRequest) then just a Socket.I've setup 2 threads which starts on the click of a button (WebClient thread starts first), the Socket beats the WebClient by just some milliseconds, but still.Each way has it's advantages & disadvantages, e.g.: if you use Socket, you need to write the header yourself & parse the response header.My question is, which one do you prefer & why ?Do you know why WebClient & HttpWebRequest are slower then Socket, as I assume, WebClient & HttpWebRequest both use tcp to download the things.

VS 2010 Program Logic To Speed Up Processing

Mar 29, 2011

I have setup an application to parse about 3000 files a day where each contains around 4000-5000 posts in xml format with like 100 fields. It involves a lot of cleanup and parsing but on average it takes around 6 seconds per post. Now I tried threading but because of the way I have everything set up with variables being overwritten etc...I have divided the files into different folders and just created copies of the program to run and access the assigned folder. It is running on a windows 2008 server with 16 G of memory and I am told I need to reprogram to speed up the process and also not use so much memory.

VB 2010 Express - Randomize A Numerical Output To RS-232 With Speed Control

Jan 17, 2012

I have a USB device that is "seen" as a COM Port. It has eight channels, each require a single character to turn ON/OFF. It's a DLP-IO8 for reference. I have the COM port part working 100%.

1-8 turns ON each channel (12345678)

Q-I turns OFF each channel (QWERTYUI)

Truth table for device:

1 = Ch1 ON | Q = Ch1 OFF
2 = Ch2 ON | W = Ch2 OFF
3 = Ch3 ON | E = Ch3 OFF

[Code].....

a loop that I can still use the functions of the form (change speed or Stop loop).
a way to utilize Q-I to turn the channels OFF in random mode

I've been searching for a few days with little luck. I've tried Do Until, Do While loops and a few others.

I've only been coding for a few days now so go easy. Learning as I go. My form for reference

Ultimately I'm trying bring my PC Interface project up to date by going from a parallel port to USB.

VS 2005 Windows Services - Process Is Listed As A SYSTEM Process Rather Than A Process Under User Name

Jun 4, 2009

I have written a windows service that is meant to launch a notepad when a specific action happens. The problem i have is that even though the service launches notepad, the actual notepad it self is NOT visible. I know that it has been launced because i can see the process in the task manager. By the way the process is listed as a SYSTEM process rather than a process under my user name (i believe that is because my process is a "LocalSystem" one).

VS 2010 Attaching To A Process?

May 28, 2011

I want the program I am making to show the cursors position on the process it is attached to. Sorry if this is a lot to ask for. Can you tell me how to.

1. Make a drop down menu with the list of process.

2. When i click on one of the processes, my program attaches to it.

3. When I move the cursor over the process, my program tells me the co-ordinates of the mouse on the process.

4. When i press F3, Timer3 Starts.

5. Make the mouse move to a co-ordinate on this process.

If it is too much to ask for, can you just tell me how to do 1 of them and hopefully someone else will tell me to do the others.

Launch And Watch A Process From .NET 2010?

Mar 9, 2011

I am working on an application that needs to launch Microsoft Word, and then resume when the user closes Word. The code below should work, but it does not. I get an 'object not set to an instance of an object'

1 Dim pInfo As New ProcessStartInfo
2 Dim P As New Process
3 pInfo.FileName = "C: estLLR.doc"
4 P = Process.Start(pInfo)
5 ''# Here is where it goes bad
6 P.WaitForInputIdle()
7 P.WaitForExit()

I put p into the watch window and it shows a a system.diagnostics.process in the watch after line2, but after line 4 it return to NOTHING. The process launches, but I can not monitor it any longer with lines 6 & 7. Is this a 'limitation' of Visual Studio 2010 or am I making an operator error? The MS Help does not show process available in the 2010 version (it is in Visual Studio 2005 and Visual Studio 2008).

VS 2010 - How To Exit From Thread / Process

Apr 10, 2012

Basically, I am just trying to close the thread/process after it's done.

Private psi As ProcessStartInfo
Private cmd As Process
Public Delegate Sub InvokeWithString(ByVal text As String)
Private Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click
Dim psi As New ProcessStartInfo("m7.bat")
[Code] .....

I am trying to close the thread so once it's done, it closed for good and my form is closed as well. I tried Me.Close() which results in: "Cross-thread operation not valid: Control 'Form1' accessed from a thread other than the thread it was created on." Error.

Me.Invoke(New InvokeWithString(AddressOf CloseME), e) - Results in parameter mismatch error.
However, things like Msgbox("Done") works perfectly.
