ADO.NET, Datareaders And VB.NET Speed?

Feb 28, 2008

currently writing a standard 3-tier (gui/business layer/data layer) winforms application in Visual Studio 2008.I have a form which has to load around 20 different sets of un-related data when it opens. My data layer returns seperate data readers to the business layer and each routine uses seperate sql connections (it opens them, gets a data reader, and then closes it).Now the problem i have is the speed the data is being retrieved. For a relativly small amount of data (around 100 rows of data combined) it's taking say 10 seconds to retrieve, parse into seperate collections and then paint to screen.My form is using controls from Infragistics and Component One and is quite heavy anyway

Anyway To Speed Up Form Loading?

Dec 3, 2002

Does anyone know of anyway that it would be possible to speed up the process of loading forms.With VB6, forms (simple ones) was extremely fast but with VB.net, the initial loading of a form (even the simplest one) takes very long. Although it gets better once it's loaded once and the reloaded the next time (almost instanttaneous), but the first time loading gives a bad impression to any user that .net is actually much slower.

Comparing Speed Between A Function?

Nov 19, 2009

I just did a little test, comparing speed between a function and the same thing but using a byref value instead.

Public Sub New()

Dim timespanFunction As TimeSpan
Dim timespanByRef As TimeSpan[code]....

So using byref is more then a second quicker in this case. So why does function actually exist? Is it just to make programming more easy and your code look nicer? The most important things of a application are Usability and Speed right? So why trade speed for nicer looking code?

DataGridViewColumn Iteration Speed?

Jun 13, 2012

I have noticed that when iterating DataGridViewColumns, the speed is greatly reduced if the columns are visible.

For Each col As DataGridViewColumn In cData.DataGridView.Columns
col.Visible = visible
Next

If visible is set to false (and all columns are all currently visible), iterating 264 columns takes around 0.35s, however, if visible is set to true (and all columns are currently invisible), the same process takes around 30s.Does anyone know what would be causing the extra time?Could it something internal to the DataGridView Control?

How Can Speed Up My Loading Time

Feb 5, 2008

I was currently writting a Cyber Cafe for the client side which start up with a form that maximize and block all the client control like shortcut key and other security. It's fine to work in my pc and it take only about 5 second to startup the application and lock the client. But when i run the application in a pc that installed with games, it took about 40 second to run my apllication. I notice in task manager panel, the process need to read the whole application before it could load my first form. Is there any idea i can speed up my loading time? I have try to set the process priority to "real time" and startup using batch files, but it still need 30 second to load my first form.
