VS 2010 VB Can't Seem To Handle Object Or Attachment Dbs Fields?

Feb 15, 2012

I have just loaded an access 10.0 database into my VB project as a dataset.Two of the tables contain an Ole object field and an attachment field (the data in the fields are described by the field types). All of the data contained in either of these field types, when observed in the dataset, show a warning and indicate that it is unable to display that data. As might be expected, when the data is called in a gridview, anything from those fields throws errors.

I would like to know if there are any known issues with these types of fields and VB, and if so what might be done to resolve that.

Handle An Object's Object Property Changed Event In .NET Windows Forms?

Jun 7, 2012

I know how to handle a single objects property changed event very easily. I want to handle a objects property changed event that is part of another object.

Given Object:

[ObjectY = Y]
+ Public WithEvents X As ObjectX

I would like to do something like:

Private Sub XPropertyChanged() Handles Y.X.PropertyChanged

Right now I need to create a object that equals the object inside that object and then handle this variable pointers property changed, but that is just annoying.

Ole Object Fields Don't Work

Feb 15, 2012

I just pulled an access dbs that contains obj fields into a VB project in a gridview in a windows form. when the form is called I get an error message on the gridview: System.arguementexception: parameter not valid.

I have no idea what is going on, but it is apparent that the OBJ field data is not carried over into the dataset. The data in the OBJ fields consist of shortcuts to applications.

Handle When COM Object Is Disconnected From RCW?

Feb 15, 2012

Is there any way to run code when COM object is about to be disconnected from RCW without implementing IDisposale interface and explicit call MyObject.Dispose in client code?

The code below is not working. When program enters Finalize sub, ExcelApplication is already disconnected from RCW, and I get error. I understand why it happens, but I want to get a solution.

I want to make it working the following way: when last managed reference is released, code from Finalize sub is executed before COM object is disconnected.

My question is - is it possible at all and if it is then how can I handle this event inside the class, without need to call Finalize explicitly from outside?

Very simple class:

Public Class ExcelRunner
Dim ExcelApplication As Excel.Application
Public Sub New()

Dependent Object Will Not Return Data For Extended Fields In TPT

Jul 22, 2011

I am using TPT modeling and writing the EDMX by hand as our data model is much more complex than the designer can support. My model includes a ProjectObject which has a dependent object name Project. When I query ProjectObject.OfType(Project) using Linq to SQL, I receive back data in all the fields that are inherited from ProjectObject, but no data in the fields that only in Project. I have ran a SQL Server Trace and captured the actual SQL and ran it using SSMS and it returns data there, so I am relatively certain the data is being passed back, but it seems to be getting lost somewhere in EF. Everything appears to be ok in my model, but . . .

Populating Object Properties Depending On Fields In A Data Row?

Jun 29, 2010

Let's say I have an employee class with ID, Forename, Surname, Initials and Email Address properties.

At present, you can construct an Employee object by passing a data row which, typically will include all these fields. However, sometimes I only want the ID, Forename and Surname but still want to populate an object.

[Code]...

However obviously if certain fields are not present in the data row, I will have an error. Is there a quick way of populating the object based on the fields that are present within the data row without a) having to have separate subs for each circumstance and b) without having to try / catch (or something similar) around each property? I know other languages have options like this - where if there is no value, it will be another value (i.e. a default).

Use TextFieldParser Object To Handle Reading In The Data

MS Access 2007/2010 Attachment Field Retrieval And Storage

Dec 16, 2011

I'm opening this discussion up primarily because I felt that it was inappropriate that Samir Ibrahim and I had hijacked another thread by turning it into a collaborative development thread. This thread will also hopefully serve as a searchable reference for those few who actually make an attempt to search the forum for information before posting a question. For reference the original thread I mentioned is [URL]

This thread is meant to be a repository for our continued collaboration on trying to find a way to update the attachment field using the OLEDB class. Samir believes that he is close to cracking the secret code.:)

Attachment retrieval and updating is a fairly trivial task using the Microsoft Access Database Engine. It is also fairly trival to retrieve the attached files using OLEDb as well. The difficulty comes when trying to add or delete an attachment with OLEDB.

The attachment field is actually a record set where each record consists of six fields. One of these fields is the data field that contains the binary file data. According to the documentation, Access will compress certain file. It appears that compression/decompression is handled behind the scenes so to say and what you are present with is sequence of bytes. The data field consists of sequence of header bytes followed by the actual data. The first four bytes define an offset to the start of the data. One thing that we are trying to determine is the meaning of other bytes in the header.

I have uploaded a sample project at: [URL]

This project is by no means a finished product. It is hard code to retrieve the first record from the included Access database.

Object Handle Events Fired In Other Objects Without A Special Sub?

Jul 28, 2010

I've been thinking about my options when it comes to events in vb.net.What I'd like to do is to track events that are fired in an application without explicitly declaring them with 'handles' sub. Here is a pseudo-[code]....

Yeah I know, not quite working, but is there any way of implementing something like this in vb.net? My end game is really to be able to monitor events fired in many objects from another object, isn't there a more maintainable way to do that then to add a special sub in each object that handles the event that I want to catch? I need some way to let one object handle events fired in other objects without a special sub, the AddHandler goes a long way, but I can't really use that dynamically like so:[code]....

One Routine To Handle Multiple Events In Arraylist Class Object

Oct 17, 2011

I want to use One routine to handle multiple events & i want to give the list class object to the routine handle clause in vb.net. Is it possible? I have 100 buttons on my web page & i want to handle click event of each button. I have same coding on each button but the only difference is that, which button is calling the event handling routine. So i want to make one sub routine for handling event of all my buttons.

I can solve this by writing each button name in the handles clause like - Private Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles ImgRCP_26.Click, ImgRCP_27.Click,. But it is so lengthy procedure. So that why i want to handle my button in the arraylist. How to do this?

Adding Multiple Attachment (files) To A Dynamic Variable So It Can Be Send To A Email. VB 2010

Oct 27, 2010

What to use for adding multiple attachment to a email. I'm using VB 2010.

First, I have a Form in my company web site to fill a reclamation ..... when you fill and send it, it convert the form into a PDF, save it in the client side "TEMP" and finally get the PDF and send it to a email..... that's perfectly fine. I add to the form the capability of attach multiple files with file upload to the same "TEMP" and displayed in a Grid View to remove or add files and send everything to a email, the attachment capability is working. Everything is working with the PDF not the files(attachments).

There is a way to get the multiple files from the "TEMP" folder and add it to some dynamically variable (array list, attachment collection, list collection, etc.) so all can be send to the email. I already know the way to put it into the email with the PDF.

The problem is to get the files and add it to the dynamic variable and that it work with the email. If the code is need it.

.net - Handle Null Nested Objects In RDLC Report That Is Bound To Custom Assembly Object Datasource?

Aug 27, 2009

I have an RDLC report that I am rendering directly to the Response Stream as PDF (rather than using the ReportViewer). In the code that renders the report, it's DataSource is bound to a List(Of ClassA) objects defined in a custom assembly. This seems to work for the most part. My problem is that I can't seem to handle the situation where a nested object is null. For example, given ClassA and ClassB (the nested object) defined as follows:

Public Class ClassA
Public Id As Integer
Public Name As String

[Code]....

the report displays "#Error" if TheNestedObject is null. If TheNestedObject is not null, it correctly displays the Name.

Refactoring A Module Into A Class: Changing Shared Fields To Instance Fields

Nov 14, 2011

I'm currently refactoring an old Visual Basic DLL (VB.Net), which stores all of its data in one module called Globaldefinitions as public fields. There are about 200 fields, referenced thousands of times all around the code:

Public Module Globaldefinitons
Public a As Short
...
Public zz10 As Double

[Code]...

I need to change the module into a class with non-shared fields. This means, each and every of these thousands of references needs to reference the instance of that class:

globalDefinitionsInstance.a = 5

How do I go about this efficiently?

Regular expressions operating on the source fall flat. Refactoring tools like Re-Sharper or CodeRush don't seem to offer this functionality. Visual Studio 2010 cannot do it automatically either.

Can The Initialization Order Of Class Fields In .NET Be Influenced By References To Other Fields

Jun 19, 2011

Class Foo
ReadOnly name As String
Public Sub New(name As String, dependentUpon As Foo)
Me.name = name

[code]....

The output of New Bar() is:

Dependent created. Dependent upon nothing.
Independent created. Dependent upon nothing.

It seems fields are initialized in the same order as they appear in the source code, which (a) leads to an unexpected result, and (b) seems a little puzzling, given that one is normally not permitted to read from uninitialized variables in .NET, yet that seems to be working fine above.I would've expected VB.NET to be smart enough to initialize referenced fields first, and only then those that reference it; i.e. I'd have liked to see this output instead:

Independent created. Dependent upon nothing.
Dependent created. Dependent upon Independent.

how to get VB.NET to behave like that instead, without simply having to swap the declaration order of dependent and independent inside class Bar?
