VS 2010 Use The VS Hosting Process For Debugging?
Dec 31, 2011
I'm just starting to use VS 2010 - not sure if this was available in VS 2008 - but I was reading about the Hosting Process you can start for debugging.This allows you to call methods and jump into breakpoints in them without starting the whole app running.

This is all VB2008. I'm working on a plugin for an app which expects it's plugin dlls to be named something other than "dll" (in this case, it wants them named with a ".plugin" extension. I can compile my .net dll just file, copy it and rename it to *.plugin and move it over to the application folder, Run the app and everything works just fine.
But I can't debug the dll in VS. VS doesn't know that I copied it so it can't load that DLL and attach to it's process for debugging. I've searched for ways to change the default extension of files that VS builds, but so far haven't turned up anything. Even just a way to attach to the process once it's renamed to *.plugin.

When I go to Debug my program (F5), the program will load, until I click on the form with the main part of code in it, and then the program freezes, although it doesn't lock up because as soon as I press stop debugging/ task manager end process, it closes fine.
I will attach the zip of the program here. The form that it freezes on is "Black Ops". Edit Due to the forum not accepting my .Zip file (Invalid file type), I will upload it to MediaFire. Download link (445kb): Click Here

I'm having to write a reporting application that gets information from some Interbase servers and it also has to work on Vista as well as XP, I'm using to connect Borlands Data Provider.[code]My Issue is that debugging on my xp Machine the dataset gets filled, debugging on my vista box it fails ("Interbase provider initialization failed"), my initial thought was that this could be UAC related but I've compiled the application and 'ran as admin' and still same issue. (by the way it failes on the line Dim da as BdpDataAdapter...)

I am working on a small VB application that listens for commands sent from an Android app.
One of the functions is to extract an archive. I am familiar with how to listen for the unrar process to finish, so I can display a progressdialog on the phone while the extraction is happening, and clear it as soon as it's done.
BUT ... if there is an error/alert from WinRAR, WaitForExit() never gets called because WinRAR is still sitting there open until I click "OK" on the MsgBox.
For Example ... if you try to extract a file that is not actually an archive... an alert will pop up saying "No Archives Found", and basically everything is halted on the VB app and the Android app, and the Android app just sits on a progressdialog saying "extracting..." until you manually hit "OK" on the computer.
As you can imagine, this is a problem if the whole point of your app is to NOT have to go over to the computer.
So... I am wondering if there is something similar to WaitForExit() that will wait for an error and allow me to close out the alert and let the process end.
Here's my Sub for the UnRar command:
Private Sub UnRar(ByVal WorkingDirectory As String, ByVal filepath As String)
Dim objRegKey As RegistryKey
objRegKey = Registry.ClassesRoot.OpenSubKey("WinRARShellOpenCommand")

Prior to VS 2010 I was able to debug VB6 client code from the .Net IDE by setting "Start External Program" to vb6.exe (full path), or attaching to the running vb6 executable via "Tools->Attach to Process" and have execution stop at the required breakpoints in my .Net code.
Now with VS 2010 I seem to be only able to accomplish the same by setting the target framework to 4.
Is this a bug in VS 2010, or is there a switch/option that controls this?

I had written an app that runs at ever login (win7). So as it is running I load 2010 Express and try to test some things, but it comes back and says "The operation could not be completed. The Process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process."How is that possible when the 2010 Express should be fully contained? I have even named it completely different from the originally application. Am I missing a setting?

Sometime when I press the run (F5) Start debugging button it does nothing. Often when I have jsut run it and made a quick correction. If left for a while it will then work! Have tried it with simple and complex projects.
Using W7 x64 - never had this problem with VB 2008 express.

I have a client/server application using the .Net 2.0 Framework. I'm using Visual Studio 2008 to build and manage code.When I run either a Debug or Release version of the application simply by starting the .exe, I get an insert statement on the database that tries to insert a "0" for the foreign key of a table, triggering an error because the primary key of the other table is not 0.When I run the application by hitting the play buttton ("Start Debugging"), the insert statement uses the correct foreign key.In the first case, this happens even when I "Attach to Process" to the Debug version after it's started. My question: what's the difference between attaching to the debug version of the application after it has started and starting the application from the debugger?

I'm testing my Visual Basic .net application by running it in Visual Studio express.Sometimes it runs OK, but other times I get an exception (details below, if useful). I'm not sure why I get the exception as the particular part of the application that I am testing re-uses code that works OK for other features.
What should I check, what would give me a hint as to the root cause. Things I tried so far are: Rewriting some of the code to be more robust. The outcome of this was that this approach was getting out of control - I was correcting everything. I made changes such asing alternative libraries (e.g. replacing CInt with convertTo etc). Some lazy declarations, but it occurred to me that there was no problem with these with the code before my changes. And every change I seemed to solve uncovered yet another problem, another different exception So I thought something must be fundamentally wrong with my installation, and a search found discussion group posts from people experiencing something similar. The suggested remedy would be to re-install the .net framework. So I did that and the problems still occured.
Any thoughts on approach to get to the root of the problem? I'm not asking for a solution but some fresh ideas would be very welcome.

I posted a while ago asking how to manage correlative updates: url...I made that post under the assumption that the direct link i had in place (an attachment on a google site) would not change. Unfortunately I overlooked the fact that google sites use redirect links, just a hair short of direct links. I've heard of FTP Protocols and noticed threads in the c# sections on how to code them, but I don't know much about them. I really need an internet access link for my pgroam to download the file from and am not sure on what the best approach is to this problem. Please advise...I seek not answers, but understanding, that I may not solve, but learn.

We have a form that hosts the WebBrowser control. That is the only control on the form.We pass the form the file path of a temporary PDF file and it does:WebBrowser1.Navigate(Me._PathToPdf)When the form is closing, it navigates away from the PDF file:
WebBrowser1.Hide()
WebBrowser1.Navigate("about:blank")
Do Until WebBrowser1.ReadyState = WebBrowserReadyState.Complete

I've created a WCF service and, with help of others from this site and the department I work in, the WCF service is running as a service on my development machine. Tested it with a console app and it works.But, it's not supposed to be on my development machine. It needs to be on a different server.This is difficult because the server it is supposed to reside on DOES NOT have Visual Studio installed on it.So I cannot run the VS 2008 Command Prompt with installutil to run the WCF service as a service on that server.

I have a Winform UC packed in a CAB and hosted in an aspx web page using the <object> tag. In IE7, things work. But in IE8, no matter what settings I choose, the control never gets installed. I need to point IE8 to the CAB, download it, unpack it, and run the installer in the client machine, outside IE8. The UC is fairly complex, and requires several DLLs (third party components). The control reads data from hidden fields in the hosting page, and calls javascript functions on the page.

I have written a windows service that is meant to launch a notepad when a specific action happens. The problem i have is that even though the service launches notepad, the actual notepad it self is NOT visible. I know that it has been launced because i can see the process in the task manager. By the way the process is listed as a SYSTEM process rather than a process under my user name (i believe that is because my process is a "LocalSystem" one).

I am currently hosting an IE Browser control in a .NET (2.0) Form and using it to load Office files such as Excel and Word thusly:[code]The hosting and loading works well except whenever I navigate to a file I am presented with a dialog that asks whether I want to save or open the file. (This is standard IE file-download behavior.) I always want to open it of course and I do not want the dialog to show.Another issue is that when I close the window that hosts the IE control and the Office doc the document does not close and remains open on disk. This means that subsequent attempts to open the same file via my app or the native office app will fail because of the sharing violation.Is there a programmatic way of avoiding this dialog and cleaning up resources afterward? I am asking for a programmatic answer because web research has only yielded solutions that entail modifying OS-level settings.
Host an Excel spreadsheet inside my application.Work rather transparently (avoid usability issues like the one described above)Avoid having to make any OS-specific changes that may affect other applications (especially icluding IE)Is zero additional cost (no licensed 3rd party libs please) Code Project and other open source resources are OK.Not mess around with the DSO Framer ActiveX control, unless a stable version is developed/discovered

In my Visual Basic 2010 project, I want to send a series of plain .txt files to somewhat of a database where they can be stored. The best way I can describe it is like an email system with attachments. The information that is being sent is not sensitive information therefore security doesn't matter, I would like to receive it and add it into a database. Is there any place where I can send these text files to in an email(attachment) like fashion but without needing to enter credentials first? If so, could you please assist me or guide me in the right direction?Sending the information through email would be swell, however this would require the user to first submit their email information which defeats the purpose of the what I'm trying to do.
