Prior to VS 2010 I was able to debug VB6 client code from the .Net IDE by setting "Start External Program" to vb6.exe (full path), or attaching to the running vb6 executable via "Tools->Attach to Process" and have execution stop at the required breakpoints in my .Net code.
Now with VS 2010 I seem to be only able to accomplish the same by setting the target framework to 4.
Is this a bug in VS 2010, or is there a switch/option that controls this?

View 2 RepliesI installed VS2008 ona newVista Ultimate 64 Bit machine. Works great. But if I try to change some VB2008 code while debugging, the system says, "Changes to 64 Bit applications are not allowed". Why is this? And will programming on a 64Bit machine always be hampered like this
View 4 RepliesOn my last machine I had created a way to see a GUID variable while debugging by hovering over it. I don't remember what it was (a visualizer?). I have a new 64 bit machine with vs2008 - is there anyway to mouseover a guid value and have it appear? What makes guid's so special that their value doesn't show like most variables?

View 1 RepliesWhen I end my app by pressing the stop button in visual studio, is there a way for that event to trigger some exit code? I'd rather do that than include a visually distracting quit button.
Better still would be to program some kind of key sequence, eg control + q to trigger some quit code so my app can exit cleanly. Is this possible? I wouldn't know how to program a key shortcut but it might be handy.
I am converting an old asp project to a new .NET project. Now, all vb code are inside aspx files, and we are on the process of moving all vb script from aspx files to .vb files. My problem is, I can't debug the vb script inside most of the aspx files. All my friends don't have this problem. I think the problem is with vb text editor.I am using Visual Studio 2008. Is there anyway, I can make visual studio understand that aspx files have vb script inside them.

My problem is that when I debug the VB6 program, the first time InitSomething gets called, the event will not be handled (the VB6 event handler is never entered). Subsequent calls to InitSomething does work.
Everything works as I would have expected when I run the program outside the debugger. At this point, I'm not even sure if this is something I should be worried about.It may or may not be relevant but the VB.NET was converted from a VB6 using the Visual Studio code conversion tool (and subsequently manually cleaned up).

There has to be a setting for this somewhere, but for the life of me I can't find it. When I "Start Debugging (F5)", if there is an issue with my code, I get a "Build Failed" notification, in the lower left of my screen. I would like to be directed to the location of the failure. So far I have been lucky and have been able to find the offending code but this is getting scary .

When I run or debug the code, it asks for the First Number and then just completes the running of the program without asking for the second number and uses some random number. The console.readline() doesn't work either, the console window just disappears.
I am trying to create a ListBox in which every item can have it's own context menu. To do this I have created the classes as shown in the code. Now when I test this, I get the following error when adding an item to the collection using the 'Add' method:

I'm just starting to use VS 2010 - not sure if this was available in VS 2008 - but I was reading about the Hosting Process you can start for debugging.This allows you to call methods and jump into breakpoints in them without starting the whole app running.

So as it is running I load 2010 Express and try to test some things, but it comes back and says "The operation could not be completed. The Process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process."How is that possible when the 2010 Express should be fully contained? I have even named it completely different from the originally application. Am I missing a setting?

It happens quite frequently, more times per day, that with Visual Studio 2010, during the debugging, when I used Immediate commands like:I receive the following error:

I'm testing my Visual Basic .net application by running it in Visual Studio express.Sometimes it runs OK, but other times I get an exception (details below, if useful). I'm not sure why I get the exception as the particular part of the application that I am testing re-uses code that works OK for other features.
What should I check, what would give me a hint as to the root cause. Things I tried so far are: Rewriting some of the code to be more robust. The outcome of this was that this approach was getting out of control - I was correcting everything. I made changes such asing alternative libraries (e.g. replacing CInt with convertTo etc). Some lazy declarations, but it occurred to me that there was no problem with these with the code before my changes. And every change I seemed to solve uncovered yet another problem, another different exception So I thought something must be fundamentally wrong with my installation, and a search found discussion group posts from people experiencing something similar. The suggested remedy would be to re-install the .net framework. So I did that and the problems still occured.
Any thoughts on approach to get to the root of the problem? I'm not asking for a solution but some fresh ideas would be very welcome.

I'm currently debugging a form that sets a flag when the mouse button is pressed, then clears the flag when the mouse button is released. As long as the mouse button is pressed, the user can move the mouse around and a few things happen depending on where they move. One of the things that happens is that a timer starts, or stops, and a few things change color depending on the mouse position. The timer starts when it should, then stops when it should, but once stopped, it is not re-starting when it should. I can verify that MouseMove events are getting through, because coloring changes as I move the mouse, as it should. This would be a simple thing to debug...except that it requires the darn mouse button to be down, and it uses the mouse move event. Anybody who has put a breakpoint in a mouse move event handler knows the issue: There are THOUSANDS of them. Worse yet, since the mouse button is necessary for switching to the IDE, as well as setting a breakpoint (technically, a keyboard shortcut could do this if I could shift focus), I can't wait for the problem to happen, then switch to the IDE and set a breakpoint to see what is happening then.Does anybody have any tips or techniques for debugging in mouse move events when the mouse button is down and has to stay that way? As it is, I'm going to have to write some funky code into the method just so that I have a place to get a breakpoint when I need it without breaking on every one of the mouse move events.

I had a weird series of errors involving e.Graphics.DrawString() when painting a panel.I am using a barcode font [Code 128] with a library that converts text to the proper format for Barcode readers.That's fine, however, when I draw it to the panel, that's where things stop being fine:But, here's where things get funky. When I put it into a TextBox instead of drawing it via Graphics.DrawString(), everything is peachy:In fact, the TextBox one looks much better than the Graphics.DrawString() one! View 2 RepliesWondering if it is possible. It works on the idea that all files share common code. The program would ideally analyse the source file and compare it to the reference files. It would then find common parts of the code and write it to a rebuild file. At the end the rebuild file and the reference files would then be able to rebuild the source file without it being present.
For Example.
source file code = xxyyzyzyxw
ref file 1 = xyxxzyzxwyy
ref file 2 = zxxwyzzywxx
The program would then analyse these files and make a rebuild file like the following
source(0,1) = ref1(2,3)
source(2,3) = ref1(10,11)
source(4,7) = ref2(5,6) + ref2(5,6)
source(8,9) = ref2(2,3)
Thus you would be able to build the source file using these instructions and the reference files.
when i put, for example, a picturebox in form and code some events. then i want delete that picturebox. well the code stills there. imagine that i use another picturebox i use the same name. now if i double click on these picturebox, the code editor recreates a new subs. can i disable these situation?
