VB 2008 & Debugging Simple Code Runs With Variable Assignments Left In Memory?
Sep 16, 2011
I'm running VB2008 on Windows 7; I've written out a ver simple piece of code:
Option
Explicit
On
Module
[code]....
When I run or debug the code, it asks for the First Number and then just completes the running of the program without asking for the second number and uses some random number. The console.readline() doesn't work either, the console window just disappears.
i wrote a piece of code to write some data to a card reader, and read back from that device, filling a form with the data (after reformat). When I step through the code while debugging (using F5, F8 for stepping forward) the form is filled correctly. However, when I run the code (Ctrl-F5), the program seems to hang for about 5 sec and then throws an exception: 'Length should be >0' When looking further during debug - it seems that the program calls 2x the Sub Frm_Read_Display(). I
Imports System.Windows.Forms Imports System Imports System.IO.Ports Imports System.Threading
I am trying to work with classes and variables and don't seem to understand some behavior that is going on.
first off the class Public Class csSession Public ID As Integer Public Name As String End Class Usage and behavior (example code) Dim S1 as new csSession Dim S2 as new csSession S1.ID = 1 S1.Name = "1st Session" S2 = S1 S2.ID = 99
When I assign S2 = S1 all the values of S1 passes to S2 but also there is a "link" or bond between the two variables now. If I change the values of S2 this automatically changes the values of S1!! Why does this happen and how can I prevent it? I just want to pass the variables values contained S1 to S2.
I've created a form with a PictureBox on it and would like to dynamically create another PictureBox on the form while the program runs (to the left of the static one). I've written this code:
Dim temp As PictureBox temp = New PictureBox temp.Image = StaticPictureBox.Image temp.Visible = True
[code]....
When I run this code I can detect that the temp PictureBox does get created. However, it is not rendered onto the form. It seems like it's there but is invisible.
I have a database with about 180,000 records. I'm trying to attach a pdf file to each of those records. Each pdf is about 250 kb in size. However, after about a minute my program starts taking about about a GB of memory and I have to stop it. I tried doing it so the reference to each linq object is removed once it's updated but that doeow can I make it clear the reference?
Private Sub uploadPDFs(ByVal args() As String) Dim indexFiles = (From indexFile In dataContext.IndexFiles Where indexFile.PDFContent = Nothing
I don't use VB.Net very much, still mostly do VB6, but I am doing this project in .Net. I have a huge string of data, 168 Mb that I stream in from a file to a string variable. Then I have to perform a number of replacements on it before using the data to compile statistics. Because of the nature of the data, I can't break this up into smaller strings.
The problem is that I get a system out of memory error after a few replacements.
I've used both Replace(x,y,z) and X.Replace(y,z). The second one gets a little farther in the code before it crashes, but they both crash.
When I run it in the IDE, the IDE is using about 130 Mb of RAM, the Exe of the app is running about 350 Mb, and one svchost.exe runs about 300 Mb
Other than that there are no major RAM uses going on. The PC has an i7 980x cpu with 12 GB of RAM.
I'm editing some code and moving stuff around doing a lot of cut'n'paste while writing and the intelli-sense slows to a grinding stall then eventually I get a message from my OS saying that I'm low on Virtual Memory and I haven't even run the compiler yet, still only in the IDE. ??? I 'unchecked' the 'enable Visual Studio hosting process' on the properties->Debug tab when this happened before and now I don't know what to do because VB won't run at all for more than half an hour making writing impossible...
Any right direction for best practices of memory allocation. (i.e., disposing of forms, setting variables to nothing). I am writing a program and for now, I just monitor it in Task Manager. I notice that the size change isn't very balanced. The amount of memory used when a new form loads isn't as much as when that same form is closed. (either by button or by the 'x'). I want to get a handle on this before I get too deep in the program.
I am working in vb express 2008. I got some sample code from the site www.vbhelper.com and tried to implement it as it is. Debugging of the code gave following errors:Error 1 'Protected Overrides Sub Dispose(disposing As Boolean)' has multiple definitions with identical signatures.

My project uses a lot of System.Drawing.Image commands and sometimes it gives me the out of memory error. I was wondering if there's a way to check remaining memory left and to halt a process if there isn't enough? Or if there is a more practical solution?
I got a function that reads memory of another process and then uses it in different ways. To prevent the GUI from lagging, I start a new thread and executes the code in it. It runs fine, but after a while, aprox. 20 minutes, the applications stops to work and an OutOfMemory exception pops up. The thing is that the memory use of the application isn't higher that 10mb and I can't notice any high increaments either. I have tried everything to find out what is wrong, but it seems to be impossible.
I'm making a simple game. I want simultaneously go up and left.
Private Sub Form1_KeyDown(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.Windows.Forms.KeyEventArgs) Handles Me.KeyDown ' If e.KeyCode = Keys.Z Or e.KeyCode = Keys.Up Then
I have a service that i believe has a memory leak in one particular sub routine but I cannot find out why.The routine writes data to an opc server every second. It receives a command via tcp, connects to the database for verification of signals and writes the data. When it completes it writes a message back. I am disposing of everything i can think of but for some reason when I check it in the morning then memory has increased dramatically and the cpu usage goes up to 50%. this only happens to the service when I start the client application that sends the data so i know it has to be in this routine.
I have declared a class in VB.NET using VS2K5 with some shared variables and made that class a dllI made use of that dll in another project and tried to make use of those variables. Even though I can able to make use of them, Im unable to view the values of those variables like the values of normal variables when Im debugging. Is there any way that I can watch the values of those shared variables during debugging.
I have got some code that is working as i have edited the game.exe at a certain address, now i know the code can find the address, but I don't know how to make it stop searching for it if it isn't there.
here is the:
code:
So what I want to know, is how to stop this code, if the address doesn't exist.
When debugging in the old VS 2008 with the program stopped at a breakpoint, I could hover over a variable, say a string, and the value of that string would appear in a little box by the mouse pointer. In visual studio 2010 beta 2 this doesn't appear to happen. Is it a feature that needs 'turning on' somehow?I've tried debugging in 64 bit mode and x86 mode, neither works.
I've got a vb.net 2005 form that calls a stored proc to load a combobox with eligible sales reps. There are approximately 40k sales reps available...I know that's a lot, but that's what I'm dealing with. I'm trying to figure out why it's taking this form 15 seconds to load.
Here's my code:
Want to load this in the most efficient way possible given the HUGE amount of data that my client is wanting to see.
I am using Microsoft visual basic 2010. I am using the following code to connect to a local access database. After the line myReader = cmd.ExecuteReader () no code runs. I am not receiving an error message.
Dim connectionString As String = "Provider=Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0;data source=C:UsersmikeDocumentsFCE_Database.mdb"
[code]....
I have used this method to connect to the same database multiple times in the same program without a problem I've also tried using OleDb with the same result.
Having recently installed IIS Express I was hoping that it was going to make life easier for me, but I've run into a problem almost straight away.Consider the following which is representative of some live code:
Public Shared Function GetServiceId() As String Dim principal As MyCustomAuthentication.Principal.MyPrincipal principal = CType(Thread.CurrentPrincipal, MyCustomAuthentication.Principal.MyPrincipal)
[code]....
Running the code under the ASP.NET Web Server (Cassini) everything is fine and I can see that Thread.CurrentPrincipal is of type MyCustomAuthentication.Principal.MyPrincipal.Running under IIS Express this same line throws an InvalidCastException and checking the type I find it is now of System.Security.Principal.GenericPrincipal which is confusing as nothing else has changed.I can confirm that MyCustomAuthentication.Principal.MyPrincipal implements IPrincipal and remember this is Live code, it is currently deployed and working.
I installed VS2008 ona newVista Ultimate 64 Bit machine. Works great. But if I try to change some VB2008 code while debugging, the system says, "Changes to 64 Bit applications are not allowed". Why is this? And will programming on a 64Bit machine always be hampered like this
I cannot use Visual Basic 2008 at all. When I go to "new project" and choose "Windows Form Application" I get this error.I have tried multiple uninstall/reinstall with no result.A microsoft reply to this suggested that I needed: " .NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 1 " I checked, and I did not have the .netframework 2.0 service Pack 1. When I tried to download and install the above from Microsoft.com, the istaller said that "it was not allowsed" and I was not able to install the service pack 1.
I tried Uninstalling net framework 3.5, 3.0, 2.0 and then reinstalling .netframework 2.0 sevice pack 1; then reinstalling Visual basic 2008 express edition. At the reinstall of Visual basic 2008, .netframework 2.0 sevice pack 1 is unistalled by .net framework service pack 2.When I check the foruims for simiar problems, the formus are mostly for Visual basic 5.0, or other programs that I do not have.
Here is the programs I have installed:
Operating system: Windows XP Microsoft .net framework 1.1 Microsoft .NET framwork 1.1 Hotfix(KB928366) Microsoft .Net Framework 2.0 Service Pack 2
[code]....
All the security updates and hotfixes for Widows XP.
I once heard about a software that could dynamically run dotnet instructions (C#, if I remember well) on its command line, e.g when entering 1==1, the output would be true.I don't remember the name of this soft, and sometimes one just wants to know the result of a given instruction, without having to create a new program, compiling it and run it...
I would happily take the challenge to make a soft like this on my own later, but for now on I'd just like to find this soft.Does anyone know its name, or another app which would achieve the same result? (Don't tell me PowerShell, I'm searching for something more handy.
EDIT For those who use Visual Studio and who didn't know (I just learnt about it), you can also use the Immediate Window. It even allows you to get intellisense in some cases.
On my last machine I had created a way to see a GUID variable while debugging by hovering over it. I don't remember what it was (a visualizer?). I have a new 64 bit machine with vs2008 - is there anyway to mouseover a guid value and have it appear? What makes guid's so special that their value doesn't show like most variables?
I dont where am going wrong but when i am programming i will make some changes to make code and form e.g add a button or something. Then when i go to debug my program my change dont appear and its been a couple of days and my changes still dont appear when i debug my program.
