Code Runs When Debugging But Stalls In Run Mode?

Jun 15, 2011

i wrote a piece of code to write some data to a card reader, and read back from that device, filling a form with the data (after reformat). When I step through the code while debugging (using F5, F8 for stepping forward) the form is filled correctly. However, when I run the code (Ctrl-F5), the program seems to hang for about 5 sec and then throws an exception: 'Length should be >0' When looking further during debug - it seems that the program calls 2x the Sub Frm_Read_Display(). VB 2008 & Debugging Simple Code Runs With Variable Assignments Left In Memory?

Sep 16, 2011

I'm running VB2008 on Windows 7; I've written out a ver simple piece of code:

Option
Explicit
On
Module

[code]....

When I run or debug the code, it asks for the First Number and then just completes the running of the program without asking for the second number and uses some random number. The console.readline() doesn't work either, the console window just disappears.

Release Mode Runs, Debug Hangs?

Sep 25, 2011

I have an x86 VS2010 app running on a 64 bit machine that hangs in debug mode. Both the interpretive version and the compiled debug .exe hang. If I step through the interpretive version it runs. The release mode works fine. Doesn't seem like system memory is a problem as I'm reporting 1.8 gig free after I load the app. I've googled this and don't see anything pertaining to debug environment specific behavior. Is there a limit to what the debug .exe supports?

Random Numbers Behave Differently In Debugging Mode?

Oct 15, 2011

I use some random number generators in a piece of VB.net code to simulate Gene reproduction. It works as followed:

- I generate a male chromosome that contains 46 random chromosomes which I put in the Arraylist: MaleChromosomes.

- I generate a female chromosome that contains 46 random chromosomes which I put in the Arraylist: FemaleChromosomes.

- Then I have a piece of code that randomly picks 23 chromosomes from the female arraylist and randomly picks 23 chromosomes from the male chromosomes ( Very simple simulation of reproduction ) and put these in the arraylist: Child

- I repeat this for the second child ( Arraylist: Child2.)

- Now I have piece of code that compares these arraylist to see how many chromosomes the two children share.

Here's my code:

.net - Live Code Runs In IIS And ASP.NET Web Server But Not IIS Express?

Apr 21, 2011

Having recently installed IIS Express I was hoping that it was going to make life easier for me, but I've run into a problem almost straight away.Consider the following which is representative of some live code:

Public Shared Function GetServiceId() As String
Dim principal As MyCustomAuthentication.Principal.MyPrincipal
principal = CType(Thread.CurrentPrincipal, MyCustomAuthentication.Principal.MyPrincipal)

[code]....

Running the code under the ASP.NET Web Server (Cassini) everything is fine and I can see that Thread.CurrentPrincipal is of type MyCustomAuthentication.Principal.MyPrincipal.Running under IIS Express this same line throws an InvalidCastException and checking the type I find it is now of System.Security.Principal.GenericPrincipal which is confusing as nothing else has changed.I can confirm that MyCustomAuthentication.Principal.MyPrincipal implements IPrincipal and remember this is Live code, it is currently deployed and working.

C# - Software (or CommandLine) That Dynamically Runs Dotnet Code?

May 4, 2012

I once heard about a software that could dynamically run dotnet instructions (C#, if I remember well) on its command line, e.g when entering 1==1, the output would be true.I don't remember the name of this soft, and sometimes one just wants to know the result of a given instruction, without having to create a new program, compiling it and run it...

I would happily take the challenge to make a soft like this on my own later, but for now on I'd just like to find this soft.Does anyone know its name, or another app which would achieve the same result? (Don't tell me PowerShell, I'm searching for something more handy.

EDIT For those who use Visual Studio and who didn't know (I just learnt about it), you can also use the Immediate Window. It even allows you to get intellisense in some cases.

.net - While Debugging VB Code In VS2008?

On my last machine I had created a way to see a GUID variable while debugging by hovering over it. I don't remember what it was (a visualizer?). I have a new 64 bit machine with vs2008 - is there anyway to mouseover a guid value and have it appear? What makes guid's so special that their value doesn't show like most variables?

Code To Run On 'stop Debugging'?

Aug 25, 2010

When I end my app by pressing the stop button in visual studio, is there a way for that event to trigger some exit code? I'd rather do that than include a visually distracting quit button.

Better still would be to program some kind of key sequence, eg control + q to trigger some quit code so my app can exit cleanly. Is this possible? I wouldn't know how to program a key shortcut but it might be handy.

Debugging VB 2010 & VB6 Code?

Jun 25, 2010

Prior to VS 2010 I was able to debug VB6 client code from the .Net IDE by setting "Start External Program" to vb6.exe (full path), or attaching to the running vb6 executable via "Tools->Attach to Process" and have execution stop at the required breakpoints in my .Net code.

Now with VS 2010 I seem to be only able to accomplish the same by setting the target framework to 4.

Is this a bug in VS 2010, or is there a switch/option that controls this?

The application is a server application but when it loads it goes through our internet explorer. If I could reveal the source code then I could get the ElementbyID to hook up the button to the text field in the application. When the application loads I can quickly right click on view the source code and it is written in C#.This is one of the id's i was able to grab

id="upEnvironmentHidden" value="PRODUCTION"

How can I make it possible to view the source code of this application...also the internet explorer will dissapear and then the application is launched.

Forms :: Checks If Certain Variables Have Been Flagged And If So Runs Relevent Code?

Mar 23, 2010

I've almost completed my first VB.Net app which is a rewrite of an old vba app I wrote. The last part that I need to write is the timed events part. What I have in VBA is quite straightforward.Every 500ms the Timer event runs through, it checks if certain variables have been flagged and if so runs the relevent code? Code is nothing major, just updates a networked device.I've looked into timers in .net but it seems like there are various routes that I can go down.

Is there anyway, I can make visual studio understand that aspx files have vb script inside them.

Debugging - Handling VB.NET Events In VB6 Code?

May 12, 2009

I have some VB6 code that instantiates a class which handles events that are being raised from a VB.NET component. The VB6 is pretty straightforward:private m_eventHandler as new Collection

public sub InitSomething()
dim handler as EventHandler
set handler = new EventHandler
m_eventHandler.Add handler
m_engine.Start

[Code]...

My problem is that when I debug the VB6 program, the first time InitSomething gets called, the event will not be handled (the VB6 event handler is never entered). Subsequent calls to InitSomething does work.

Everything works as I would have expected when I run the program outside the debugger. At this point, I'm not even sure if this is something I should be worried about. It may or may not be relevant but the VB.NET was converted from a VB6 using the Visual Studio code conversion tool (and subsequently manually cleaned up).

So far I have been lucky and have been able to find the offending code but this is getting scary .
