I am attempting to teach myself VB and write a parental control application at the same time, so my learning curve is rather steep. However, I have managed to complete the design of the application with no design time errors, and to my untrained eye, all my code looks like it should work. Unfortunately, when I attempt to debug the thing, it returns an error that looks like Greek to me. I have traced to line numbers I found mentioned in it, but I couldn't find anything wrong. I just need someone to point me to the part of my code that isn't working, and maybe give me an idea of how to improve it.
The project consists of 3 forms: MainForm, WarningForm, and AboutForm. The 1st and 3rd are self explanatory, the 2nd is simply a message popping up telling the windows user that they have 10 minutes before they will be logged off of windows. I cannot imaging why any of the codes on the 2nd or 3rd forms should be causing this issue since they don't activate until either a button is pushed (AboutForm) or after a certain number of hours has elapsed (WarningForm). So unless someone feels that it would be helpful, I won't post those on here.

I keep receiving an "Access violation at address xxxxxx. Write of address xxxxxx." error when i close my MDI form (and hence my application).However this error only occurs after i have created a new child form.
I have stepped through the code and found that the exception is being thrown in the Settings.Designer file (Namespace My module). This is the chunk of code that throws the error[code]...
When I am in break mode, I cannot update code.I receive message "Cannot currently modify this text in the editor. It is read only." Can anyone explain why I get this message?

View 2 RepliesI use some random number generators in a piece of VB.net code to simulate Gene reproduction. It works as followed:
- I generate a male chromosome that contains 46 random chromosomes which I put in the Arraylist: MaleChromosomes.
- I generate a female chromosome that contains 46 random chromosomes which I put in the Arraylist: FemaleChromosomes.
- Then I have a piece of code that randomly picks 23 chromosomes from the female arraylist and randomly picks 23 chromosomes from the male chromosomes ( Very simple simulation of reproduction ) and put these in the arraylist: Child
- I repeat this for the second child ( Arraylist: Child2.)
- Now I have piece of code that compares these arraylist to see how many chromosomes the two children share.
I've built a windows form application that steps through a wafer map and sends a command to ink specific dies if the bin number is between certain values. While debugging I have run into an issue with the program crashing with no error message anywhere. While stepping through my code, the place the program stops has occured in two different places but both in the same subroutine in the code I use for the network communications. Below is the subroutine I've seen it break on with the two places it has broke indicated.

I have an VB ASP.NET (.aspx) file that has deeply nested logic and I'm getting lots of build errors like "If must end with a matching End If" and "Do must end with a matching Loop". How do I begin to debug this beast to at least get it to build?

View 2 RepliesI have read many many forums regarding the error message "No symbols have been loaded. The breakpoint will not be hit." I had this error message come up a while ago, so I opened a previous version of my project, and copied the newest version of the code I am working on into that project. Then when I debugged, everything worked fine...for a while. Then I got the error message back, so I did the same thing again, and who would have guessed the error message returned, out of the blue. I am working on the program and it works fine, then suddenly one time when I try to debug with a breakpoint I get that message again. So I did some more research and I found a post that recommended looking at the Modules window while debugging (under debug > windows > modules). And in this window under my project, it said "Cannot find or open the PDB file". However, I compared this to the previous version of the program, that works fine, and I noticed that under Path, for my project, the path that I see is not the path where my project is located. So what I am asking is can someone please tell me how to change that path to the correct path where my files are actually located? I believe that if the path is correct, it will find and load the symbols.

View 2 RepliesTrying to debug a Windows application, in the Immediate Window, if I type the following:?UBound( I see a tooltip showing the syntax of UBound, but when I complete the statement as ?UBound(CBa) where CBa is the name of an array, I get the response: Name 'UBound' is not declared. Strangely enough, the UBound function is referenced in the code prior to the breakpoint, and works correctly. Why can't I use it in the Immediate Window? I have the same problem with the Len function, it says it's not declared.

View 10 RepliesMy colleague and I have recently upgraded our projects from .NET Framework 1.0 and VS2002 to .NET Framework 2.0 and VS2005. We also applied the latest VS2005 service pack.
Our problem: normally when debugging we use the QuickWatch window to drill down into and view collections of objects belonging to the parent object we are "watching". THIS NO LONGER WORKS...instead, we get a message in the value line against the object collection saying:"In order to evaluate an indexed property, the property must be qualified and the arguments must be explicitly supplied by the user."This is incredibly frustrating, particularly when we have large nested collections of objects.We are pretty sure this feature was working fine after we upgraded, but we are not so sure that it was working after we applied the VS2005 service pack.
I've been searching all over and unable to find a way to do this. I'm not sure if it is possible but thought I would ask. I have a program that runs in the background and hooks the keyboard keys to perform actions when a hotkey is pressed. However I don't want it to do anything if the forground window (of another application) is in edit mode so if you map the v key, the user will still be able to enter it in a text box. Is there a way to detect if the forground window or control is currently in edit mode?

I downloaded and installed the Symbols from MS, set my Project to use the Folder where I installed them, etc. When I start Debugging, I can see at the bottom of my IDE window that it is loading Symbols at a rapid clip, until it gets to It stops, and I have tried waiting 15 minutes to no avail.

I designed my program for my screen resolution (1680x1050) with all forms in maximized mode. I gave the program to a freind whose laptop has a lower screen resolution than mine. Now on a lot of the forms she cannot see some of the controls because of the lower screen resolution. I added the minimize, restore down and close buttons to the forms of my program but in the restore down mode the form does not scale down to show all the controls on the form. How can I incorporate scalabilty into the forms so that all the controls will be visible in the restore down mode.
View 5 RepliesI'm having to write a reporting application that gets information from some Interbase servers and it also has to work on Vista as well as XP, I'm using to connect Borlands Data Provider.[code]My Issue is that debugging on my xp Machine the dataset gets filled, debugging on my vista box it fails ("Interbase provider initialization failed"), my initial thought was that this could be UAC related but I've compiled the application and 'ran as admin' and still same issue. View 1 Repliesi am using visual studio 2005 on win 7 with office 2007. i have developed win application. i am using microsoft activex spreadsheet component in my program. so it automatically creates reference to AxInterop.OWC11.dll When i run program in debug mode (open program and click RUN in toolbar it works) but if i run directly .exe (go to bin elease doubleclick .exe) it give error at loading point of that component. It says "Attempted to read or write protected memory. This is often an indication that other memory has been corrupted." An unhandled exception occurrs.

I work for a shop that maintains a fairly new app. The app still has its fair share of bugs, with numerous tickets coming in daily. The error information we're given with those tickets is not as useful as it might be because the application was compiled in Release mode, which I read is smaller and faster (makes sense).
Are there any ramifications to deploying a .NET application to production that was compiled in Debug mode? I would expect it would be a bit slower, but I've read the difference is nominal. This would assure us that when we get errors on tickets we have line number associated with those errors and this, of course, makes debugging much easier. major red flags that would prevent you from doing this? I'm tasked with researching the possibility.
This is applicable to C# and VB.Net. I am writing a console application, but one aspect of it I want to make representable in a GUI (that being downloads running, with progress bars). is it possible to write a console mode application that can also have a form in it that can be called from code inside the console component?
View 3 RepliesI have a .net application that uses customerrors web.config module to display meaningful messages for errors. It works without any issues for 500 errors/exceptions caused by non-ajax and ajax components (updatepanel). However, in a scenario where updatepanel's asynchronous request times out, there is no error raised at all. I was able to see the timeout in firebug and come up with a solution that would at least display the error message as an alert and then redirect the user to the 500 error page using javascript but it's not quite doing what the rest of the application does in case of an unhandled errors like these. I basically just want everything to go through "LogEvent" mechanism so based on the severity of the error, it does the necessary work.This 500 error page doesn't have anything in the Server.GetLastError() for these timeout scenarios. Is this an expected behaviour? Can it be changed so I do have access to these timeouts in Server.GetLastError() OR maybe just run this error through "LogEvent" mechanism? Is there a better/more graceful way to handle this issue?

So when i build or click debug on my program. No errors come up and its smooth. So i decide to publish my programme. However. I come up with a bunch of errors during the publishing.

I am trying to find the handle of the child window for the Yes button in the User Account Control window so i can click it. This window has a structure with a few child windows with the same name.

There are multiple CtrNotifySink with its own Button child window or other child windows. How do i search thru the different CtrNotifySink window to find the one that contain the Yes button so i can send a click to it? I do need to find it before i can send a click, right? because i try just sending it to the main window with sendmessage and nothing happen.I even try sending it directly to the handle found by spy++ of the yes button with bm click but nothing happen?
