Dec 17, 2009
i'm working on a internet cache cleaner.. i load the cache files in a listbox and send them to the recycle bin. in this process, the app stalls until completion and the stall depends on how many files are in the cache.how can i do this and keep my app active, not stall?

i wrote a piece of code to write some data to a card reader, and read back from that device, filling a form with the data (after reformat).When I step through the code while debugging (using F5, F8 for stepping forward) the form is filled correctly.However, when I run the code (Ctrl-F5), the program seems to hang for about 5 sec and then throws an exception: 'Length should be >0' When looking further during debug - it seems that the program calls 2x the Sub Frm_Read_Display(). When a button is clicked,my program gets the list of all Drives on a current computer.Then I use String.Concat to merge the drive letter and the rest of the path.So I get something like: "C:" + "somefoldersomefile.some_extension"That creates a full path to a file I am looking for.Then I check if that file exists.If it doesn't exist,I use Process.Start to run the setup file(to install the program I need).It works well and installs the program I need.I want my application,after the installation is finished,to check again if the program is installed and ofcourse confirm that it is.
Private Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click
Dim DriveList As String() = Directory.GetLogicalDrives()
Dim Drive, FullPath, Path1 As String
Dim EmptyDrives As Integer

I am currently using vb2008 express, I want to have a database inside the finished application. Not one that connects to an external database or any outside connections but one so all the data is readable, writable, deletable from within the application itself.

How can I stop my application quitting until a backgroundworker has finished? Its an updater, so basically I want the form to hide until the download is finished, and then exit.I've tried to make a setting to tell the app when it is still downloading, and on form closing check this variable, but it won't work. For some reason it still quits!The update window is in a separate form to the main form, so the user clicks 'Finish', the update form closes and the main form stays open.[code]

Just finished a database for stock management system in local terms and language. All according to their request and agreement. Now they need me to add undo/redo functionality to the application and I just dont know where to start. I am looking first for a general tip on where to begin:
I have one form, for e.g., that manages their stores. Then another for catagories...now they need the undo for all this things and am not sure if it is even possible cos datas are related.

I have recently finished a console application and deployed it to several computers on our network for testing. As it is just an EXE a copied to the hard drives of selected computers for now. When the app is launched it writes info to an sql DB so I always know which computers it is on.
During the past few weeks I have modified this app at least 6 times (improvements, adjustments, etc)
It is a paint to keep going back to the computers to update it with the new version, and getting mixed up which version i am on - LOL I am looking for advice on how I would go about doing this automatically, for example, it would be cool if I just had to put an updated file in a repositry and clients would use this to update.
In Visual Studio, when I view the properties of my application>assembly information - I can set a file version. Is it possible to extract this info and store it in a variable? I would like to dump the in my DB. Also I could then possibly compare the file version of the launched app against an updated file in a network share folder.

Which is the best way to store application and user settings of an application running with multiple instances?My problem is that using the vb's "Application Settings" one instance would overwrite the other one.I want to identify each instance with a number passed via command line argument. I could use this number to identify the appropriate settings of the running instance, but I see in a local INI o XML file a better way to handle that.

Let's say 10 desktop shortcuts, all with different names/icons, point to and can start the same exe application from the same directory. Is there any means for the application to know the distinct name of the shortcut that was doubled_clicked. Also is there any means for a running application to know if it was started by command line, by a double_click on the exe, by a double_click on a shortcut that points to it, or by another process' call?

Is it possible to have code running in the background and still be able to use other parts of the program (i.e. firing other events).For example I have a instant messaging chat in my program and when the user has a new message then the display flashes from green to red as seen below
[code]...
But I still want to be able to continue using the other functions in my program despite having this code running in the background (which highlights to the user that he has a new instant message by changing the display background colour)How can I overcome this?

I have been working on them and adding to them for several months. Out of nowhere, one of the subs in my project is not recognizing updated code. I had a for loop in there that was acting funny so I changed something and noticed no difference. I messed with it for a while and decided to just replace everything in that sub with a simple msgbox and it still tries to run the code that was previously there. I have built the solution, rebuilt it, cleaned it, closed and reopened it, removed the bin and obj folders and restarted my computer several times. This is not a server program or anything dealing with IIS or anything like that.

I have an application that checks the available disk space on the host machine and, if the free space is less than some constant, calls a batch which e-mails people who should be notified about such things using sendemail.exe.The VB code works properly, calling the .bat exactly as it's supposed to, and the .bat (when run independantly) works properly, sending of a lovely e-mail.But, when I put them together, the batch file reports that "'sendemail' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.".I'm well aware of how the PATH variable works and have been sure that the path to the .bat is within PATH (hence why it works when I just run it from the command prompt). I can only assume that, somehow, PATH does not apply to processes run from VB.NET for some reason.

I am trying to fire off an FTP of files. I have broken down the code to the barest minimum. I have used the Shell Command with success before but the solution is now evading me.
Sub Main()
Dim strGetFileCommand As String
strGetFileCommand = ("c:\Windows\System32\FTP.exe -i -n -s:getcash.scr 10.113.1.7>113Log.txt")
Shell ("cmd /c" & strGetFileCommand)
End Sub
I can run the command from the c:> prompt at the command line so I know that it is correctly formed.

I am an end user of a VB based program and our windows 95 based machines are dying of old age. Before getting my boss to agree to my trying out a newer machine I would like to know if there is any chance of getting this program to run.
I know that I need to be able to drive 3 serial (485 / 422/ 232) ports one of which is on an ISA bus and the other 2 are located internally on the motherboard. Another factor in trying to do this is the drivers are missing for the 485 card and I hoped
to be able to locate newer drivers easier.I think the VB code was created under VB3, but we do not have the expertise / tools to be able to disassemble the .exe file.

I have a Window Forms application (using clickonce installation, running on a terminal server) that occasionaly ends up with a thread that appears to be running in a tight loop. The user doesn't know this happens as the app continues to run as expected. Also I have determined that I can kill the problem thread without any apparent affect on the app.
I can use Process Explorer to find the instance of an app with the problem and can isolate the thread with the problem but haven't found any way to look into the thread to find anything that would help me determine what is causing the problem. Does anyone know of a way to some additional information about a thread, like maybe strings, that would help me zero in on the issue?
