On my last machine I had created a way to see a GUID variable while debugging by hovering over it. I don't remember what it was (a visualizer?). I have a new 64 bit machine with vs2008 - is there anyway to mouseover a guid value and have it appear? What makes guid's so special that their value doesn't show like most variables?
View 3 RepliesI just moved from VS2005 to 2008. All seemed fine until I started playing with locally cached data sources. After that I started getting this problem and now I get it even when starting a new project. I start a new project and debug, Form1 shows and all is well. If I add a combobox to the form and debug the form immediately closes. It doesn't seem to do it for other controls.
View 8 RepliesI installed VS2008 ona newVista Ultimate 64 Bit machine. Works great. But if I try to change some VB2008 code while debugging, the system says, "Changes to 64 Bit applications are not allowed". Why is this? And will programming on a 64Bit machine always be hampered like this

View 1 RepliesWhen I end my app by pressing the stop button in visual studio, is there a way for that event to trigger some exit code? I'd rather do that than include a visually distracting quit button.
Better still would be to program some kind of key sequence, eg control + q to trigger some quit code so my app can exit cleanly. Is this possible? I wouldn't know how to program a key shortcut but it might be handy.
Prior to VS 2010 I was able to debug VB6 client code from the .Net IDE by setting "Start External Program" to vb6.exe (full path), or attaching to the running vb6 executable via "Tools->Attach to Process" and have execution stop at the required breakpoints in my .Net code.
Now with VS 2010 I seem to be only able to accomplish the same by setting the target framework to 4.
Is this a bug in VS 2010, or is there a switch/option that controls this?

View 7 RepliesI am converting an old asp project to a new .NET project. Now, all vb code are inside aspx files, and we are on the process of moving all vb script from aspx files to .vb files. My problem is, I can't debug the vb script inside most of the aspx files. All my friends don't have this problem. I think the problem is with vb text editor.I am using Visual Studio 2008. Is there anyway, I can make visual studio understand that aspx files have vb script inside them.

My problem is that when I debug the VB6 program, the first time InitSomething gets called, the event will not be handled (the VB6 event handler is never entered). Subsequent calls to InitSomething does work.
Everything works as I would have expected when I run the program outside the debugger. At this point, I'm not even sure if this is something I should be worried about.It may or may not be relevant but the VB.NET was converted from a VB6 using the Visual Studio code conversion tool (and subsequently manually cleaned up).

The above query works and returns values on first names that begin with whatever item I type in a text box.
How can I modify that code to search for items containing specified characters instead of just searching for items that begin with the specified characters. I would still need to use a wildcard because it is a search field. see below for an example
For example can I query the FirstName column to display people who's name contain the letters "an" in that order a before n but anywhere within the word e.g.

There has to be a setting for this somewhere, but for the life of me I can't find it. When I "Start Debugging (F5)", if there is an issue with my code, I get a "Build Failed" notification, in the lower left of my screen. I would like to be directed to the location of the failure. So far I have been lucky and have been able to find the offending code but this is getting scary .

In re-engineering a windows forms application, I find that a lot of code-behind in the various form classes is duplicative and I'm trying to centralize as many procedures as possible into a base class which can be inherited and used by the subclassed forms.
This process seems to be going well and is making the code in my subclasses much simpler and hopefully easier to maintain, but I'm not sure where to draw the line between leaving code in the subclasses and engineering for generic resusability and moving it to the base class.
Specifically, in some subclasses I have code which manipulates variables and objects specific to the subclass, and although I could move the code-behind into the base class, the base class code references specific objects which are needed to compile. For example, each subclass manipulates a databound datagridview and form detail controls which allows the user to select between multi-record and detailed single-record views of a datatable.
In Visual Basic 2008 do I need to declare dummy data objects in the base class so that the base class will compile? Or is there a way to indicate that the data objects will be provided by the subclass?

When I run or debug the code, it asks for the First Number and then just completes the running of the program without asking for the second number and uses some random number. The console.readline() doesn't work either, the console window just disappears.
I've found several articles/examples of connecting to SAP using VS03 however not with using only VS08. I understand they are working on a new connector (3.0) but need to connect now.
View 1 RepliesI have a program written in VB.Net (Visual Studio 2008) that uses a DLL written in Visual C++ by another developer. I'd like to be able to step in to the C++ code as my code makes calls to methods in the DLL. Since the DLL is it's own solution, I don't think it can be included in my solution/project. I tried putting the DLLs pdb file in the debug/bin directory with the rest of my build and pdb files. However, when I get to the point in stepping through my code, and it gets to the dll call, it just steps right over the dll code. Do I have to manually load symbols?

I had a support reply saying I needed to have VS2008 SP1 update installed. I clicked the About menu item for VS2008 and it shows SP1 under Microsoft .NET Framework Version 3.5 SP1. But on the left side for Visual Studio 2008 there is no SP1. Is the framework what they are referring to?

i tried to open vbp file in VS2008, it opened a VB Upgrade Wizard and created a new folder with in my VB6 Project Folder.
At this point I am completely stuck.
Is there anyway to build VB6 in VS2008 or Do we have any free tools to convert VB6 to VB.Net.
I live in the UK and I want to buy the standard edition cheaply. I've seen an OEM version on eBay which the seller claims to be the full version. But it's only one a single disk and it states "Disk 1" so presumably it isn't the complete application.
