Validating Form Input And Running Function Only If It Passes
Jan 19, 2010
In my .NET porject, I have to run a lot of validation on 4/5 fields. This validation checks if certain fields have errors, for example: the name field is not allowed to have numbers or symbols. If all these checks are passed, I need to execute a SQL query to pull some data out of the database. I could have it with a lot of nested IFs, and run the function at the end once it passes them all, but this will translate into about 12 nested IFs, and it seems a really bulky way to do it. I have also thought about setting a boolean value after every check, and if the value is 1 then don't run the function, else do. But of course this gets overwritten by other checks that pass.

can anyone look at this and see why it doesn't work? When I test and enter a numeric value in the text box it still gives the error I have placed in the code, same if I put in a letter etc.
Private Sub valueDouble(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles txtTestscore1.TextChanged, txtTestscore2.TextChanged, txtTestscore3.TextChanged

Entering a date with an Input Box and validating it to ensure it has been entered in form dd/mm/yy. I have a VB Macro in Excel and I want the user to enter a date in an Input Box in the format dd/mm/yy. The entry needs to be validated to ensure it is valid and if possible in dd/mm/yy format which if not would request another date is entered.

So I'm developing a Windows Forms Application in Visual Basic 2010. The user searches for data and fetches results, updates fields and some other CRUD operations. I want to provide a user input validation. Usual stuff i.e. some fields need to be always numbers>0, others need to be non-empty in order to avoid Null access on some objects and others just need to be some fixed strings.

Is it possible to run a function or to execute a button just after the form was loaded? I mean to execute it just as the form_load subroutine has ended, so the form is already being displayed.

Currently the process is in VBS, however this means there is no real interface.I attempted to get this into HTA, but this doesn't work to well due to known issues - the interface doesn't update with information until the end of the code (functions) are executed.So I thought I would create a VB program to do the work.Ideally, I would have a form load, and once loaded the functions (which map drives accordingly) will display the results on the screen.My code should be pretty sound - it is working - but it seems to be invoking BEFORE the form is displayed.I have tried various subroutines, such as Form1_Load, Form1_Activate, Form1_Shown, but all of these execute the code before the form has loaded and is displayed on the screen.As a test, I have
Private Sub Form1_Shown(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles MyBase.Load
lbl_Head01.Text = "HELLO WORLD"

I have a form set up where I want to run the function PopulateGrid on it's Form_Load event. I have initialized the DB connection as follows:
Private Sub Main_Load(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles MyBase.Load
LoadConfigFile()
cn = New OleDbConnection("Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0; Data Source=" & config("DatabasePath") & ";")
cn.Open()
End Sub
Now, I want to run the PopulateGrid function directly after I connect to the database as shown above. I'm confused as to how I'd use a database query in a module when the database is initialized in my main form. Would simple setting the variable cn to public work?

I designed a DataGridView under the name "dgvTarifa" and took a chance on trying Row Validating (tried Validated, CellEnter, CellLeave, RowEnter, RowLeave all count same) event. The purpose of the code is to load the selected values of the respective columns into three textboxes in order to rephrase/revalue those and update them by pressing a button. All works fine every single line of code there's nothing wrong except one logical thing.
When the form loads the RowValidating automatically fires because I have a function that Selects the table from the Database and it fills the DataSet by then attaching it to the datasourse of the "dgvTarifa" table. After setting the datasource of the datagridview, it automatically jumps to the RowValidating event which I DONT WANT TO! It first has to finish the whole function and later when the user enters with mouse or enters/leaves a row this has to be fired. (eventually already have the CellClick event with the same code below so only RowValidating has to work properly...)
Here's the code I use at row validating
Code:
Private Sub dgvTarifa_RowValidating(sender As System.Object, e As System.Windows.Forms.DataGridViewCellCancelEventArgs) Handles dgvTarifa.RowValidating
[Code].....

I am using validating procedures to validate user input from 4 text boxes. I am experiencing an issue using the 'x' button to close my form if invalid or no data is present in the textbox with focus when I click the 'x' button. Validating triggers and the message box appears. You can change the data to something valid and close fine but this is aggrevating. I changed the forms causevalidation attribute to false and created a sub to handle formclosing. In that sub I specified that causevalidation for all textboxes be disabled and also set e cancel to false. After that I tested with bad data and the message box showed again, but when I closed it the form closed also.

We have a window that has a text box on it that the user must enter in valid data before going on. So we have put in a message box letting the user know that they have to enter in the correct data before going on in the Leave event. That works just fine, but when the user press ALT+F4, or presses the X in the upper right corner of the window it still goes through the event. We would not like for that to happen. When we were using VB6 the same code was in the lost focus, and when the user pressed ALT+F4, and the X the LostFocus event did not fire, or acted like it did not fire. We have also tried moving the code to the Validating event, but it behaives similar to the Leave event? how to close a window, and either have the Leave, LostFocus, and Validating events not fire when the user Presses ALT+F4, or the X

Is there a way to prevent the form closing event from executing if validation fails on a control? If validation on a control fails this stops the form from closing, but the closing event still executes. Scenario is user has focus in a text box, tries to close the form. Validation fails, but closing event is fired. I'm not sure how I can abort that event.

For example, is this an acceptable way of checking that fields are not empty before submitting data to a datatable/database? Right now, Im simply checking with an If statement, and I'm starting to think that this is not the correct way to do it.
I'm also trying to learn more about unit testing, so if you have any tips or tricks, please feel free to share.

Works beautifully on my machine, but on three others i have tested it on, it opens PDF and TXT files no problem, but as soon as I attempt to open a Word file or an Excel file I get "There is not enough memory or disk space to open Word" and similar in Excel if the application is not already open. If the Office app is open, the code works perfectly. Has anyone come across this before?

Trying to write a very simple game moving PictureBox2 around with keys and when it passes over another object such as PictureBox1 the score is incremented and then PictureBox1 is disabled/removed. Problem is that it disappears but every time you pass over that area it still increments the score further as if the object was there still.
Here is current code, but have also tried hide, dispose and Controls.remove with no luck.
If PictureBox2.Bounds.IntersectsWith(PictureBox1.Bounds) Then
score = score + 1
Label1.Text = score
PictureBox1.Enabled = False
PictureBox1.Visible = False
