Apr 11, 2012I've made an application which goes through a long procedure when a button is clicked. I don't want the user to think the program has frozen, so I'd like to add a marquee progress bar just to show that it's still running. However, if I simply add the progress bar and make it visible when the button is clicked, the bar will appear but freeze and wait for the procedure to finish before it starts scrolling.
I know this is due to both the procedure and the progress bar running on the same thread, but the tutorials I've seen on getting a process to run on another thread seem confusing. What is the simple way to make a progress bar run on a separate thread?

I've linked a variable implying the progress of the for loop with the progress bar, but it seems that when I run the program, the progress bar does not update itself. The bar itself has only value 0-100 as input (as stated in the document) and I've tested it without using the for loop, and it works.

VS 2010 Backgroundworker Thread Running Faster Than The UI Can Update Progress?
Nov 15, 2011I have a VB.NET 2010 app that uses a backgroundworker to process MS Word docs. All of the code does what it is supposed to do, except when my code calls ReportProgress(). The UI cannot process the ProgressChanged event fast enough before the values in the class that are passed are changed. I know this because I inserted a System.Threading.Thread.Sleep(100) line after each ReportProgress() call which allows time for the UI to make the updates properly. I guess I am looking for a better solution thanThread.Sleep(100) since this adds to the amount of time it takes to process all of the files. Here are some snippets of code that I am using:

Mar 31, 2011when trying to run a function in a separate thread, my reason for trying this is because since the application is only run on one thread, the GUI hangs when the function is called.[code]In this code, the Print screen Button is pressed and the function HookCallBack is called.The problem is that the function has variables that need to be passed and returned, and while searching, i found a website that had an answer for this, and it required the function to be put in a class, and then it could be run on a separate thread while still passing all the variables needed.url...But the code cannot be placed in a class without giving errors and it seems to me like i did something wrong. The code is meant to be used in a form and not a class.My question is, how would i go about running the HookCallBack Function in a Separate thread?

I'm noticed the value that i paste is not same from what i copy in the excel file.(the application is running behind and using copy paste function at the same time.) Jan 19, 2010In my .NET porject, I have to run a lot of validation on 4/5 fields. This validation checks if certain fields have errors, for example: the name field is not allowed to have numbers or symbols. If all these checks are passed, I need to execute a SQL query to pull some data out of the database. I could have it with a lot of nested IFs, and run the function at the end once it passes them all, but this will translate into about 12 nested IFs, and it seems a really bulky way to do it. I have also thought about setting a boolean value after every check, and if the value is 1 then don't run the function, else do. But of course this gets overwritten by other checks that pass.

The mechanism works fine, but I want to add a progress bar to follow the progress of the files in the queue: processing 1 of 10......2 of 10......3 of 10 etc.For testing, I created a batch file to simulate the creation of files, so the filesystemwatcher can to his work and place the files in the queue. Progress Bar To Show The Progress Of The Current Task?
Jun 11, 2010In the app I'm currently making, I have two progress bars. One for current task being committed and the other is for overall progress.During runtime, I calculate how many tasks are being run and set that as the maximum. As each task completes, the progress bar is incremented by one.
I want the current task progress bar to show the progress of the current task. Some tasks can take a few minutes to complete so that progress bar works great. But, if the task is super quick, like editing registry keys, I see no progress at all.When I edit the registry, it basically goes like this:

It completes so quickly that I never see the bar even move.I also have each task report its name into a label and it skips ahead so quickly that I only see the first task name and the last.Is there any way to make this do a better job at reporting the progress?

Jul 22, 2011I came across a problem in my program it takes too long to calculate the values needed (about 10 sec) .But thats not the problem you don't know when the program is working or not, as it just locks up until its finshed and I view that as a problem.
I need to be able to show the progress of this .I looked at using background Workers but I get exception "Object reference not set to an instance" I believe this is because the background worker cannot write values or something ,As it works will a normal handler.

I tried using an input box which captured the user input and pass that variable to the query, but that failed. Then I read about writing a function and using that, however, I keep getting an error which says Function not defined, but when stepping through the code, it seems to work.
