.net - Visual Studio "Start Debugging" Vs. "Attach To Process"?

May 12, 2009

I have a client/server application using the .Net 2.0 Framework. I'm using Visual Studio 2008 to build and manage code. When I run either a Debug or Release version of the application simply by starting the .exe, I get an insert statement on the database that tries to insert a "0" for the foreign key of a table, triggering an error because the primary key of the other table is not 0.When I run the application by hitting the play buttton ("Start Debugging"), the insert statement uses the correct foreign key.In the first case, this happens even when I "Attach to Process" to the Debug version after it's started. My question: what's the difference between attaching to the debug version of the application after it has started and starting the application from the debugger?

Debugging Web Services In Visual Studio?

Sep 27, 2009

I am trying to use sample FedEx Web Service code written in VB.NET to retrieve shipping rates.

The call returned rate information, but it returned rates that are way too high and do not match those shown on their web site for the same shipping parameters.

Their support team is willing to investigate the discrepancy if I can provide them the XML data, SOAP transaction I presume, but I do not know how to get at this.

Visual Studio To Hang While Debugging?

May 23, 2009

I have a vb.net project which sometimes, when running in the IDE, suddenly hangs. Normally this wouldn't be a problem. Just hit 'pause', look at the currently running threads, and find the deadlock (or whatever else). But now I'm running into a situation where not only does the program hang, but trying to pause it causes visual studio itself to hang. In order to get control back, I have to kill the program-being-debugged's process, at which point visual studio comes back to life and says it was unable to pause execution. This is frustrating, because killing the process means the program state is lost (of course), so I don't know where the hang is.

C# - Visual Studio: Edit XAML File While Debugging

Jul 26, 2010

I have a WPF application running in debug mode, and I would like to change the XAML while the application is still running. I'm not asking for Edit-and-Continue. I don't mind that I will have to restart the application for the changes to become effective. I just want to be able to make changes to the XAML file while the application is still running, rather than having to (1) remember what I want to change in the UI, (2) close the application, (3) recall what I want to change and make the change.

Get An Intermittent Exception In VB(debugging In Visual Studio Express 2010)?

Apr 12, 2012

I'm testing my Visual Basic .net application by running it in Visual Studio express.Sometimes it runs OK, but other times I get an exception (details below, if useful). I'm not sure why I get the exception as the particular part of the application that I am testing re-uses code that works OK for other features.

What should I check, what would give me a hint as to the root cause. Things I tried so far are: Rewriting some of the code to be more robust. The outcome of this was that this approach was getting out of control - I was correcting everything. I made changes such asing alternative libraries (e.g. replacing CInt with convertTo etc). Some lazy declarations, but it occurred to me that there was no problem with these with the code before my changes. And every change I seemed to solve uncovered yet another problem, another different exception So I thought something must be fundamentally wrong with my installation, and a search found discussion group posts from people experiencing something similar. The suggested remedy would be to re-install the .net framework. So I did that and the problems still occured.

Any thoughts on approach to get to the root of the problem? I'm not asking for a solution but some fresh ideas would be very welcome.

C# - Creating A Custom Start Menu Shortcut Link For A Visual Studio Setup Project

Is it possible to create a custom start menu shortcut link?

The only possibilities I see in the setup project are shortcuts to folders or primary output.

Update:

What I ended up doing is creating a custom action on commit that dynamically creates the link using Windows Scripting Host. Then on uninstall, removing the link.

Difference Between Build ,rebuild ,start , Start Without Debugging?

Aug 18, 2007

I am confused with the terms Build ,rebuild ,start , start without debugging in VS.NET.After writing the code what actually we want to do .We have to run directly by pressing F5 key or we have to build the solution .Usually i tried to run the application after coding and if shows any any errors i will fix that and run again .I never used build or rebuild thing .What exactly meant by building the solution .What is meant by rebuild and start without debugging.

Developing MS Visual Studio Like Application Using MS Visual Studio 2005

Nov 27, 2009

I have to develop an application using MS Visual Studio 2005 or above with the following objective:

* The application should allow users to create as many new forms as they want and each form should behave like a MS Visual Studio WinForm. By saying that it should be a container for drag and drop of controls from the toolbox that I will develop....

* Once the user design's each screen to his taste by placing various controls on the form, he should be able to save the form as a screen. Of course I have to provide functionality for each of the controls such as if he drags a button on to the form, he should be able to specify what action it has to perfom when clicked when the application is put into run mode. Quite similar to regular windows form button.

* My application should have two modes: a DESIGN MODE, where user can drag, drop controls and specify what they should do when put into RUN MODE. This is quite similar to MS Visual Studio designer.

* Last but not least is to be able to access the application via the browser with the same look and feel his desktop version.
