View 5 RepliesI'm using visual studio express 2008, I wrote my code for a project and then when I tried to debug it I got a few errors but one main one that says this. Visual Studio cannot start debugging because the debug target "".exe is missing Please build the project and retry, or set the output path and assembly names appropriately to point at the correct location of the target assembly. Since this is my first time debugging a program with this particular instance of the program, I am in shock. Does anyone know how to fix this issue?

View 2 RepliesI've been assigned a web app written in VB using VStudio.net 2003. I am trying to configure the source on my localhost (VStudio 2008) so I can explore and learn about the current app (before I begin any real changes) and I cannot get debugging working for the web service project(s).
Symptom 1: "Unable to automatically step into the server. The remote procedure could not be debugged. This usually indicates that debugging has not been enabled on the server. See help for more information". This happens when I try to F11 (stepInto) the proxy class which invokes my actual web method.
Symptom 2: Pre-setting a breakpoint in my .asmx file code on the statement that will be invoked does not work (i.e. the debugger simply doesn't stop). Having described the situation, here's how my VStudio Solution is configured: Service1 - project created from the VB - WEB - ASP.NET Web Service Application template; this Service1 project contains my main .asmx source code I want to debug. Web.config for this project contains compilation defaultLanguage="vb" debug="true"

This started happening randomly yesterday. When I press F5 to test my project, an old build of the program (circa yesterday afternoon) launches. No changes (and I've tried in a few different files) are reflected in the project. However, and this is truly perplexing, if I go to Build --> Build from the Menu bar, the output .exe in the /bin/release/ directory DOES include all the recent changes.

I have a client/server application using the .Net 2.0 Framework. I'm using Visual Studio 2008 to build and manage code. When I run either a Debug or Release version of the application simply by starting the .exe, I get an insert statement on the database that tries to insert a "0" for the foreign key of a table, triggering an error because the primary key of the other table is not 0.When I run the application by hitting the play buttton ("Start Debugging"), the insert statement uses the correct foreign key.In the first case, this happens even when I "Attach to Process" to the Debug version after it's started. My question: what's the difference between attaching to the debug version of the application after it has started and starting the application from the debugger?
View 6 RepliesSuppose you have written a Sub Procedure in a Standard Module named Main and designated it as the project's Start Up object. You also have a form that is to be displayed once Main has executed. If, when you run the application, the form does not display on the screen, what is the most likely cause?
View 3 RepliesI am trying to use sample FedEx Web Service code written in VB.NET to retrieve shipping rates.
The call returned rate information, but it returned rates that are way too high and do not match those shown on their web site for the same shipping parameters.
Their support team is willing to investigate the discrepancy if I can provide them the XML data, SOAP transaction I presume, but I do not know how to get at this.
I have a vb.net project which sometimes, when running in the IDE, suddenly hangs. Normally this wouldn't be a problem. Just hit 'pause', look at the currently running threads, and find the deadlock (or whatever else). But now I'm running into a situation where not only does the program hang, but trying to pause it causes visual studio itself to hang. In order to get control back, I have to kill the program-being-debugged's process, at which point visual studio comes back to life and says it was unable to pause execution. This is frustrating, because killing the process means the program state is lost (of course), so I don't know where the hang is.
View 4 RepliesI created a VB Console app and it defaulted to .NET 4 but I need it to be .NET 3.5. I've been looking but all the references I find say to change it on the 'Compile' tab in properties but I don't have a compile tab or anything else that lets me change the target framework.
Note: I'm using VS2010 Ultimate
I have a WPF application running in debug mode, and I would like to change the XAML while the application is still running. I'm not asking for Edit-and-Continue. I don't mind that I will have to restart the application for the changes to become effective. I just want to be able to make changes to the XAML file while the application is still running, rather than having to (1) remember what I want to change in the UI, (2) close the application, (3) recall what I want to change and make the change.

What would be the best way to debug the following code. I know that it maybe wrong, but I am trying to learn this.

I have an desktop application that references several dlls. All are targeted for .Net 3.5, x86. The applicaiton has been deployed for several years and was upgraded from visual studion 2008 to 2010 last year. I have made several changes to the app since then (as recently as last Thursday) with out any issues. Now, everything builds, but when I run the application, I get a type initialiazer error when one of the projects is loaded by the main application.
The error messsage is {"Could not load file or assembly 'System.Drawing, Version=4.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified.":"System.Drawing, Version=4.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a"}.
There were no changes to this project since the last successfuly deployment last week, but today I am getting this error.
I've recently started using C# after years of using VB.NETWhen using Visual Studio, using VB.NET, on the code behind files (.aspx.vb) i could select from a list of controls in my markup file (.aspx) and then select an event to automatically put into my code behind.

View 5 RepliesMy visual studio addin project will not longer build and run in the debugger. I get the following error message when I try to run it:A project with an Output Type of CLass Library cannot be stared directly. It was working about 5 months ago just fine but I opened it and and ran it for the first time since then and get this message. It used to startup another instance of Visual Studio with the addin installed via a proxy addin file. How do I configure the project or solution to make it behave this way again? Do I need to manually tweak the project of solution file?
View 1 RepliesIt happens quite frequently, more times per day, that with Visual Studio 2010, during the debugging, when I used Immediate commands like:I receive the following error:

I'm testing my Visual Basic .net application by running it in Visual Studio express.Sometimes it runs OK, but other times I get an exception (details below, if useful). I'm not sure why I get the exception as the particular part of the application that I am testing re-uses code that works OK for other features.
What should I check, what would give me a hint as to the root cause. Things I tried so far are: Rewriting some of the code to be more robust. The outcome of this was that this approach was getting out of control - I was correcting everything. I made changes such asing alternative libraries (e.g. replacing CInt with convertTo etc). Some lazy declarations, but it occurred to me that there was no problem with these with the code before my changes. And every change I seemed to solve uncovered yet another problem, another different exception So I thought something must be fundamentally wrong with my installation, and a search found discussion group posts from people experiencing something similar. The suggested remedy would be to re-install the .net framework. So I did that and the problems still occured.
Any thoughts on approach to get to the root of the problem? I'm not asking for a solution but some fresh ideas would be very welcome.

In Visual Studio 2005, I can't seem to get the Intellisense menu to pop up at all when I click CTRL+Space. This seems to be limited to VB.NET files. I have tried creating new Visual C# and C# web projects, and it works fine there. There also doesn't seem to be a problem in things like CSS files in VB.NET projects. But when I create a new VB.NET web site, CTRL+Space does nothing. I have tried resetting all the Import and Export setting. That didn't work either.

I am using Visual Studio Ultimate. I have made a fairly long program which worked fine. One day I find that the debug button was disabled and both the build and rebuild buttons do not work. I have tried opening the same project files in Visual Basic Express 2010 but still, the sane problem.
View 4 RepliesI am working on a Visio Addin in VS2010 Professional and am looking for hot spots (specifically around a COM object) while debugging the application. I have found a number of profilers that can profile existing .NET applications, but none of which (that I have seen) support debugging. Further more, because this is a .NET add-in rather than a full standalone executable I'm not sure how they'd fair. [code] Has anyone found a profiler that can be used during a VS2010 debug session?
