VS 2010 Converting Hex Functions From VB6

Jan 9, 2011

I came about these two functions (ReadHEX and WriteHEX) that, obviously, read a hex offset or write a hex offset of a file. However, these functions were written in VB6. The main thing I'm not understanding is how to open a file (in a filestream I presume) and then to either read or write a certain offset from the file. I'd also need to convert the string I'm writing to hex before I actually right it, but I've got that under control. Here's the current functions as they were written:

Asp.net - Converting A Web Site Project To A Web Application Project .net App_code?

Jan 23, 2012

I am following the guidelines from [URL]..Mid way through the process they have you rename your App_Code to Old_App_Code folder and compile ... at which point i had DLL's in my BIN folder and i started to repair my aspx/ascx files.
e
Today i find the compiled bin files missing an now all my pages are sqwaking they cannot find the numerous Public Class - Public Shared Function's ... I have verified their build action to Compile but am unable to rebuild an have them regenerate on account of project errors.Advice on how to rebuild the bin or how to properly reference a Public Shared Function? My VB code includes an Imports statement taht used to find the class in app_code.

.net - Using Functions And Classes In Another Project?

Mar 12, 2012

I'm refactoring my VB project into 2 projects, one being a utility library that I want to share with future projects. My solution's layout is like this:[code].....

util is created as a class library, and the member files added into it. I've then added util into the main project's references. However, when I try to call functions in util.vb from my main project files, I get build errors like this:

error BC30451: Name 'LogException' is not declared.

error BC30002: Type 'VarFile' is not defined.

These are defined in util.vb, and it compiled fine when it was part of the main project. The declarations look like this: (I've trimmed out the details)[code].....

I can add util.vb "as link" into the main project and it will solve all the build errors, but that seems to defeat the purpose of refactoring out the class library - I would like to develop this library separately, and not always have to keep track of which file links I haven't added in my main project.

ApplicationEvents Not Catching Un-handled Exceptions

Feb 5, 2011

I have a VB.NET application (VS2010, .NET 4.0) that seems to throw an exception under some unknown conditions after a number of hours. In addition to the main thread, there are additional threads running. In reading this link: [URL] it seems like this would be a big help in trapping this exception. I have what are probably some very basic questions:

1. I assume ErrorHandlerForm() in the example refers to the main form of the application, setup.vb in my case. Therefore the last line in the example should be:

[Code]...

I would have expected to to replace ErrorHandlerForm.Form1_UIThreadException with find a setup event such as Setup_UIThreadException but there doesn't appear to be sucn an event.

ApplicationEvents.vb Not Catching Unhandled Exceptions?

May 5, 2011

While I understand ApplicationEvents.vb won't catch exceptions in another thread, is there any reason why it shouldn't catch exceptions in the UI thread? From time to time I get exceptions that simply crash the program, even though an exception handler is defined as follows:

Private Sub MyApplication_UnhandledException(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As Microsoft.VisualBasic.ApplicationServices.UnhandledExceptionEventArgs) Handles Me.UnhandledException

Write Functions In Microsoft.NET (VB) To Avoid Memory Leaks?

May 8, 2012

What is the best way to write functions in Microsoft.NET (VB) to avoid memory leaks. I have always followed this style:

Public Sub TestMemoryLeak()
Dim testCon As SqlConnection
Try

[code].....

Here the connection reference is created before the TRY clause and is initialised after the TRY clause. I believe the connection is always closed and dereferenced even if an exception is thrown. Is this good practice? I see a lot of code that creates references and dereferences in the TRY clause, but this would mean that the memory is not correctly handled if an exception is thrown. Some developers say they don't like to clean up in the finally clause.

Java, C#, VB: Write Thread Safety Functions Without Relying On Native Implementations?

Apr 24, 2011

is it ever possible to write locking-features(for threading) with the language itself (this question is purely academic, I know no one will ever do it even if its possible (not me))?

A) In Java, is it possible to write thread safety functions with java alone, but without using any of the provided classes/language elements/syntax which offer this feature?

B) In C#, is it possible to write thread safety functions with C# alone, but without using any of the provided classes/language elements/syntax which offer this feature?

C) In Vb, is it possible to write thread safety functions with Vb alone, but without using any of the provided classes/language elements/syntax which offer this feature?

Converting A .NET Project To A C# Project?

I've searched StackOverflow and have found a few questions/answers, but most suggest .NET Reflector or online copy/paste single file tools. Reflector doesn't seem to fit the bill as it will convert an assembly, but we're looking for a whole-sale project converter which will maintain the project including file names, comments, etc.

We're fully willing to manually address items that cannot be automatically converted, but would like to start off with a fairly comprehensive converted project. One recommendation we found is Elegance Technologies'[URL}...
