Why Not Expose List (Of String) In The Parameters Of Web Service
Dec 9, 2009
The FxCop says in a rule that generic List should not be exposed to the outside world.But I do not understand why and what is the replacement for the generice List? url...

I built a WCF service that exposes itself for a web application, it accepts an object and prints the data on the clients machine. Works fine on my development machine, and the service is up and running on any machine i install it on. I can enter ip address in clients machine web browser and see it is running. Problem is when i send the object to the clients machine it returns an error, that sounds like it could be because of the clients windows firewall. Where would i start at to deal with this problem ?There was no endpoint listening at http://192.168.1.168:2202/PrintLabel that could accept the message. This is often caused by an incorrect address or SOAP action. See InnerException, if present, for more details.

I'm creating an executable that will run as a background service.I want to communicate with this executable with a browser - similar to how you talk to sophisticated copiers in a big office.and was told to build an HTTP interface in that app.All the examples of httprequest and httpresponse I can find are about talking to web sites - or public services.How would I go about having my app "fire an event" when an async POST is made from a browser page? How do I wait on a port in the app?

For example, assume that in my assembly, in Namespace A, Class B, there is an instance method with the following signature: void Test(string someString, int someOtherParm, string someOtherString ); This method is called multiple times, from multiple places in the assembly. I would like to be able build a list of all invocations of this method and the value of the someString/someOtherString (assuming they are hardcoded). In other words, I like to extract a list of calls like the example one below, if they happen in the assembly somewhere: Test("some text", 8, "some other text");

im not 100% sure this is the right place for this, but thought I'd give it a shot.I created a windows service, and it accepts startup parameters to set the connection string for my database connection. (-L for live, -D for dev, -S for stage etc.)[code]I installed the service using installutil (I already tried using sc.exe) and I can't specify startup parameters.So if I go into Services and go into my service properties and manually type -D into the Startup Parameters box and hit start, I get -D as my parameter, life is good. But the parameter won't save in the startup parameters box, it just reverts to a blank box whenever I close the properties page.[code]

I am having the same issues as per this question: WCF not deserializing JSON input..I am at a loss and desperate for a solution. I have scoured the net for answers, but I have found only this question that matches my exact problem. My datacontract parameter is also nothing when the service starts.I have tried the points of the answer in the question above, but they provide me with no clues (The web service executes OK -I am not getting any exceptions - and I can't see what the deserializer is doing - or not doing as the case may be).I am using POST, due to the size of the nested JSON.If more detailed information is needed, I will provide it on request.[code]

Can I pass parameters back and forth between a Windows Service and .NET program? For ex: I want to pass a compressed/encrypted byte paramater to the Windows Service, who then decompress/decrypt it and return back the decompressed/decrypted bytes.

I want the Function to accept List(Of String), Array & String and similarly return List(Of String), Array & String respectively. The Function simply adds a string (month) to the input collection. I just want to use it for string, array and list with needing to think of conversions.

Is there any way to pass multiple values (a list of values) to a query via ODBC Parameters in VB.Net?
For instance, is there a way to create a query along the lines of:
-- vb.net has something like Dim itemNumbers As New List(Of Integer)(SomeCount)
SELECT Cost, Description
FROM MyItemList
WHERE ItemNum IN (<my list of item numbers>)

GOAL: Bind nested ListViews to LINQ generated iQueryable of anonymous type. I want to use LINQ because you can use GroupBy and bind the nested ListView to the 'it' keyword.
SETUP: I have groups of sets of conditions. Each set of conditions is stored in the BillingCodes table. Each group of BillingCodes is stored in the BillingGroups table.
I have a custom object that stores the ID, Name, and NumCodes for each BillingGroup that the user has chosen.I have a collection of these objects called GroupsList that has a list of the groups that the user has chosen.
Problem 1: I can iterate through GroupsList and grab all the IDs. How do I translate the SQL 'WHERE ID IN(a string of comma delineated IDs)' for LINQ to SQL? Is that the best way to do that?
Problem 2: Once I have the list of BillingGroups I need to iterate through each group. For each group, I need to iterate through the BillingCodes. For each BillingCode I need to generate a WHERE clause that has all of the conditions in the BillingCode. I propose something like so:
for each BillingGroup in BillingGroups
for each BillingCode in BillingGroup.BillingCodes
where1 = "..."
next
next
Problem 3: Here's the part where I don't have a clue. I need to dynamically create a query in LINQ to SQL. Keep in mind that I don't know how many groups there'll be or how many codes are in each group.
There are 2 tables:
**transactions**
transaction_id
patient_id

I have this bit of code that is being converted from vb6 to vb.net. I need to know what LenB is doing in this bit of code.
Dim singleValue As Single 'var for conversion use(4byte -> 1single)'
Dim bytes() As Byte
Dim valueB() As Byte 'this gets set elsewhere and is redim-d to its size'
[code]....
Am I right in thinking that bytes is always ReDim'ed to the same size? By the looks of it 4 elements.Why then use LenB to ReDim if you could just use a number? And why ReDim in the loop at all?

I've stumbled upon this code:
var knownSeparators = new[] { "\", "/", "|", "." };
return knownSeparators.FirstOrDefault(path.Contains);
where path is a string and the return value should be a string as well.
Allthough path.Contains' intellisense suggests a parameter, it works fine without one.
How does this work exactly? Is there any way to copy this behavior in vb.net?

In the Expression builder window in SQL Server Reporting Services 2008 R2 under Common Functions -> Text -> Item, there is an expression called Filter.This appears to correspond with the Strings.Filter method in the .NET framework. The description of Filter is as follows: Returns a zero-based array containing a subset of a String array based on specified filter criteria.The Example is as follows:
=Filter(Parameters!MultivalueParameter.Value, "3", True, CompareMethod.Binary)
The example and description imply that you can inspect a multi-value parameter to see if at least one of the selected values is equal to the Match parameter. I haven't been able to get this to return anything other than #Error which implies the multi-value parameter is not a one-dimensional array. Parameters!MultivalueParameter.Value.GetType().ToString() returns System. Object[].
how to get this to work? I'm using the following work around to check if values were selected in the multi-value parameter:
=IIF(InStr(" " + JOIN(Parameters!MultivalueParameter.Value, " ") + " ", " 3 ", CompareMethod.Text), false, true)
I would prefer to use the Filter function if it supports this kind of check.

i have a Windows service that is hosting a WCF service through net.tcp and this is working great. I have also created a WCF service application. I am trying to add the net.tcp service reference to the service application. Then I add it to the GAC that goes ok but if I try to RegAsm the WCF service application to allow it to be called from Server.CreateObject I get the error:
Warning: Type library exporter encountered a type that derives from a
generic class and is not marked as
[ClassInterface(ClassInterfaceType.None)]. Class interfaces cannot be
exposed for such types. Consider marking the type with
[ClassInterface(ClassInterfaceType.None)] and exposing an explicit
interface as the default interface to COM using the
ComDefaultInterface attribute.
It does not work. I have tried to call it through a class library but this does not work either as the end point is not set correctly.

My program uses parameters from the calling program in this format
parameter1/parameter2/parameter3
parameter2 is a datafile path which may sometimes have a space like :
C:Program Files est company
I did this as a work around
Sub Main(ByVal Args() As String)
dim cArgs as string=""
Dim J As Integer
For J = 0 To Args.Length - 1
cArgs = cArgs & " " & Args(J)
Next
And then used the string split function. Is there a proper way to work with spaces?

I'm trying to solve a problem regarding types of list. First of all I have a stored procedure in my DB which does a select of a single column and I try to proceed it in my app in VB. By making a method function I declared a DataTable that loads through the SqlCommand(with the CloseConnection behavior). After that I publicly declared a List(Of String) which needs to be populated with the rows/items from the stored procedure that is on the way. Below is my snippet of the code:
Dim dt As New DataTable()
Try
If conn.State = ConnectionState.Open Then
[Code]....
It's LPrefix = collection.Cast(Of String)() where I get an exception error telling me that I can't really convert it. The old fashion way is to iterate with for/for each loop but that's not what I want for best use of performance especially if the list will have thousands of rows from a single column. So basically, I want to insert those items from that DataTable to the List(Of String) without For/For Each loop.
Running on VisualStudio2010 Ultimate, .NET FrameWork 4.0.

The intention is to convert an IList of custom objects to a string equivalent comprising each element in the Ilist. Unfortunately I can't seem to find a way to get the underlying data of the custom object, and of course as in the above example, using object simply gives me a string of types definitions, rather than access to the underlying data.

I have two List(Of String) both containing several hundred thousand results.
Private Function AddUniqueFiles(lNewFiles as List(Of String)) As outList(Of String)
Dim aCounter As Integer = 0
Dim files As New inList(Of String)
[Code]....
However the time it takes to do this comparison can be very long indeed - is there a better way of doing this type of comparison... All I am trying to do is add values from List2 in to List1 which are not already present in List1 - So in effect adding new Unique values found in List 2 in to List 1. I am only looking for performance improvements - nothing else.

I should be able to get result back as long as there's a match in the parameters. If I use Function Contains (q.FirstName & " " & q.LastName).Contains(employeeName), I will not get any result back if employeeName is "John Clark" Function Contains looks only for next words from left to right. It doesn't match a single word at a time. So that's why I used this in the Linq to SQL:

I have a List(of String()). I have written a custom comparer (implements IComparer(of string)) to do an alphanumeric sort.Is there a way to sort the List using a given index to determine which position in the String() to sort by? In other words one time I might sort by Index = 0 and another time by Index = 3. The length of all String() in the list is the same.For reference this question is similar to Sort List<String[]> except I am using VB.net and that question is hardwired to Index=0.
EDIT from OP's comments:I started simple with the non custom comparer but I am getting an error: expression does not produce a value. Not sure what I am doing wrong.Here is the code:
Public Shared Function SortListOfStringArray(ByVal ListOfStringArray As List(Of String()), ByVal SortByIndex As Integer) As List(Of String())
Return ListOfStringArray.Sort(Function(x, y) x(SortByIndex).CompareTo(y(SortByIndex)))
End Function
