Win32 Development Using Visual Basic And Other Languages In VS2010?
Feb 12, 2011
Quick and straightforward (I hope) question, but it it possible to create old-style Win32 applications in Visual Basic- or indeed any other language aside from C++ - using Visual Studio 2010?Yes, I understand that VB 6 and VB.Net are significantly different, I can access pre-.Net COM objects and the like via VB.Net, but I was wondering if it's possible to create an "entirely" non-.Net program in VS 2010.
accept my apologies for any ignorance, as my knowledge of *any* Windows programming is limited.

I have created Stored Procedure in server explorer, and added this to my Form1
however, I find out I cannot simply use QueriesTable.Adapter.StoredProcedure1 in my VB code but I can add this Stored Procedure from TableAdapter and use TblContactTableAdapter.StoredProcedure1 to use this procedure, but I think it's kinda fool, why can't I use it directly from QueriesTableAdapter?
And I would like to know:
I think it's good to make stored procedure in database design so this procedure is saved in database server, rather than Client Side Application
Also, are queries created from TableAdapter saved in Client Side Application? which is not saved in database server side?

I'm an inquisitive .NET student without any commercial working knowledge and I have been puzzled by what exactlty are .NET languages meant for? Q1.If you look on job websites, .NET seems mainly used for web applications, not much for Windows applications? (My dream job is to develop standalone small Windows applications.)

i have two questions, and i don't know the best place to ask them. 1. Can anyone recommend a configuration for running Visual Studio 2008 and vb.net programming ? Is a quad core cpu better or a dual core enough ? Will things be much faster with an SSD hard drive or a 10k rpm regular drive will be enough 2. Does Visual Studio 2008 support multiple cores when compiling vb.net projects ? We have solutions with many projects and compilation is sometimes quite long.

visual basic.net is case insensitive so it allows the coder to write without caring or remembering the casing of variables. it also relieves from the 'undeclared variable' errors if you use the variable in another case than the one used in declaration. The fact that its line termination is a line feed makes it even more readable unlike C# or c++ that need good care in the casing and contineous war with following up with the {}, matching them and figuring out which is for which.my question is what are the advantages of c# over vb knowing that both get compiled to MSIL so there is almost no performance difference between the two languages?

In a while loop, I am writing a progressively increasing integer value (between 0 and 100) to the Value attribute of a ProgressBar control, when it disappears from the window in which it resides. I have verified at the time that it disappears that the Min is 0, Max is 100, and Value is a valid integer in range.

Does anybody know which version of Visual Studio 2010 contains the full set of Visual Basic SharePoint Templates? I am about to embark on a project to create Visual Web Parts to be used in a SharePoint report.
At the moment I am using Visual Studio 2008 and even though the WSPBuilder is installed none of the relevant SharePoint templates are present.Having searched SO and the web, most advise to install the templates via the Visual Studio command prompt: devenv /installvstemplates
Alas the Visual Studio command prompt is also missing from my VS2008 installation.So, the question remains: which version of VS2010 contains what I need for pain-free SharePoint development? There is a rather large price different between VS2010 Professional and VS2010 Premium, so can anyone tell me if the cheaper version (VS2010 Professional) contains all the Sharepoint templates?

How do I disable the background compiler for Visual Basic in Visual Studio 2008?
For my sins, I have to work on a large VB.NET project and it often locks up for 20 seconds at a time whilst doing the very helpful background compilation
I'd rather work blind between compiles and be able to do some work.

I am just wondering how I can add Direct X references to Visual Basic in Visual Studio 2010 Beta 2. I cant find them in the .NET reference list, or the reference list, or anywhere. I downloaded the Direct X SDK for August 2009, but I can not add the .dll files to the reference list. Is there anything I can do to add them? I need the references for programming reasons.

If he chooses the premium version, then I want it to say premium in his "receipt" later on and if he chooses standard, then standard in the receipt.

I was scripting a very basic process manager, with a ListView component, and it was working fine for many days, up until now.Here is the code for getting processes:
Dim Process As New Process()
Dim Count As Integer = 0
ListView1.Items.Clear()[code].....
The line of code where I put "*WIN32 EXCEPTION LINE* keeps running into an error(Win32 Exception was unhandled; Access is denied). Here is the full error description:
System.ComponentModel.Win32Exception was unhandled
ErrorCode=-2147467259
Message=Access is denied[code]....
As I said before, this had been working for several days, up until now.

when the user clicks on the add button another form launches, which enables the user to add student info such as name, address, course, start date and end date, this information is then written to class when the ok button on that form is clicked, and then displays the data on the initial form in data grid. the user can add multiple entries and they are all displayed on the intial form and a the data grid is populatedwhen any of the rows in the displayed grid is selected, and the update button is clicked then the same form launches as the previous one and but this time its in the update mode and pre populates the form with the inital values.

I am very new to Visual Studio Application Development. I'm mostly a DB guy. I used Visual Studio as a Report Designer, not much of an .Net guy though I can understand it. I am now asked to create a .net application and I'm trying to create a "Hello World" starter app. I opened my Visual Studio, click File-New Project and all I see is Business Intelligence Projects and Other Project Types. My step-by-step guide says choose Visual Basic, Windows Forms Application. But I can't see it as an option.

I'm looking for options to fill a Word Document from either Visual Basic, or Visual C#. I'm currently using merge fields, and the code below to fill specific fields in a Word Document, but now I've run into a situation where I need tabular data pushed to MS Word. Is there anyway to take data from a grid view (number of rows is dynamic), and import it into a Word Document Table using a merge field or something of that sort? I have to maintain the format of my template doc, and would like to be able to control the layout of the page

Is there a straightforward way to make a copy of a VB.NET solution and continue the project in another direction? I'd think this is a common problem but haven't been able to find an easy solution. Copying the files and renaming seems messy to me. Does the VS IDE provide anything like this? Update: It's a small project on my home computer so I'm currently not using source control. I wasn't expecting to need to fork or anything. Is there a way I can do this without setting up git or similar?

I understand visual programming languages to be those languages that allow the programmer to to manipulate graphical--rather than textual--objects onscreen to build functionality.
The closest thing I see in C#, VB, etc. is RAD controls, but that is just composing UI and the very simplest functionality -- it has nothing to do with the language itself, even.
Why, then is C# called "Visual C#", Basic .NET called "Visual Basic .NET," etc.?What is "visual," or what is the rationale or history behind the nomenclature?

I'm trying to just get a VB.net app to be able to execute a lua script in a external file, and be able to add some functions to lua too, To do this I have this code:
Imports LuaInterface
Public Class Form1
Public luascripting As New Lua()
Private Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click
luascripting.RegisterFunction("DisplayText", Me, Me.GetType().GetMethod("DisplayText"))
luascripting.DoFile("script.lua")
End Sub
End Class
But it errors on the register function, saying "Object reference not set to an instance of an object." Do you know of a example VB.net project that uses lua? Or know how to fix this?
