i have two questions, and i don't know the best place to ask them. 1. Can anyone recommend a configuration for running Visual Studio 2008 and vb.net programming ? Is a quad core cpu better or a dual core enough ? Will things be much faster with an SSD hard drive or a 10k rpm regular drive will be enough 2. Does Visual Studio 2008 support multiple cores when compiling vb.net projects ? We have solutions with many projects and compilation is sometimes quite long.

Would my messenger just send a message to all IPs on a certain port to say I'm online and then wait for a message back from the IPs that can return messages and then figure out who is online that way?

I want to design a application which can support two different types of databases same time e.g; when we install, it will ask which db it has to support and based on initial selection it should work with any db without changing anything in the application.In short it has to be developed keeping in mind that user may have either MS SQL or MySQL. My program that I'm trying (can't emphasis this word the importance of that word) to create a Client/Server chatroom using TCPClient in Visual Basic. So far I can get my client to speak to my server. However, i'm trying to get the returned data to display in a listbox which never happened, i then tried a label, which again never happened then a text box which I'm sure you can figure out how that went! I'm not great at networking programmers nor am I not bad I'm terrible but duty calls when it comes to projects.
The code I currently have was mostly taken from the net but when I have the program fully work and I understand how the software works I intend to heavily modify for it to suit the needs of what I need to achieve. where I can get my client to display the data from the server that I have already sent to the server (which displays successfully within the server).

We are creating a Who wants to be a millionaire style game in VB. Our server is pulling information such as questions and answers from a Access Database and sending them to the contestants (Clients). All transfer of information is directly from the server to each client. One of the "Life Lines" we want to use is "Ask a friend", where one client is able to Instant message another client for a short time to get help on the question.

Does anybody know which version of Visual Studio 2010 contains the full set of Visual Basic SharePoint Templates? I am about to embark on a project to create Visual Web Parts to be used in a SharePoint report.
At the moment I am using Visual Studio 2008 and even though the WSPBuilder is installed none of the relevant SharePoint templates are present.Having searched SO and the web, most advise to install the templates via the Visual Studio command prompt: devenv /installvstemplates
Alas the Visual Studio command prompt is also missing from my VS2008 installation.So, the question remains: which version of VS2010 contains what I need for pain-free SharePoint development? There is a rather large price different between VS2010 Professional and VS2010 Premium, so can anyone tell me if the cheaper version (VS2010 Professional) contains all the Sharepoint templates?
I am just wondering how I can add Direct X references to Visual Basic in Visual Studio 2010 Beta 2. I cant find them in the .NET reference list, or the reference list, or anywhere. I downloaded the Direct X SDK for August 2009, but I can not add the .dll files to the reference list. Is there anything I can do to add them? I need the references for programming reasons.

I'm working for a socket tcp/ip. I have a server form on Server PC and client forms on all clients. I want the clients auto find and connect to the server PC when I open connection on server form? (in common, I have to set the server IP and ports to each clients, if not they cannot connect).
