Winforms - Use Custom Roles For User Access?
Sep 2, 2009
I have a winforms (VB 2008) based app that I'm developing and I want to use custom roles for user access.Application Layout:I have a Main form that opens a login form when certain actions occur.The Login form intern uses an authentication class that I've created, to authenticate users and set access rights.On my Applications settings page, I have Authentication Mode set to Application-defined because I cannot use Windows Authentication in the environment where this will be deployed.
The application uses a MS SQL 2005 db and the 3 tables I'm using in the authentication process are the User_Account , User_Roles and User_Access tables. The combination of an account in the User_Account and the roles within the User_Roles table are the bases for the User_Access table. Using the User_Access table is how I assign access to the various functions within the application
Authentication Method:To authenticate a user, I'm using the "My.User.CurrentPrincipal" (Code below) method. The My.User object works great and allows the use of "My.User.Name" property throughout the app when referring to the currently authenticated user.
Access Method:In order to set the current users access levels I'm using a function within my Authentication class and passing in My.User.Name as a variable. The function uses a Dataset Table Adaptor and a Select Case statement inside a For loop to assign all the access levels for the user (Function code below).
My Problem:This method of assigning access rights to a user does work but it's not persistent throughout the application as the My.User object is.I would like to find a way to create custom roles through the My.User object using its .IsInRole property. I would like to have these roles dynamically created using my User_Roles table.This would allow the custom roles to be used throughout my application using the My.User.IsInRole ("MyRole")syntax ...similar to how I'm currently able to use My.User.Name.Unfortunately the only roles I can currently validate against are the built in Windows
type accounts (Adminisrator ...ect.).
'User Authentication example:
If Authenticate.CheckPassword(tbxUserName.Text, strPassword) Then
My.User.CurrentPrincipal = New GenericPrincipal(New GenericIdentity(tbxUserName.Text), Nothing)[code].....

I am creating a website using asp.net mvc model. When you create an mvc application asp.net automatically creates roles/profiles for user and admins (as far as i know) and corresponding tables in sql server database.I a need a new profile/role names "sponsor" that has all the benefits of users/admins (like authorization etc).

I am looking for ways to implement custom user-roles in windows application with vb.net. I got a database table called Roles with Administrator and User entries. User cannot see some of the form data. In ASP.NET MVC we can do like.
[Authorize(Roles = "Administrator")]
public function GetAccount() as Array
End Function

I'm developing a "small" warehouse-management WebApplication for few users(5-10 parralel) but with a complex authorization system(checking if pages,menus,TabPanels, UserControls and even single controls are visible or enabled) and permanent and frequent access. Because i've only limited experiences with the ASP.Net MembershipProvider, i'm unsure what's the best approach for following goal:
I want to hold all users, roles and frequently used masterdata in the Cache(in a Dataset). Hence every readonly access should be faster and causes less traffic than always using the database. On updates,deletes and inserts i would update the cached dataset and also the database.
Can i use or extend the SqlMembershipProvider to achieve this goal and if possible how?

Is there a method for checking which roles a user has in SQL using SMO? I can add a role via: user.AddToRole("Administrators") But cannot see an obvious method to progmatically list them.

I am trying to restrict access to an intranet site via Windows authentication. I would like to control access via active directory user groups, but my added AD groups don't appear to be recognised by .net. I started with the following test code in my app to determine if the group could be used...
Protected Sub Page_Load(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Me.Load
Me.Label1.Text = User.Identity.Name
[Code]...
The isuserinrole returns false and the group is not shown in getrolesforuser. However, getrolesforuser returns all of the built in windows groups as well as custom admin user groups created by our anti virus software (SOPHOS). This tells me that .net doesn't seem to have any issue with reading our active directory but I don't understand why my custom group is not being recognised.

I'm trying to match up a specific group name and see if it exists for the currently logged in user using Active Directory roles. If the Group Name exists for the Current User, I want that group name to be displayed in a drop down list. Example: If current user is in BIG Group, display BIG in drop down list.Problem: All I am getting is SIDs and I'm not able to get anything to match up to the group name and nothing will show up in the drop down list.I also get the following Error:Error: Object variable or WIth block variable not set.How do I fix this?? here is the code I am using:

I'm interested in building my own basic Application controller and ditching the Application Framework entirely.Never done this before (or even considered it) but now I'd like to be able to cut out anything that stands in the way of making my App compatible with both DotNET and Mono, for which Microsoft.VisualBasic.ApplicationServices is pretty famous.I start, or links to sample Main Modules for WinForms online? Seems like most of what I find is for Console apps.

I would like to open a new form from some other form, and pass some selected object from a control on that form to the new form. The sensible way to do this, I thought, was as a parameter to the forms constructor. Now I know that the visual studio GUI creates partial classes for my forms, that hold the properties that I can drag onto there in the designer. I assume it also holds a default constructor. Since it might do all sorts of stuff that is needed to initialise the form, I figured I should call it from my custom constructor ala
public sub new(byval my_parameter as Foo)
Me.new()
Me.my_parameter = my_parameter
[code].....
That clearly wasn't it, because it can't find a default constructor. The thing is, visual studio goes trough great lengths to prevent me from seeing the generated constructor, so I know how to access it. This leads me to believe that I am actually doing it wrong, and should have set out on some different path, as the path you are forced in to usually is the sensible thing to do, which I usualy find out way too late.

Our shop primarily use "ADO objects" (I'm referring to DataSet, DataTable, and DataRow) for marshaling around data and manipulating it on forms and in grids. We are experimenting with creating shop-flavored counterparts to the native ADO objects so that we can impose our in-house standards on top of them. Implementing this is straightforward with one exception: I want our objects to be bindable to controls.
I'm aware of IList, IBindingList, BindingSource, etc. and have looked at and experimented with these, but I am falling short when it comes to making a class with no hard property names bindable. The native ADO objects are not strongly typed by default. You have column values that you access via the Item property (e.g. row("Age") or row.Item("Age")). The binding examples I've found online deal with strong-typed objects (e.g. row.Age). Essentially, we want to create custom ADO objects (not inherited from the native ones) that still retain their ability to bind to controls. In a grid I would expect to see columns Name, Age and Occupation from a row where these properties are exposed via row("Name"), row("Age") and row("Occupation"). This must be doable as this is exactly what the native DataTable and DataRow provide.

Am in the process of architecting a new windows forms application, and I intend to use Visual Basic 2008 and SQL Server Express 2005. This is my first application in .Net and I really want to observe the best OOD & OOP principles to create an application that is easy to maintain and extend (add new functionality). My issue is in regard to databinding on the UI. From experience, what do you guys recommend to use for databinding? Should I return datasets/datatables from my Business Layer and bind these to UI controls or should I return Business Objects and bind these to UI controls? And what are the pros and cons of each approach?

I have a custom collection, lets says COL, that derives from ObjectModel.Collection. I have my own collection editor that works fine when a property, of type COL, is Read and Write enabled. However, if I change the property to ReadOnly, the open editor button stops showing in the property grid. As a test, I override my custom editor with the CollectionEditor, and that worked fine. So, my question is, what check is the property grid making, that CollectionEditor passes but my collection editor fails?

I have some custom user controls in my .net winforms program that do not display correctly when the user has selected larger text size. This setting:
My controls look like this:
Instead of like this:
The bill to area and ship to area are both custom controls. I don't know if this is contributing to the problem but I do have code in each to scale the phone/fax areas to stretch nicely, like this code from the bill to control,
Private Sub panFaxPhone_Resize(sender As Object, e As System.EventArgs) Handles panFaxPhone.Resize
panFax.Width = (panFaxPhone.Width / 2) - 1
panPhone.Width = (panFaxPhone.Width / 2) - 1
panFax.Left = panFaxPhone.Width - panFax.Width
End Sub
How can I get my controls to size correctly while still respecting the users choice for larger text (I don't want to just set the AutoScaleMode to None)? After playing with this for a long time it seems to be a problem with anchors in the child controls. See this below image, the inner black box is the control with its border turned on, the text boxes (like name) are anchored left and right and should stretch to fill the control, but don't.

I have a website with login and register forms using custom HDI Membership provider where Users can login or register new account.
Now I have a desktop software and trying to have two forms for login and register where my users can able to login or register for user convenience and not by going to the website and make them register online.So, I have these to know in order to go further.
1) Can I use HDI membership provider as I have used it in my web application?As previously I have done and I faced many problems and still didn't get clarified here
2) If No, how do I make use in order to make use the same HDI Membership.Finally I need to use the same database for my desktop software as well as my web application with all the possibilities (i.e. I need to validate each parameter of my membership class).I am able to register the user but it is not using the Membership and I'm unable to know why it is not picking up the membership provider from the app.config file.

Does anyone know of a good way to have a user enter an amount of time (hours and minutes) using winforms controls? At the moment I have two numeric up downs, one for time and one for minutes that I then parse to create a timespan. The only other idea I have is a text box that a user can enter a "00:00" time in, and validate the input. Both of these ways seem a bit bad (in UI terms) though.

A while back, I wrote my own settings provider because I was having problems persisting settings in a class library. (Note - I had no problems persisting settings from an application).Today, I just did a test of persisting class library settings and it worked, without my custom provider.The test is:
(1) Create a class library
(2) Add a setting - 'Name'
(3) Add a class with a public shared property 'Name' that reads and writes to the setting 'Name'.
(4) Create an application that references the class library, and use the shared property to read and write the 'Name' setting.
I'm sure that before the 'Name' setting would persist while the application was open but after I closed it and re-opened it, the setting would revert to the default.This is not happening now and I'd like to be sure that I was being an idiot before and not an idiot now.
ETA: I've noticed that the first time I create a test app, change the setting, close, and reopen, the setting is not persisted. Subsequently it is. May be I gave up after one try before. Any ideas why it's not persisted the first time?
ETA2: As an example, I have a class library called 'MyLibrary' and a test application called 'MyApp'. I do the steps 1-4 above, and below are the contents of the user.config file found at C:Documents and SettingsUser NameLocal SettingsApplication DataMyAppMyApp.vshost.exe_Url_vi5gjcooahbdm2ma3dcay0mkexu2suul1.0.0.0. I'm trying to write an application that will allow a non-administrator user to create virtual directories in IIS6. I've tried numerous different ways of impersonating a administrative account but nothing seems to work to create the virtual directory.
Here's some of what I've tried:
dim sDirPath as string = "IIS://remotehost/W3svc/1/root"
Dim de As DirectoryEntry = New DirectoryEntry()
de.Path = sDirPath
de.AuthenticationType = AuthenticationTypes.Secure
de.Username = tbxUsername.Text
[Code] .....
what is the correct way to impersonate another user in winforms application that will allow me to create the virtual directory without the user that's running the application being an administrator on the web server? I know this can be done, IIS manager allows you to use "connect as" checkbox to do it.

I'm writing a desktop application that uses the main access database that will be hosted on a central server, but there will be a laptop with the app on that has an offline mode so records can be created offsite. When the laptop returns I want it needs to be synced back to the main database.
Has anybody got any pointers on a way to do this, I've briefly read about JRO but is there an alternative / better method?
Originally, I was just going to write some custom code to do this, but thought I'd check to make sure there wasn't something already out there.

I have a question about the webbrowser control that I hope someone can answer. I am working on a document retrieval and storing class that uses HTML to display and save data. I want to use the webbrowser control in winforms using VB.Net. I only want to store the fields values in the html document, not the whole document. I am hoping to use labels in html and read them with the DOM of the web browser control but am not sure how to do this.
Has anyone done this before and could someone please provide some sample code on how to do this?
