Skipping Lines In Text File Source?
Jul 30, 2009I have a text file 'source'. I want to skip 4 lines then grab the 17th through 33rd characters and assign them to a variable. Then drop down to the 9th line and grab the 10th through the 19th character and assign them to a variable. Then skip to the 27th line and write each line to another file with these two variables appended to the end of each line. I can write the lines to another file easy enough but I'm not sure about skipping around from line to line or grabbing the variables.

Now I need to do is I need to read the file after the line DETECT, ON then if I find T250, T169, T176.....Txxx which ever line start with T. I must read and write that line back in between the line FMAT, 2 and DETECT,ON in my same text file.

Nov 18, 2010I would like to read an HTML file, search each line to see if it starts with </head>. Then add the centering code after it. That line at destination file should read:

After this I don't care to search for anything. Just read from source and write to destination. I know there are programs out there to find/replace text in series of files but I am not allowed to use external programs.

I put my code together and after running it look at the file and it's unchanged. After looking closer it appears the problem is the find & replace operation I am doing on the string. Here is my code:

Load Event Skipping Lines?
Nov 4, 2009The load event goes through two different List(of T) in its own For Each loop. When the form is run for the first time, the first list is populated, the second one is not so the first loop runs but the second one does not. Then an integer that would normally be modified by the second loop remains at 2 and is assigned to a private variable integer, _handsRemaining.
Here is what it DOES. It runs through the first For Each loop and populates the appropriate field. It ignores the second loop because there are no weapon Class instances in that list. Then it goes wrong. It IGNORES the remaining lines (including the third MessageBox.Show) and somehow assigns a value of 0 to the private variable, _handsRemaining.

Skipping Text File Read If Error?
Jun 18, 2012I'm not really sure how to word it, if it is possible, but part of my program reads from a text file. It then pulls out the necessary information needed from that file by finding key identifiers. Right now the code is written to find the first key identifier and then read each line after that, locating each subsequent identifier and pulling the data from it. In a few cases, the format examples I've worked with are a bit different which results in a runtime error. How can I tell the program to essentially skip that part of the text file if it's not reading it right and continue moving on? Here is somewhat of an example of the text file.

The only thing I can do for now is either use the substring function to remove the first character from all array values after 0 but I don't like that because it's messy and what if the split "works" as I want it to one one of the lines and knocks of the first character when I don't want it to.

Sep 15, 2009I have a text file containing lines of data (File 1). I need to delete all the lines in another text file (File 2), which are found in file 1.So I could read file 2 line by line. And then once the line has been read, read file 1 line by line to search for a match. But that's going to be painfully slow.Or I could read file 2 into memory. And then read file 1 line by line and REPLACE the lines in file 2 with nothing, therefore deleting them. File 2 could be 100 mb, so I'm not sure about reading it all into memory.

May 10, 2012Below is what I've been using. While it does work, my program locks up when trying to count a rather large file, say 10,000 or more lines. Smaller files run in no time. Is there a better or should I say faster way to count the lines in a text file?
