There is a sentence that is uniqe inside (but the same for all) at the line i want to start copying from.In other words i need to seach for a spesific word, copy everything from that line to the end of document, and print that to a new doc. Repeated for all files in the current folder.

View 1 RepliesI'm a complete novice with VB and any coding in general, but as life will have it, I have to create a program for my Final Year Project at university.In short, the idea is to open a file that has many lines of numerical data, then select the required lines, do some calculations on them and write it into a new file, but the new file must have its own format and the calculations must go into the correct lines.
Im struggling really with how to get it to read the file and then write the new one. Currently I have it so the user can open the file and it will display the data into a text box. I want to then be able to click another button that will convert that data into a new type, and in turn display that in another text box. Then have a save button to save the newly created data. This is what I have so far...(it's not much.I havent really got much of a clue what I am doing lol)

Here's what i've got so far, i've written all of the data that i'm going to put into my config file, however i'm having trouble reading the specific string values that I need from that ini file. The parts of the ini lines I want to get are the values in between the I've tried using streamreader a couple things but i'm having trouble figuring that out. I need to parse each line of the ini file to get that value in between the single quotations, so that I can set the value for my richtextbox background and text color as well as a few other things that i've set up in my notepad including tab spacing and so on. lots of these different values need to be converted from a string value to integers, and boolean values as well. (4 of them, the rest of them don't have to be changed because they are already string values when my application reads them to determine it's application load settings.
EDIT: I just noticed in the preview that this is from the version of the app where I had streamwriter write "______ value=" & Something to a file. lol some of the (')s are still in this version, so please excuse that little part. I had them in, but took them out so that I could trim data to get a value easier, but I want to use (')s hopefully when all is said and done.For example, just to restate what I want - in the ini file it will read [setting name] value='VALUE'I want to be able to "get" the string value of "VALUE" within the ini file between the 2 single quotations '

View 5 RepliesI have written a simple script to get a bunch of lines from a text file (they will be filenames eventually) which are split by new lines and puts each one into an array..
Dim ary() As String
Private Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click

The only thing I can do for now is either use the substring function to remove the first character from all array values after 0 but I don't like that because it's messy and what if the split "works" as I want it to one one of the lines and knocks of the first character when I don't want it to.
I have an issue where I need to load a fixed-length file. Process some of the fields, generate a few others, and finally output a new file. The difficult part is that the file is of part numbers and some of the products are superceded by other products (which can also be superceded). What I need to do is follow the superceded trail to get information I need to replace some of the fields in the row I am looking at. So how can I best handle about 200000 lines from a file and the need to move up and down within the given products? I thought about using a collection to hold the data or a dataset, but I just don't think this is the right way.[code]....

I am having problems writing correct data to a file. I create a string of characters (approx 5000 bytes long). The string is a mixture of text characters and numbers converted to bytes. I then:
a) write the string to a readable text file
b) display the string contents to the console
c) write the string to a file - BDF.bin (I tried both IO.BinaryWriter and IO.StreamWriter but get the same error)
The byte pattern for the text readable file and the data displayed on the console match and for the most part , data bytes in the StreamWriter file are correct (first 4096 bytes are OK) but there are some extra bytes and some wrong bytes.Here is a comparison of byte patterns (hex values character written to the file) starting at byte 4096
Console: 45 44 52 31 00 00 00 00 01 00 00 00 90 01 00 00
Binary File: 45 44 52 31 00 00 00 00 01 00 00 00 C2 90 01 00
The byte patterns match, however in the binary file, there is an extra byte (C2).To display the console data, I read one character at a time from the string and display it using hex(asc(mid(string,i,1)))I view the binary data in the BDF.bin file using a hex editor program. I even tried 2 other hex editors and all showed the same byte info.
