Sep 7, 2011I'm trying to "convert" an Access DB to a stand alone application. I have under estimated the differences between VBA and VB. Although I have many questions, I'll focus on this topic first.
The Access DB collects and maintains SNMP traps from a radio station. I import CSV files from a remote Unix server via FTP, parse the text line-by-line, and add to a table as a new record. So far, I can parse the text and add to a dataset but I want to write directly to the data source. I also need error handling that will trap errors for duplicate records. There is a Reconcile function that ensures that all lines in the CSV files are added to the table before the files are permanently deleted. Here's what I have so far:

Feb 13, 2012My first question has to do with the opening lines needed in a VB program in order to connect to Excel 2007 and read/write some data from/to it. I know the process only slightly and reading and writing to the cells is not my real concern for the moment. What I need to become familliar with are the lines like this:

This is just one of the examples I have read through and to be honest I only follow this slightly. The trouble was that with each new article I read, people did this differently, not the variables on the left mind you, just that some left out lines, which I can see could be done based on circumstances. Still others said the Imports line was not needed....etc...and other loaded up at least 3 or four more Imports lines insisting all were needed.
I'm looking for some straight-forward advice on what is the minimum needed to access an existing Excel spreadhseet and to just read some of it's cells to variables in the code and then writed some data back to certain cells within the spreadsheet and then save and close it.
Also, please note that I am using VB 2010 Express. Why, because I'm a broke developer who spent most of last year out of work. I have a new contract assignment which is so far going well but will go even better if I can master this technique with VB.NET, not VBA. And all the docs I've read said that even though VB 2010 Express is a watered down version of VS, I should be able to do medium level tasks such as this with it.

Read / Write Data From RS232 Port?
Aug 23, 2010I need to write and read data from a RS232 port. On the RS232 port there is a RFID Card reader-Writer connected. So I need to send hex codes to the device, and have to poll every 1sec if there is a card in the system. If there is a card I need to read the info that is on the card. My biggest problem is I think is that I am not sure how many characters there will be in return after the read command (maybe it is always the same length this I am not sure). What is the right way to read-write to the com port. So I always got the same result and not skipping a code.

Mar 22, 2010I'm having difficulty figuring out how to run different programs with my VB program. Using Excel and other MS office programs is easy enough since I just add in the relevant COMs, but I can't for the life of me find out how to run other programs. I promise I spent many hours searching before bothering you kind folks here! I'd think this is a common issue so maybe I haven't been searching for the right thing.how to write code that will control and read data from applications.I know you can do "Process.Start" to open any application, and it looks like there are ways to determine the controls available on an open application, but I can't figure out how to do it. Is this possible? Or do I have to import a .dll file for every program I want to control? Or are both possible?

Nov 17, 2010I am working on a program with multiple collections related to one another for a school project. Each collection needs to have its own defined properties and have the objects written (1 per line) to a text file.
I have all of that working.
When reading the comma-separated line from the file, I want to place one of the properties of the object in a listbox (so that all the objects' names will show up in the listbox). I think I have this part figured out...
My problem is that when you click on the name in the listbox, I would like multiple text boxes to be populated with the appropriate, corresponding properties of the particular object in the collection...is there a way for this to be done?

Jan 3, 2012I'm looking at an old web app I wrote and it is taking about an hour to read 4500 records from a DataTable so it can write them to a CSV file.
The DataTable contains... 376 columns
At least, I think that's what Excel's NL column converts to. I just looked up the column count now and had no idea there were so many. Our software vendor hasn't realized the value of dynamic sql statements for this process, so every software "upgrade" just keeps adding more columns rather than only selecting the ones needed. I cannot alter the SQL statement that generates the data
Depending on the data type, the data needs to be formatted in a specific format Data does contains special characters, such as commas The slow part is reading the data. Getting the data from the SQL server and writing it to a CSV is fast.

Apr 28, 2012I was unable to find anything in my searches for XML or INI on the forum so i apologize now if this has already been asked and answered before.
I have been searching Google for days now, trying to find information on Reading and Writing XML files. I wish to use them to replace INI files in my programs.
I have been using VB6 for years now, but was able to get a copy of VB.NET 2003 really cheap and so i am trying to learn how to do the things i did in VB6 in VB.NET 2003.
I was able to find code to write to an INI file, but was not able to successfully read from an INI file with any of the code i found.
I have been able to find code to write an XML file, but when i try to update it, it replaces the old file with a new one, and the old settings are missing, instead of the new settings added to it.
i can at least start migrating to VB.NET 2003, or if you read XML and update XML data, i can switch now. Here is the code i have for writing XML.[code...]

I must read the file scan for value T250,T169,T168,T170,T176............which ever value start with T after the line"DETECT,ON". then i must sort these values so that it will be in acending order. Then i must write back that values in same text file after the line FMAT,2.. Now i can read the lines which contain T. Then i store that lines in array. My code shows error when i used sort methode to sort the array which i store in array.

The sort methode give me this error "Overload resoulation failed because no accessible 'sort' can be called with these argument". Why it shows this error and how i write back the value after sort. Can i use append Text methde.

Mar 2, 2009I'm new to VB.net and have only a few projects under my belt. This one has me stumped!! I need to open a file and search its contents hex byte by byte. (Similar to Hex editor). On finding a particular value I need to replace it with a set hex value then write and close the file. So far I have only managed to read / write the ascii equivilant.
