Open A File That Has Many Lines Of Numerical Data?

I'm a complete novice with VB and any coding in general, but as life will have it, I have to create a program for my Final Year Project at university.In short, the idea is to open a file that has many lines of numerical data, then select the required lines, do some calculations on them and write it into a new file, but the new file must have its own format and the calculations must go into the correct lines.
Im struggling really with how to get it to read the file and then write the new one. Currently I have it so the user can open the file and it will display the data into a text box. I want to then be able to click another button that will convert that data into a new type, and in turn display that in another text box. Then have a save button to save the newly created data. This is what I have so far...(it's not much.I havent really got much of a clue what I am doing lol)

For the code below I get an error for the 1 to 5 part. It says end of statement expected. Is the way i've set out the syntax wrong, e.g the 1 to 5? [code] Also other than storing text to a rich text box what else can store numerical data in multiple lines?

I wish to extract numerical data from a text file and plot the data on a graph using the Zengraph classes. Each record has five variables.
I attempted to use the split function but failed to successfully get past one record.
1) How does one create an array or arrays using a text file containing many records, each with five distinct variables?
2) Is it better to create a number of single-dimension arrays or create one multi-dimensional array?
3) Is it easier to somehow convert a text file to an Excel file, with each variable in its own cell and each record on one row?

what im trying to do and what i have done so far is probably a little backwards not sure sure how to id it any other way.when the user generates an error because a particular file doenst exist ive got my dialoge box to generate an .txt file for each file it errors on, so that the administrator can check and update missing files as an when - shouldnt be many files missing in the first place, should just be new product ranges or item just launched.what im stuck on is:
1. is there a better way
2. how do i open a .txt file and add the extra lines to it, so i re use the file but keeping the previous data.

Here's what i've got so far, i've written all of the data that i'm going to put into my config file, however i'm having trouble reading the specific string values that I need from that ini file. The parts of the ini lines I want to get are the values in between the I've tried using streamreader a couple things but i'm having trouble figuring that out. I need to parse each line of the ini file to get that value in between the single quotations, so that I can set the value for my richtextbox background and text color as well as a few other things that i've set up in my notepad including tab spacing and so on. lots of these different values need to be converted from a string value to integers, and boolean values as well. (4 of them, the rest of them don't have to be changed because they are already string values when my application reads them to determine it's application load settings.
EDIT: I just noticed in the preview that this is from the version of the app where I had streamwriter write "______ value=" & Something to a file. lol some of the (')s are still in this version, so please excuse that little part. I had them in, but took them out so that I could trim data to get a value easier, but I want to use (')s hopefully when all is said and done.For example, just to restate what I want - in the ini file it will read [setting name] value='VALUE'I want to be able to "get" the string value of "VALUE" within the ini file between the 2 single quotations '

I'm having a bit of an issue with this program I have been working on for my class. It's a future values calculator, that takes a single data type, decimal data type and a integer data type does the formula and then spits back out the Future value. this list has tried to mix numerical variable, such as 1, 2,3 within an xpath expression. [code] For some reason, item_ number_ first and item_number_last appear to have no value in the above code snippet, when they do have values they get printed as in the [code]Could anyone please give me some hints on what to modify here to make the numerical data be able to mix within my xpath?

I have code that gets the numerical value of letters in a txt file, it returns a 77 for an M for instance.Anyways so M(077) is the first value i get, and becuase its the first i need to have it effect the first pixel in my image (0,0) i need to take the first value of M 0, and put it in for reds ones diget, lets say 120, i need to put the second integer 7 in the greens one place 127, and i need to do the same with blue, also 127. I have managed to format a text box to be formatted to two decimal places, and to only accept numbers.Only problem is i need to allow the backspace so that if someone types something wrong, they can backspace and type the correct number

I have written a simple script to get a bunch of lines from a text file (they will be filenames eventually) which are split by new lines and puts each one into an array..

The only thing I can do for now is either use the substring function to remove the first character from all array values after 0 but I don't like that because it's messy and what if the split "works" as I want it to one one of the lines and knocks of the first character when I don't want it to.

I need to open an excel file from vb.net and then search it for specific data. I then need to take those data and insert them into text boxes on a form that i have created. This is all controlled by a button click. I already have some code that will open a file dialog box and let me navigate to the correct file, but I am having trouble with the search portion. I have tried the Find function but I am not sure of the proper syntax. I am using Visual Studio 2008 and Excel 2003.

I have a VB.NET dll which pulls out binary data from and opens it as a pdf. It works fine if I create a file on the user's machine and then open that. What I want to do, however, is just open it in Adobe without creating the file on their machine first (there's customer data in the file and we don't want copies of it sitting around unecessarily).
It's possible in ASP.NET to just stream the data to a browser and open it in that without creating the file, but I can't find a similar methodology for doing that straight to Adobe. Does anyone know if this is even possible or do I have to create the file in order to have it open?

I created a VS2010 application that stores data in xml files with a custom extension (e.g. ".ABC") I would like to be able to open an .ABC file and have the application launch with the specific file's data loaded. This is analogous to opening a Word doc and having Word open with the doc loaded. I have searched for a while but can't even think of a phrase that explains this process. Nothing seems to match "You know . . . that thing that happens when you double click on a data file".

I'm extracting data to a text file (notepad) using VB system IO. I'm not sure what is wrong. When i extract the file from computer A, it is OK

But from PC B,

double quote appears on open and end of each lines.

What is the simplest way to add the elements/each line's data into the array while increasing the array as it reads each line? I am trying to open an excel file and write to it as data becomes availableI can create an instance of excel and write to the selected worksheet once. But, I can't seem to write back to the existing file. I keep on getting a null reference error when I try to send new data to the file.The function I am using will run once, but when it returns to the main form, I lose the values of xlApp and xlWorksheet. It appears that going in to the function makes the original values null.

I have a text file containing lines of data (File 1). I need to delete all the lines in another text file (File 2), which are found in file 1.So I could read file 2 line by line. And then once the line has been read, read file 1 line by line to search for a match. But that's going to be painfully slow.Or I could read file 2 into memory. And then read file 1 line by line and REPLACE the lines in file 2 with nothing, therefore deleting them. File 2 could be 100 mb, so I'm not sure about reading it all into memory.

The fact is I'm making an application, which users can install by using a Setup file...once installed the data in the database can be updated by a centralized server. To do this, they can insert a DVD/CD-ROM and export the necessary data towards it. I need to do it that way, because some of the users who really need this data will be using stand alone computers.The application gets it's data from a mdb-file and the connection remains open as long a person works with the application (maybe not the best way to do, but I know :-) )...when the user uses the application, he can perform an export...this exports the .ini-file and pictures (which works fine), but he also needs to export the mdb behind the application...I already tried connection.close() before and connection.open() after the System.IO.File.Copy...but that doesn't seems to work.
