I'm a complete novice with VB and any coding in general, but as life will have it, I have to create a program for my Final Year Project at university.In short, the idea is to open a file that has many lines of numerical data, then select the required lines, do some calculations on them and write it into a new file, but the new file must have its own format and the calculations must go into the correct lines.
Im struggling really with how to get it to read the file and then write the new one. Currently I have it so the user can open the file and it will display the data into a text box. I want to then be able to click another button that will convert that data into a new type, and in turn display that in another text box. Then have a save button to save the newly created data. This is what I have so far...(it's not much.I havent really got much of a clue what I am doing lol)

I'm trying to write a Database manager in VB (2010) that updates a SQL database that compiles and summarizes my financial records. The code works, but I'm having issues with one exception that I think I understand, but can't circumvent. I've built an I/O form that enters a series of purchases and sales into a temporary datatable. After review of the list, the program connects to the database and executes the SQL. That all works and isn't a problem.
For the code below I get an error for the 1 to 5 part. It says end of statement expected. Is the way i've set out the syntax wrong, e.g the 1 to 5? [code] Also other than storing text to a rich text box what else can store numerical data in multiple lines?
I'm having a bit of an issue with this program I have been working on for my class. It's a future values calculator, that takes a single data type, decimal data type and a integer data type does the formula and then spits back out the Future value. this list has tried to mix numerical variable, such as 1, 2,3 within an xpath expression. I have code that gets the numerical value of letters in a txt file, it returns a 77 for an M for instance.Anyways so M(077) is the first value i get, and becuase its the first i need to have it effect the first pixel in my image (0,0) i need to take the first value of M 0, and put it in for reds ones diget, lets say 120, i need to put the second integer 7 in the greens one place 127, and i need to do the same with blue, also 127. I have created a program and would now like to stop users from entering incorrect values/Text inside specific textboxes. For example i would only like text to be entered when a customer name is to be inputted and if a numerical key is pressed a message box will appear saying "sorry letters only" or something in that line. However..... when i go view the text file it displays John smith40, which i want a space between the name and the numeral.
Also as i want a maximum of 5 people added to the mailing list, i would like a function that lets me somehow "adds" an extra 4 people to the text file without overwriting the 1st name, and uses the same "current" form displayed to the user.

I've been writing an application that deals with various system files as well as registry keys. For permission reasons, my application currently runs as administrator. But this isn't really necessary for my main application window, nor is it very appealing for the UAC dialog to pop up everytime my application is started. I've noticed frequently that for some programs, such as AVG, the UAC shield shows up on several buttons throughout the program, the clicking of which does bring up the UAC prompt. But the application as a whole does not demand administrator rights, these rights are only requested as needed. How to isolate security upgrade requests to certain controls and/or methods.
I have code that will validate whether or not the input is numerical. After that's passed validation, I need to check and see if that value is greater than another.

Previously, I wrote a similar program in VB6, which output the results to a rich text box using fixed-width font in order to organize data in columns and used asterisks to delineate table areas and section borders. I then used the printer object for printing the output. This method was very archaic and difficult to modify when changes were necessary.
