is there a data type which i can use as a Url to open a file in my computor . For example i would like to search for a file name in my data base using different critera. But not just being happy to read the URL in a text box . I'll like to click on the data and open the file.

Well im making a program that will Add the Safe File Name of the File opened in the Open File Dialog to the first column of the listview and the File name and path to the second. View 2 RepliesI am using visual studio 2010, service-based database. I created a simple table and created an edit form for that table. But when I save a row and then clear the text of a textbox (which holds a decimal value), it simply does not let me tab off the text box or save it. I put a ErrorProvider to see whats going on. It says "Input string was not in correct format". But I allowed this column to be null in my table. So how do I fix this error. And by the way, it does not happen for all text boxes.

I've used Visual Basic on and off for years, but for some reason this has never crossed my path, though it's probably relatively simple.
I have a program which runs in the background, in the System Tray. (Which is to say it has a NotifyIcon and is Hiding.) Using the Registy, I've added a new item to the right-click menu for certain files (for example PDF) which reads "Accept".
The goal is to have this open the file in my program and have it run the script. The script itself works flawlessly with an Open Dialog box - all it does is change the "comments" on the file. But I can't for the life of me figure out how to do it without the dialog box.
I am creating a web page which converts binary data into a temporary file.The *.tmp file then gets converted to a *.tiff file.This all works fine.
The next step I would like to take, is for the web page to programatically go to the local *.tiff file, and simulate a double click in Windows Explorer.
This should then either Open the file, or ask what program should be used (as per all non recognized file types in windows).
I already know how add text but my problem is add a new line without remove the others lines. for example textbox1="text1"When I press a button I want to add "text1" into the txt file

View 4 RepliesI am having a funny problem with OpenFileDialog that I just cannot solve. Using VB.NET 2008 Pro.
Problem: I run my program and click the menu item associated with this OFD and the OFD opens fine. When I select a file and click OPEN the dialog disappears then reappears. I click OPEN again and it disposes itself then loads the proper file into a form. The same thing happens with the CANCEL button as well.
Question: How do I go about coding the OFD to open a file that has been double clicked on thus bypassing dialogresult.OK . I can't seem to find an answer to this.

I need to open an excel file from vb.net and then search it for specific data. I then need to take those data and insert them into text boxes on a form that i have created. This is all controlled by a button click. I already have some code that will open a file dialog box and let me navigate to the correct file, but I am having trouble with the search portion. I have tried the Find function but I am not sure of the proper syntax. I am using Visual Studio 2008 and Excel 2003.

I have a VB.NET dll which pulls out binary data from and opens it as a pdf. It works fine if I create a file on the user's machine and then open that. What I want to do, however, is just open it in Adobe without creating the file on their machine first (there's customer data in the file and we don't want copies of it sitting around unecessarily).
It's possible in ASP.NET to just stream the data to a browser and open it in that without creating the file, but I can't find a similar methodology for doing that straight to Adobe. Does anyone know if this is even possible or do I have to create the file in order to have it open?

This is analogous to opening a Word doc and having Word open with the doc loaded. I have searched for a while but can't even think of a phrase that explains this process. Nothing seems to match "You know . . . that thing that happens when you double click on a data file".

Im struggling really with how to get it to read the file and then write the new one. Currently I have it so the user can open the file and it will display the data into a text box. I want to then be able to click another button that will convert that data into a new type, and in turn display that in another text box. Then have a save button to save the newly created data. But, I can't seem to write back to the existing file. I keep on getting a null reference error when I try to send new data to the file.The function I am using will run once, but when it returns to the main form, I lose the values of xlApp and xlWorksheet. It appears that going in to the function makes the original values null.
