Write To Appname.exe.config At Runtime?
Dec 15, 2011
I need to allow my end users to update configuration settings, such as the location of a data file. I am storing this in app.config - which is referenced as .exe.config in a deployed situation. The problem is in Windows 7 the user doesnt' have write access to that file. How do i allow the users to write to this file, or optionally prompt for administrator access only when writing to that file? Also open to moving the configuration to another location.

How do you read the default values from the appName.exe.config file? My application only reads these values on first installation. Subsequently, it reads the updated values sitting in the user.config file.

As I say, I've got an application which I'll refer to as "AppName" (note the upper case 'A' and 'N') which, for example, attempts to reference "My.Application.Info.ProductName". Adding a breakpoint and putting a QuickWatch on that call shows the error:

I am creating a test project using IBM's Rational Functional Tester(RFT) tool(we are using the VB version of it and it only supports till .net 3.5).In this project I am making all database queries using the entity framework.The problem is entity framework retrieves "Metadata", "Connection String" etc from the App.Config file,and RFT won't let me add a App.Config to the project(I guess it is designed that way -- I googled adding an App.Config file to an rft project and came up with nothing), and the Entity Framework requires you to have the app.config file at the entry point.I was building the string to pass to entity framework in code, but my boss really does not like that. So looking at my options I think any of the below 2 solutions should suffice
Is their any way to load an App.Config during run-time. Is their any way to add an App.Config to an RFT project(should really be my first question).

How do we overwrite config file at runtime. I have four config files for DEV, TEST, UAT, PROD. Based on user selection I need to overwrite the default config file completely with one of the selection specific config files. These config files not only have appsettings section, but also has complex cutom sections and subelements with lot of attributes. I need to overwrite and refreshsections dynamically at runtime. I know there are so many articles on editing appsettings sections. But I want to completely overwrite the entire file.

Environment: .Net 3.5 VB.net (C#ok too) I wrote a multi-project WinForms app that needs to load a couple dozen variables from a client section of a config file based on user's selection of client. Also some program variables need to be loaded as well. So far so good, I put them in an app.config file.In the appsettings section I put the main program variables. e.g.

How do you write config files for vb programs? Like .xml files, Seen some examples but didn't fully grasp them. Say I had a program that launched programs and I wanted it to save the:Program Name, Program Location, Program Site, etc..So I am guessing the xml would looking something like:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<Configuration>
<Path>
[code]....
how to load the settings from these configs. The reason I want to write it to an external config is because I plan to add an updating feature and I want the configs outside of the program.

The following code has two flaws, I can't figure out if they are bugs or by design. From what I have seen it should be possible to write back to the app.config file using the Configuration.Save and according to[url]... the code should work.
The bugs are shown in the source below and appear when you try to set the property or save the config back out.[code]...

I have a program with various settings, all stored in the app.config file. Often, I have a need to edit the connection string setting. I cannot do so using the My.Settings.myConnectionStringVariable method, as this is read-only. What I would like to do is have a big text box, and simply load the entire app.config file into it. The user could modify whatever they wanted, click save, and the program would save the new edits to the app.config file, and restart the program. I don't have a huge need to only pull out the connection string, as getting the text for the entire config file would suffice. However, if it is easier to pull out just the connection string from the config file, that would work too.

I built an app in VB 2008 Express.I have published it by using the Publish tab of the project properties dialog. In other parts of the publish dialog, I have successfully associated a file extension (.xyz) with my app. To finally publish it, I click the Publish Now button, not the Publish Wizard.The app publishes fine, and after installing it by clicking on the resulting Setup.exe file, it runs fine. The app creates a .xyz file (essentially a text file). I then close the app. In Windows Explorer, I can see the .xyz file with my custom icon. When I double click on the .xyz file, my app starts up.So far so good.
Now I need to implement reading the contents of the .xyz file in my main form's load event.I thought it was going to be easy by following a snippet to read the command line, and with the knowledge that the filename clicked on is the first argument (item 0 of the argument collection).So I started testing like this:
Dim strMessage As String
strMessage = "Count: " & My.Application.CommandLineArgs.Count & vbCrLf
For Each argument As String In My.Application.CommandLineArgs[code]....
So, is the method I'm using to deploy considered Click Once? Note that I am not online-enabling anything, so I am hoping I don't need to get into the ActivationUri learning curve, which seems to be about URL's.How can I simply get the name of the associated file double clicked on into my VB.net app?

Our main application has both a asp.net and winforms component. There is a class that is used by both sides and needs info from either the web.config or app.config files. The class itself does not know if it's on the client side or on the web server (at this point). We are getting errors when it's attempting read app.config when it's on the web side. Is there a way for the class to tell if it needs to read web.config or app.config?

I have an .net addin that loads w/outlook. Being a .NET assembly, I naturally have a .config file that you would expect. From my previous research, I named my app.config file to be Outlook.exe.config because outook is the executing assembly, and naturally, that's where you would expect that. This for the most part is fine.
In some installations, and I am not sure as to the conditions why, My addin will hunt for the config file under the dll name in another directory. So, more clearly stated, Office is in its directory, and my addin dll is in its own. So: MyAddin.dll.config vs. Outlook.exe.config. So, fine, I just made 2 copies of the config file and covered both cases. Now, I find that the addin is hunting for Outlook.exe.config in MY program directory (not the outlook dir)
FYI I log which config file is being used using: [Code] So, can someone tell me WHERE it is determined where the config file is read from, and if I can "Force" it to be used from a certain location?
