Writing Text To An Existing File?
Mar 31, 2009
I have to write data to an existing text file. I know it is possible to write to an existing file. But, my problem is I don't want to append the new data at the beginning or end of the file. I need to append the new data at the specified line.

I'm working on a project where I have to allow users to write data to an existing Excel worksheet (by entering the data into a form created in Visual Basic.NET). I've created a form that allows users to enter data such as the following:
Name (First, Last)
Mailing Address
Email Address
Gender
Age
...and so on. I've programmed the data to be sent to the Excel file upon clicking on the Submit button in the form itself. I've also created the Excel file and placed it on my C: drive, but the problem I'm having is trying to send the data from the VB form to the Excel file itself. Can someone please show me some sample code or point me in the right direction as to how to get the submitted information from the form to save into the Excel file, please?
I'm trying to get the information to show up in rows and columns in Excel like the following below (the dashes are just to show that the information should be in rows and columns):
Name--------------------------Mailing Address-------Email Address-------Gender-------Age
John Doe---------------------2300 Jackson Street-------- xxx@xxxx.com-------Male---------17

I've been developing a arcade game, and as every good arcade game, it has an incorporated scoreboard so that players can see who scored better. My problem is that everytime it enters a new scoreline, it deletes all the previous lines in the text file. The code I've been using is the following:
If player1 > 25 Then
objReader.Close()
MsgBox("O " + jogador1 + " ganhou.")[code]............

I have a very large text file about 4 million lines that I would like to separate into several small text files based on the strings contained in the first column of the text file. I want to open the large text file, choose the lines that apply, create a new text file with a name that has a number at the end of which will match up with the value in the first column of the text file. I want to then copy the applicable lines to the new small text file, save and close it. I'm not sure how to go about doing this after opening the large text file and using the readline method. What if the folder does not exist? Do we have to create it? I want this procedure to be general, as there could be up to 25 million lines in the text file.

What is the simplest way to check for an existing file. Every method shown to me in my text and the information gained from the Visual Studio help doesn't seem to work. Each one of them tells me the syntax is wrong. I just want a simple way to check for an existing text file that is in the defualt file location.MSDN told me to use FileSystem.FileExists(file) - VS would not take this and...My text Tony Gaddis (VB 2008) shows:
If File.Exists(FileName) Then
open file...
Else

Write a program that requests a color as input in a text box and then determines whether or not the color is in the text file. The program should use the Boolean-valued Function procedure IsCrayola that returns the value True if the color in the text box is a Crayola color.
*I am to use a file named Colors.txt

How to modify a line in an existing text file in VB. This is the code I was told to use:
do while (sr.peek() <> -1)
line = sr.readLine()
if line(0) = stockName then
' update the line
updatedLine = line(0) & "," & line(1) & "," & line(2) &
else
' don't do anything
loop
The problem is that when I use that I get the error message that says:
Error1'Line' statements are no longer supported. File I/O functionality is available as 'Microsoft.VisualBasic.FileSystem.LineInput' and the graphics functionality is available as 'System.Drawing.Graphics.DrawLine'.

I'm using the following code to import data from a text file into an existing Access table:
Code:
Imports System.Data.OleDb
Public Class Carrega_CSV
Private Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click
[Code]....
The first time i ran the code, it caused no error but no records where loaded into the table. The second time it causes the OleDbException "Table 'TEMP' already exists." The text file is comma delimited and it has exactly the same number of columns of the TEMP table.

This is my first post in the community. I am putting together a program that serves two functions:1. Takes input from TextBoxes and writes it to a text file.2. Takes the text from the text file and displays two specific strings of text in a MessageBox.This is the code for the button that writes the input to file.
Private Sub facSubmitButton_Click(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles facSubmitButton.Click
Dim facultyRecord As String = "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Desktop\teeny.txt"

I have just recently been using VB 2010 after using VB5. I have noticed a lot of changes. The problem I have is that I wish to open and save text files to and from arrays in the background. I've attached what I would do in VB5. I have searched around, but all the examples I find use a Textbox instead of an array. Can anyone show me how I can do this with VB 2010?

I am attempting to gather a group of file names from a directory. I am able to do this. I tested the code by having the list populate into a listbox and all desired items were added to the list.
Here is my code:
Dim di As New IO.DirectoryInfo(strPath)
Dim dir1 As IO.FileInfo() = di.GetFiles("*.txt")
Dim dFiles As IO.FileInfo
ListBox.Items.Add(dFiles)
However, a listbox is not my desired output. I am attempting to write these file names to a text file for purposes of then parsing the information to a datatable to compare with another datatable. How to get my filenames written to a textfile.

We have some information that we need to write (about 18KB) to a .txt file stored in one of our network drives. The file is re-written about once every 15 minutes but is read practically at least every second. We are currently using StreamWriter to write file.The file server is in remote location and the round trip ping varies from <1ms to 15ms.
The problem is, sometimes it takes as long as 6 seconds to write the contents to the file, which is definitely way too long even after we take consideration of the network speed. therefore, I am just wondering if there is any efficient way to write the file using VB.Net to improve the performance? Java has a very good tool named BufferedOutputStream, which unfortunately is not available in VB.Net (or I just have not found it).
