What is the simplest way to check for an existing file. Every method shown to me in my text and the information gained from the Visual Studio help doesn't seem to work. Each one of them tells me the syntax is wrong. I just want a simple way to check for an existing text file that is in the defualt file location.MSDN told me to use FileSystem.FileExists(file) - VS would not take this and...My text Tony Gaddis (VB 2008) shows:

I've been developing a arcade game, and as every good arcade game, it has an incorporated scoreboard so that players can see who scored better. My problem is that everytime it enters a new scoreline, it deletes all the previous lines in the text file. The code I've been using is the following:

I have a very large text file about 4 million lines that I would like to separate into several small text files based on the strings contained in the first column of the text file. I want to open the large text file, choose the lines that apply, create a new text file with a name that has a number at the end of which will match up with the value in the first column of the text file. I want to then copy the applicable lines to the new small text file, save and close it. I'm not sure how to go about doing this after opening the large text file and using the readline method. What if the folder does not exist? Do we have to create it? I want this procedure to be general, as there could be up to 25 million lines in the text file.

After writing the first line, the text fields are cleared to make space for another round of user input. Simply said, this is how it should look[code]....

How to modify a line in an existing text file in VB. This is the code I was told to use:

The problem is that when I use that I get the error message that says:
Error1'Line' statements are no longer supported. File I/O functionality is available as 'Microsoft.VisualBasic.FileSystem.LineInput' and the graphics functionality is available as 'System.Drawing.Graphics.DrawLine'.

I need to create a timer that sets the time from an existing text file. The time format in the text file is 00:00:00 (hours,minutes, seconds). An excerpt from one of my text files looks like ClockSet = "00:49:05"
Also, if possible, when the timer reaches 2 minutes I would like the backcolor to flash between red and green.

I am currently writing a program in VB 2008. Here is what the program is intended to do: I need it to have two forms of input, so I want it to open existing text files and create new ones. Once the user has selected what input to be taken (either a file is opened or a new one is made, guessing multiple forms need to be used here) the user will then take the text file either created or opened and then be able to click a button which will sort all the text in the text file into alphabetical order and then display the results to the screen. While this happens, I need the words in the file to be counted by a counter (so a loop i guess) that then displays on which line each word appears on. I then need this information to be displayed in a text box on screen.

I'm using jmcilhinney's library (found here), with a few modifications to make it compatible with VB.NET 2008. Using this forum's search feature, I see that it has been noted that SharpZipLib does support adding files to existing archives, but jmcilhinney's library does not implement this feature, and I have no idea where to start in writing my own method.

I have a workbook (Workbook1) that runs through some steps using visual basic, which ends up opening another workbook Workbook2). Once Workbook 2 is opened, I need to copy a section of data from it, into Workbook1 int a specific worksheet. I was able to do this by recording a macro, but the challange is, the name of Workbook 1, and Workbook 2, will vary by User. When I created the macro it uses the files as they are currently named. Hi, i'm trying to use the treeview to display the text of a rtf (rich text file) file when an specific node if clicked.HomeOMGWOOTFor example, if i pick OMG, i want the text of lol.rtf to be displayed on a richtextbox. here i am reading files from one root folder and after reading that we are moving that particular file Success folder and taking a copy of that in to back up folder normal
while reading file i will check file naming convention by targeting backup folder if suppose it was exists in backup folder then i m moving the file to duplicate folder

Not sure what I am doing wrong here but I have 2 buttons and a rich text box. The issue is when I click the second button to add text to the rich text box and it over writes the current text that is already in the rich text box. How can I code this second button so that the text is added to the rich text box and not replacing the current text?

I know how to write and read files but I can't seem to add 1 to an existing file.
This file currently contains "10" but when I click a button I want it to +1 to that number.
I've tried a.WriteLine(+= 1) but it gives me an Expression Expected erorr which I don't get how to fix or what's wrong with it.
