View 1 RepliesI can access a module from code behind but not from the aspx page in inline VB code <% ... %>.
View 2 RepliesI'm converting a VB.net library to C# and having trouble finding the C# equivalent to a VB.Net Public Module.
In the same VB class is a With block. Any idea what the equivalent might be for that as well.
I have a variable declared at Public on a form. But when I try to access it in a module I get an error that its not declared.

I have a situation where I have several VB.NET Modules in the same Logical-Module of a large application. I would like the update function of each module to be public, but I would like users to be forced to qualify the function call with the module name.
ModuleName.Update()
instead of
Update()
Is this possible?
I have a public module from which I want to use Form1 components. How do I do that? For example:
Module Print_to_textbox1()
what goes here for me to display a message into a textbox1 on Form1?
End Module
I am just testing how to use dll and after googling a lot, I made it work partially...Created new project Class Library, named it myFirstDll and made a Public Shared Sub helloDll to do something. Now since this is my first time, the dll is simply showing the input in a msgbox:
Public Shared Sub helloDll(ByVal msg As String)
If msg <> "" Then
MsgBox(msg, MsgBoxStyle.OkOnly, "WE HAVE SOME MSG")
Else
MsgBox(msg, MsgBoxStyle.OkOnly, "NO MSG")
End If
End Sub
After building the dll-file, I started a new project using normal windows forms, named it "useMyDll", I clicked Project -> Add Reference, and added my dll. The program file that I made needed a textbox and a button for using the dll:
Private Sub useDllButton1_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles useDllButton1.Click
Dim msg As String = Nothing
msg = TextBox1.Text
myFirstDll.myFirstDLL.helloDll(msg) 'this will be in msgbox in dll-file
End Sub
And when running this I could write something in the textbox and a msgbox with that input would pop up. Really happy with that. My first attempt to make a dll and use it was very successful. Then I thought, what about running the dll from rundll32.exe? It would be handy to make a dll that could be run without my exe. After googling a long time, I tried to add a new button:
Private Sub useDllButton2_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles useDllButton2.Click
'Now let us see if we can open it using rundll32.exe ?
Dim msg As String = Nothing
msg = TextBox1.Text
[CODE]...
Now the first button still works just fine, but the second button gives some error (translated to english would be) like "missing entry: helloDll" I also tried to open with command prompt, same result.
After googling again I read one place that you can't run a visual basic dll with rundll32.exe, so is this true? Or is there some way of doing it? I read one place that it works if you make the dll be "COM-Visible", but I don't really understand how to or what it means. I tried to open properties, clicked Assembly Information, and "Make assembly COM-Visible", but this doesn't change anything. Then I read somewhere that it has to be in a module to work. Could it be that I need to rewrite some codes and it would work, or would I have to start learning c++ in order to accomplish this?
Im new in this forum. I just recently upgraded my Visual Studio 2003 to Visual Studio 2008.I have a web project which is working very well in Visual Studio 2003. But when Im trying to run the same project in Visual Studio 2008, Im getting a runtime error message.The error message is about a public function which is defined in a public module. When Im trying to call that function from different web pages of my project, the web pages are not recognising the public functions and asking me to

I have a text box for input of the TRADE IN VALUE of a car. the program is looking for a numeric input. If there is no trade in, how can i get this box to default to 0.00 so it doesnt error the program?
View 2 RepliesI have a public readonly variable in a module, but when I try to set it in my form load event for the first time I get 'ReadOnly' variable cannot be the target of an assignment. It is my understanding that a ReadOnly variable can only be set once and after that you would get an error when setting it.

Can one client call a public property within a VB.NET module and see the value of that public property changed by another client accessing it at the same time?
[Code].....
I'm running into random instances where it looks like another client might be modifying (by setting) the value of GetSetDateTime DURING the first client's run through of WhateverMethod(). This is alarming to me and I've been trying to figure out if that's a possibility.
I am writing a control application for an inteface card. The complicated work of initialising communication with the card is written and working fine. However, my problem is to update the text in a dialog label on the communication interface form from a module that contains all the coding for accessing the inteface card. From the module, the interface dll returns data that describes some typical connection errors and the module then calls on Public Subs in the form to display error messages; for example:This is the Public Sub in the Module that initiates communication with the interface card:
Public Sub OpenDeviceInterface()
DeviceID = 1 - My.Resources.DeviceID
h = OpenDevice(DeviceID)
Select Case h
Case 0, 1, 2, 3
[code]....
What happens when these Public subs are called from the module is that the MSgBoxes I made to test the routine show up but the label text doesn't appear.I've tried; Refresh, on the label and the form without success...
if it is possible to place the openfileDialog in public class or module? i tried to place it with this code, but it did not work.

i am working on the MSDN tutorials through virtual labs and am encountering a problem with the very first tutorial regarding consoles. I am required to create two notepad files: Module HelloWorld & Public Class Person which I have done without errors having triple checked them. When the files are created I compile the HelloWorld.vb file and a .exe is created
I follow the rest of the steps and encounter an error when i try to compile the Person.vb file using the line vbc Person.vb/t:library/out:HelloWorldLib.dll as i am getting the following errors:
vbc : Command line error BC2001 : file 'HelloWorld.vb/t:library/out:HelloWorldLib.dll' could not be found
vbc : Command line error BC2008 : no input sources specified
1. In the old VBScript, there was a compareMethod (binary or text, which with text, I could compare case) but I don't find anything like that in the new .Net Replace method. I know I can use the old way, but I'd like to use the new Replace method. I just need a choice of comparing case or not?
2. Let's say I have a long string, and I am using the Replace method - - it would be nice to get the count of instances replaced, and I'm sure that if I read line by line, I could actually get that count, but it would take to long.Is there a way, using the Replace method, to get a count of how many actual replacements were made?
I have a dll name "infrServ.dll" and I need to list all the public methods/functions that can be used. How can I do that? I know it's with Reflexion but I don't know how to use it.
View 5 RepliesI've got this code here, hard coded into a button. What I want to do is create a module with a method, let's call it "openFile."
That way, in the future, I can just call openFile("default directory",file type, etc etc) and also being able to set the input from the reader as the text in a text box or something all in one line of code. Is this possible? I don't know anything about writing modules or my own methods/API or anything like that...Can someone point me to a tutorial about this?
Here's the

I'm working through a book that does not provide a lot of example code and what it does provide is in C#. The book refs vs 2005 but I'm using vs2008. The author asks for the user to create a solution with two projects, one winforms and the other a class library (called DependentAssm). The class library is added as a reference to the winforms project In the class library, he asks one to create a new class called SayHelloComp. The project created a file called class1.vb, and a class called class1 which I renamed to SayHelloComp. I left the file name alone, that's ok right?
View 4 Repliesi want to extend the integer class to a method that increments current integer value by 2. I create a console application and a second module which contains the extension method.
Imports System.Runtime.CompilerServices
Module StringExtensions
<Extension()>
[code]....
and everything works fine. The extension method module can be imported to any other project (Project-->add existing item --> select the vb file that contains the extension method module) and works fine too. But the code is accessible to other users. Is there a method to convert the extension method module to a dll and adding it to other projects as a reference. I tried to do it with creating a class project and pasting the code of the extension method module and compile the dll and then added it as reference to another project and imported the class with the keyword imports, but it didn't work.

what websites, books or courses you guys suggest to use so I learn the fundamentals of programming. What is a class, method, namespace, private vs public. That leads me into .Net programming. A lot of intro to programming use java or C++ as the platform but I want to find one with VB.net or maybe C# if.
View 6 RepliesI have written a method to replace multiple characters in a string. Is it possible to overload my own method to the existing method "Replace" in the String namespace?
Function Replace(ByVal inValue As String, ByVal ParamArray replacechars() As String) As String
For i As Integer = 0 To UBound(replacechars) Step 2
[Code].....
As you can see it have a different signature from the public method so I think it would be nice to have my method overloading the existing method
I can live with it if it isn't possible. See it as a "nice to have"
I'm trying to create an overloaded method in a module, but if I type Public Overloads Function GetData(ByVal sql As String) As String it tells me "Inappropriate use of 'Overloads' keyword in a module". Are overloaded methods not allowed in modules?

error i get is "Invoke on Non-Existent or Non-public proxy method"
Can we override a Public Shared method in derived class? If not why?
View 2 RepliesI was just practicing some coding and noticed that I was able to use class instead of Module in VB .NET. So I replaced my module to class and I got this error message:No accessible 'Main' method with an appropriate signature was found in 'practicevb'.practicevb
I made sure that the startup object was set correctly in Properties > Application > Startup Objects.The error message disappears if I change it back to Module but I would like to keep it class since the other parts of my code I changed to class and didn't return and error messages.

I have a VB .net application which works fine on a 32 bit systems. We tried using it on a 64bit Windows 7 system but it failed. So I set up an environment in a VM (windows 7 64bit VS 2005 SP1 all updated) and started debugging there. The problem I come across is, I have a module (Public variables and function declarations from a driver provider FTDI). When a function from module is called the result is saved in a variable also from module. But the problem is the variable is not declared.
View 1 RepliesI'm trying to make a collection class for buttons to address them as a whole, only I want to design the buttons at design time, and not add/set their properties programatically at runtime. Each button has its own image, so it doesn't seem right to add a bunch of lines of code which assign the properties when they're always going to be the same thing.Is it possible to create the controls at design time and then add them to an array at runtime? I did this, iterating through the buttons on the form and adding each of them to the class below.The problem is that once they're added they seem to be a different instance because changing their positions has no effect on the design-buttons on the form. Essentially i wanted the collection to be a reference to the items belonging to the form.Is that possible or should I be doing this a different way?[code]
