Create A Module With A Method?
Jul 10, 2010
I've got this code here, hard coded into a button. What I want to do is create a module with a method, let's call it "openFile."
That way, in the future, I can just call openFile("default directory",file type, etc etc) and also being able to set the input from the reader as the text in a text box or something all in one line of code. Is this possible? I don't know anything about writing modules or my own methods/API or anything like that...Can someone point me to a tutorial about this?
Here's the
Private Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click
Dim filesOpen As New OpenFileDialog()
filesOpen.InitialDirectory = ("C:") 'set the default directory
[code]....

I'm trying to create an overloaded method in a module, but if I type Public Overloads Function GetData(ByVal sql As String) As String it tells me "Inappropriate use of 'Overloads' keyword in a module". Are overloaded methods not allowed in modules?

i want to extend the integer class to a method that increments current integer value by 2. I create a console application and a second module which contains the extension method.
Imports System.Runtime.CompilerServices
Module StringExtensions
<Extension()>
[code]....
and everything works fine. The extension method module can be imported to any other project (Project-->add existing item --> select the vb file that contains the extension method module) and works fine too. But the code is accessible to other users. Is there a method to convert the extension method module to a dll and adding it to other projects as a reference. I tried to do it with creating a class project and pasting the code of the extension method module and compile the dll and then added it as reference to another project and imported the class with the keyword imports, but it didn't work.

I was just practicing some coding and noticed that I was able to use class instead of Module in VB .NET. So I replaced my module to class and I got this error message:No accessible 'Main' method with an appropriate signature was found in 'practicevb'.practicevb
I made sure that the startup object was set correctly in Properties > Application > Startup Objects.The error message disappears if I change it back to Module but I would like to keep it class since the other parts of my code I changed to class and didn't return and error messages.
Class Atic
Sub Main()
Console.WriteLine("Hello, this proram will calcaulate the quadratic forumla ax^2 + bx + c")
Dim Quads As New Quads

I have a large problem with inheritance in vb.net. The problem is the following:
I have 2 forms => frmBase and frmChild
In frmBase i want to create a method Called StartWorking() and i want frmChild to inherit this method.
But here is the tricky thing: when frmChild.StartWorking is called i would like the following => without calling MyBase.StartWorking()
I want frmBase.StartWorking() to be executed first and after a test in frmBase.StartWorking if blnValue is true then frmChild.StartWorking has to be activated. if blnValue is false that frmChild.StartWorking cannot be activated.

I'm trying to use it in writing VB.NET Windows Form code.So I'm thinking, instead of using a VB.NET module, or having code embedded in the forms, I should create my own "Control" Class, to handle all operations and "application" level variables.Is this the right approach?Ex:
Private Sub frmLogin_Load(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles MyBase.Load
goControl = New MyControlClass()
goControl.sUserID = txtUser.text[code]....

I want to create a new module in DNN (VB) ... that;
1. does not use DAL or DAL+
2. has only one view.ascx control
3. It has to be a compiled module
I do not need DB connectivity and any bells and whistles just one view control. I thought it would be simple but googling for a day now and it seems very complicated.

Reasonably experienced programmer but newbie question on VB Express 2010: I have coded my 1st attempt at my project. I now want to save the work I have done and branch the code but be able to go back to what I did before if I screw up. What is the best practice? Do I get any help from Visual Studio. I could save a copy of the code in another directory or different file name

Basically, we have three databases to grab data from. One is a SQL Server database, one is an Access database (which is particularly annoying to connect to because we have to map a network drive and such), and the final one will be an Oracle database when IT finally gives us rights.I'm thinking about creating a helper function that makes querying any one of these databases as easy as possible. I want to create a two-dimensional array
Dim myEasyResultArray(10,10) as String
myEasyResultArray = DatabaseHelper("Access", "SELECT * FROM Employee")
Is this a good design decision? Also, how can I have the array be the right size? Can I just do this?
Dim myEasyResultArray = DatabaseHelper("Access", "SELECT * FROM Employee")
Should this be a module or a class? I don't really need to share variables?

i am trying to create a module that will start a thread to go do something. once the "something" is done i want to notify the calling form that the event is complete. i left out the thread stuff since its not relevant to the question. the following code would work fine in VB6, but .net sees it as an error because FRM does not have a FRM.done, "DoSomething" would could called by multiple forms [Code]

The company I work for has a VB6 project that is using an ACCESS database.The project consists of seperate modules such as Accounts Payable, Payroll, General Ledger, and Inventory.At the current time each module is a seperate project in VB6 and the EXE files are called when needed.In total there are about 1300 forms in the project.We are moving from ACCESS to Sql Server and from VB6 to VB2008.The question that I (we) have is as follows; Should we continue to keep each module seperate and call the EXE's or should we create one large project?What are the pros and cons for each way?Is there something written that explains the advantages of either?

i am working on the MSDN tutorials through virtual labs and am encountering a problem with the very first tutorial regarding consoles. I am required to create two notepad files: Module HelloWorld & Public Class Person which I have done without errors having triple checked them. When the files are created I compile the HelloWorld.vb file and a .exe is created
I follow the rest of the steps and encounter an error when i try to compile the Person.vb file using the line vbc Person.vb/t:library/out:HelloWorldLib.dll as i am getting the following errors:
vbc : Command line error BC2001 : file 'HelloWorld.vb/t:library/out:HelloWorldLib.dll' could not be found
vbc : Command line error BC2008 : no input sources specified

I have found a lot of articles about Reflection and know how to create a class. I'm practicing how to work properly with the reflection to create a module/plugin-based application.So I found a simple example which is working great, but it isn't dynamic enough, 'cause it is hard-coded. I need to read all the .dll's from the application.startuppath & "modules" & *.dll and get there names (without the .dll).Code is was testing for practice returns the form (I know that this is not the correct way to call the dll dynamically):
vb.net
Imports System.Reflection Public Class Form1 Private Sub cmdOK_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles cmdOK.Click Dim assemblylink As [Assembly] assemblylink = [Assembly].LoadFrom(Application.StartupPath & "/" & "LoginAssembly.dll") Dim LoginFrm As Form LoginFrm = assemblylink.CreateInstance("LoginAssembly.Login") LoginFrm.Show() End Sub

I'm working through a book that does not provide a lot of example code and what it does provide is in C#. The book refs vs 2005 but I'm using vs2008. The author asks for the user to create a solution with two projects, one winforms and the other a class library (called DependentAssm). The class library is added as a reference to the winforms project In the class library, he asks one to create a new class called SayHelloComp. The project created a file called class1.vb, and a class called class1 which I renamed to SayHelloComp. I left the file name alone, that's ok right?

For the last week I've been trying to create an async method. I tried the MSDN article How to: Implement a Component That Supports the Event-based Asynchronous Pattern but it does the work in a method in the same class. The work I'm doing is a lot more complicated and is its own class. The problem I'm having is the class doing the work cannot post the progress or completion as the methods that handle this stuff is in the parent class.
