Add Text To Text File, Not Overwrite?
Jun 28, 2010
I cant seem to figure out how to add text to a text file without overitting all of it. I am using:
Code:
File.WriteAllText
I guess I could read it, copy, and then write it all over. Is there a way to just add text to the end of the current text of a text file?

I have a log file that is open and in use by another program, and I read it's contents with the following:[code]This works for reading the text from the file while it is still in use by the other program, however, immediately after this I need to truncate the text file (without deleting it) so that it is blank again. But the file will still be in use by the other program.[code]But I get the "in use by another application" exception. I've tried looking in StackOverflow and googling but I can't seem to find an answer, and I can't find a way to do this with filestreams either, or I would try to use Dim fs As New FileStream(FullPath, FileMode.Open, FileAccess.Write, FileShare.ReadWrite)

How to read from a line in vb .net, I need to do the following:
change the line in a text file
[Path] = "c: hiscertainpath"
With this line
[Path] = "c: hatother
ewerpath"
These paths will most certainly be different lengths, so I need to either replace what's in the quotes or erase the line completely and enter a new one, but in the same spot, not appended to the end of the document.

I'd like to open a text file and not allow any other processes to write to it. I understand I can do this with the following FileStream:Dim fs As New FileStream(_FilePath, FileMode.Open, FileAccess.ReadWrite, FileShare.Read)
Once I have access like this I need to read all of the lines (I will use a StreamReader(fs)) and then I will need to write to the file (I will use a StreamWriter(fs)).
The problem here is that the StreamWriter won't allow me to set the append mode to false (so I can overwrite all text in the file) when I use the filestream as a parameter instead of the file path. So all text written with the StreamWriter is appended onto the text which I don't want. If I use a StreamWriter with the file path (which will let me set append to false) as the parameter instead of the filestream it will be locked out because of the FileStream FileShare. How can I still have exclusive access to read and write to the file but still be able to overwrite the existing text (append mode false)?

I am reading a temperature value from a transceiver into the serial port and I want this value to change the value of a label in my Visual Basic Form. This value changes every few seconds. I am using the code below:
Me.dataReceived.Text &= [text]
where dataReceived is the label I am using and [text] is the data I am reading from the serial port. This results in the data being displayed but instead of overwriting the label, it writes the value after each other. (The data is appended). I tried to remove the & before the = but this did not work as nothing showed up.?The code I am using is the following:
'To receive data into the text field
Private Sub SerialPort1_DataReceived(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.IO.Ports.SerialDataReceivedEventArgs) Handles SerialPort1.DataReceived
[code].....

Hi, i'm trying to use the treeview to display the text of a rtf (rich text file) file when an specific node if clicked.HomeOMGWOOTFor example, if i pick OMG, i want the text of lol.rtf to be displayed on a richtextbox. But somehow i just can't manage to get it... I know to import the text of a .txt file to a textbox, but using the treeview makes it more complicated.This is the code im using right now:
Private Sub TreeView1_NodeMouseClick(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.Windows.Forms.TreeNodeMouseClickEventArgs) Handles TreeView1.NodeMouseClick
Select Case e.Node.Index
Case 0
[code]....
Another thing is, that i can't import the *.rtf text into a richtextbox and i don't know why.

So I'm in the final stages of finishing a program I've been working on for nearly a year now, and this is basically my final hurdle. The Save dialogue is working beautifully, with 'flags' in order to switch it over from the regular input into text boxes to the Listbox input protocol.
However, I'm having a *** of a time getting it to take lines from the text file and put them in the proper text box. Here is an example file:
Quote:
SHOWNAME
CALLNAME
BREED
[Code]....
So with the sample file I provided above, in the textbox named callNameText would appear "SHOWNAME", and so on and so forth. With this build, I get a NullReferenceException on the "Me.Controls(strboxNames(i)).Text() = strAllText(ati)" line.

I want to create a text file or see if a text file exists when application starts. The problem I was having was after creating the text file, I tried to write to text file and got an error saying that another process was using it.
Dim test As String = My.Computer.FileSystem.SpecialDirectories.MyDocuments & " est1.txt"
If System.IO.File.Exists(test) Then
MsgBox("File Loaded")
Else
[code]....
I looked up topics on filestream, but am unsure if this is how to use it. Is my code ok? Is there another way to create a text file?

I have another text file called header.txt which need to match its value with the value of Drill.txt file then overwrite value from Drill.txt to header.txt. Now i want to make my Drill.txt in encrypted format to prevent anyone to open that file and modify out of program. They only can modify it through the program

what would be the optimum code in VB2010 that check a file to determine:
1) is it a text file, and
2) if it is a text file, does it contain any non-ASCII characters
Note that LF, CR, and EOF would be expected, and should not be flagged. I can think of 3 - 4 ways to do it, but there may be a 'best' way in terms of simplicity and speed.

I've been looking through the FCL for a method that will allow me to erase a line of text from a text file and replace it with another line of text. Neither the StreamReader nor StreamWriter have a method for replacing or removing Text from a text file, as does the string object. Are there any available methods for erasing just certain lines of text from a file, and then replacing them with others?
In my code, I'd like to locate a certain line in the text file, and then at that point in the text file, use a For...Next Loop to replace each successive line of the text file with new text:
Dim user_data_file As String = "user_data.txt"
edit_input = New StreamReader(user_data_file)
Dim edit_line As String = edit_input.ReadLine
[CODE]...
However, I can't find any methods that will allow me to do this.

I have a very large text file about 4 million lines that I would like to separate into several small text files based on the strings contained in the first column of the text file. I want to open the large text file, choose the lines that apply, create a new text file with a name that has a number at the end of which will match up with the value in the first column of the text file. I want to then copy the applicable lines to the new small text file, save and close it. I'm not sure how to go about doing this after opening the large text file and using the readline method. What if the folder does not exist? Do we have to create it? I want this procedure to be general, as there could be up to 25 million lines in the text file.

Now the problem; the label will only work if it is clicked because the event handler is click.What I need is this to work automatically at startup. In other words, it should change the label's text to the random string of the text file on startup of the application.

I've been writing a weight program for flooded pressure vessels and I'm having trouble retrieving the data from the text files I've been saving. I know how to write the data to the text file, but retrieving it with OpenFileDialog is not so easy for me.The user has individual text boxes that they input strings or numbers into and when they save the file, each text box input is written to one line in the text file. For example, the first text box is for the username, therefore the first line of text that is saved is the person's name, the second text box is the customer, thus the second line in the text file is the customer name, and so on.
(Actually, the first line of text in the saved file designates whether English units were used or Metric units because when the user retrieves the saved file, English units will open one form and Metric units will open a separate form, so some If...Then statement will need to occur).I need to be able to read the first line, have either my "EnglishForm"form open or my "MetricForm" form open, and then have each subsequent line of text be displayed in their corresponding text boxes. I know I need to use ReadLine or LineInput, but I don't have a clue what to do.Assuming the syntax I've displayed below would just magically work (if only life were that easy), it would look something like this
If FirstLineOfTextInFile = "English" Then
EnglishForm.Show()
ElseIf FirstLineOfTextInFile = "Metric" Then[code]....
And so on...I read a lot of articles from the MSDN library and exhausted each link that I've looked through from Google and Bing, but most only retrieve data from the file to a single text box through some loop or streamreader and don't take into account multiple forms.
