Add User Updates To A Database?
Dec 15, 2011I got the printing. Now how can I allow users to update the database, such as Add, Change, or Delete records accordingly? Then I am finished with my project.

View 1 RepliesI am designing a fairly small application to manage a waiting area for a clinical department. There will be a receptionist who books appointments and updates exisiting appointments to say that a patient has "Arrived". In seperate rooms will be nurses who call patients who have "Arrived" and update the appointment as "In Session" and finally as "Discharged". The appointments are viewed in a flexgrid with nurses across the top and time down the left, patient names are displayed at the relevant times and the cells are shaded a colour to represent the current appointment status ("Booked", "Arrived", "In Session" and "Discharged").
I am using SQL Server as the back-end and Visual Basic 6 (I know) as my front-end.I have been told that there will be 2 or 3 nurses plus the receptionist logged in to the system but I would like to cater for growth. My question is what is the best mechanism to use in order to reflect the status change made by one user on the screens of the other users currently logged in?
I have been thinking about using a timer to refresh the data at a set interval but I do not want to keep hitting the server excessively (although what is considered excessive? we would be talking about a call for data every 60 secs per user). Plus the server could be serving data for many other applications so this is another consideration.Alternatively I have been thinking about sending some kind of message via Winsock to the other users notifying them of data changes as they happen. I don't have a lot of experience with this and am concerned about clients not receiving messages and users seeing old data. It also seems strange to me that once the days appointments have been retrieved from the database that "in theory" a client could go the whole day without having to query the database again to pick up changes - kind of scary. Some information on the data:We would probably be looking at around 100 appointments per day We capture patient name, date of birth, date and time of appointment and appointment status. What is the standard approach / best practice for this kind of scenario?
I wrote a sub that would update an Active Directory user's phone numbers using the lines below:
SetProperty(dirEntryResults, "telephoneNumber", strPhoneNumber)
SetProperty(dirEntryResults, "mobile", strPhoneMobileNumber)
The telephone number updates successfully but the mobile number never updates although the strPhoneMobileNumber variable has a valid phone number value. The code executes without any errors. What do I need to do to change the mobile number?
Sub UpdateUserAcct(ByVal userLogin As String, ByVal strPhoneNumber As String, ByVal strPhoneMobileNumber as String)
Dim dirUser As DirectoryEntry = GetDirectoryEntry()
Dim dirUserSearcher As DirectorySearcher = New DirectorySearcher(dirUser)

Before performing an update, the application must search for that record in the database. Once it's found then it return to the Data access layer. Typicaly when i return rows i return them in a dataset. The i send it to the client to load on to the ListView Constrol or to textbooxes. therefore data was sent from the dataset object, therefore onces the user has made updates to the data, first i must update the dataset.
In the Data access layer i can write method that contains the command object for update DB and bind it with the current Dataset so that each time dataset updates it sychrinizes DB with it. Assume i have a method called update() in teh business layer that calls the updateDB in the DataAccess Layer, how can i call the Update() of the business layer each time the user updates the dataset?
how to check if a field( a cell within a database for talk sake date of birth) has been edited in the past then flag it now this field may not be change for a year but how do i keep a record of that and the flag it if it is change.
View 1 RepliesI have one specific problem, that is relative to DataTable Updates to Database.
Code:
auxDatatable = Mydataset.MyDatatable.GetChanges
Now i'm going to Accept or Reject Changes based on some Criteria. The problem is that I wish to Update Only the Records that in Fact exist on the Database, as you can imagine I was forced to create some Dummy Records in Datatable, to a specific job.
My approach to this issue was to do something like this :
Code:
Private Sub MySub (ByVal auxDatatable As DataTable)
Dim drView As Mydataset.Mydatatable
For i As Integer = 0 To auxDatatable.Rows.Count - 1
[CODE]...
As you can see I tried to Delete the rows that are Dummys, but the rows in fact are not being deleted. As consequence I get an error after that Sub, when i try to make :
Code:
MyTableAdapter.Update(auxDatatable)
This is naturaly caused by the dummy Records.
I'm using mysql database..I have forms setup main form has datagrid..you can add to this datagrid and save to datbase with my add form and it works fine. I can delete from the datagrid and it works fine...when I select an account to edit is when I have my issue...form edit brings up the selected account but when I save my changes it doesn't save to the selected account it changes my first account in the database......
Here is a sample of my code
Private Sub btnSave_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles btnSave.Click
' 'Save changes to database and exit
Dim intResponse As String
intResponse = MsgBox("Do you want to SAVE Changes to this record?", vbOKCancel, "Save?")

I have a form in my application that presents users with a datagridview which pulls data from database-a. I then offer the users the ability to edit that data but what I'd like to do is when they click the save event, that it saves their changes to database-b.
View 2 RepliesIve only recently starting fiddling with Visual Basic Express and Sql Databases. Ive managed to get a database up and running, and can query information from it. I have even created a form that can add a new entry to the table im using. The first form has a ComboBox that list the PlayerNames in my table. Form2 allows you to add a new name to the table, but anything I add isnt immediately updated in Form1. I have to relaunch the program to see the new entries. Even then, these new entries dont seem to be permanent as they eventually dissappear. The code I have for Form1:
Public Class Form1
Private Sub Form1_Load(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles MyBase.Load

what's the best way to handle the updates to the database. For example i have one datagridview that's binded to a datatable (with two fields, id auto incremented and a varchar). The user can do all the operations Insert, Update, Delete. If i insert one row (only the text) and call the update method to save the changes to the database, and after that remove the same row and call the update method the adapter will throw a exception because it didn't update the datatable with the value of the id. So the best way to do this is always calling the fill method after every update?
View 22 RepliesSince ADO.Net uses a 'disconnected' model where the data available to a single program is just a copy of what is in the database, what is the normal way to handle multiple programs needing to update the same table in a database? The problem I see is that a program can't update unless his copy of the data is the most up-to-date. Are we supposed to read before updating and hope that the update occurs before someone else changes the data?
View 2 RepliesI'm using a SQL database and I'm writing a VB.NET client application. This application is used on multiple computers at the same time. If one of the clients makes an update to the database I would like to have the other clients to be aware of the update.
Has ony one already done this before?
I've got a question below:load data from a table in database into a datagridview, make change in datagridview, and use update function to update change back to tablebut 13 changes, only 12 being update back to databaseonly the top row on the datagridview not being update??
For Each orow As DataGridViewRow In DataGridView1.Rows
orow.Cells(1).Value = TextBox1.Text

how to implement UI, BL and DAL in a project the way that I see it as a requirement for some projects. The way I am able to do a project now is from a form create an object of a class in which there are properties and functions that do database selects, updates and deletes. Looks to me that doing a project like that is separating the UI from the DAL. In an update button click event I may call Obj. Delete (txtCustID.txt) for example. I don't understand the part of further breaking it down to include a Business layer; in which a vb solution is made up of three solutions. What goes in the BL?Does the BL call the DAL?
View 2 Repliesi seem to have a problem when i try to update a certain record in an Access 2007 Database. I have a small Access 2007 database with 1 table which has 3 Columns and several records. The 3 columns are RecordNumber (Primary Key and it is autonumber), FirstName(text) and LastName(text). What i am trying to do in VB 2008 is implement a search form which when you find a record you can update it. I do not have any problems with the search, but i cannot seem to edit any other record than the first one. For example i search for John which exists, if that record is the 3rd record when i try to edit it whatever changes i make (for example change that to James), the changes i make are made to the first record and not the current one. I tried a lot of things but nothing works, here is my code:

writing user info such as user, computer name, date, and time to an acces database using a button click event. Then use a query to check if the user has accepted the aggreement. If the user has accepted the aggreement then call a vb.exe that display the aggrement. I have a login script that runs the vb.exe and uses a button click that records the user info to a csv file, but if the user has already agreed to the policies I do not want it run again.
View 4 RepliesI'm designing a PC-based app that has a little local database. I'm using VB.NET with SQL Server Compact Edition. The user will only ever have access to one database file, because it's all about storing a user specific data. However I'm thinking of the situation where there could be multiple users that access the PC, each with their own Windows account. So ideally I'd need separate database files for each User.
I'm not sure how to implement this. I was hoping to deploy the 'empty' database as a ClickOnce deployment, but I can't see how I can have a database per user doing this. Also I'm not sure where to store the database files anyway. perhaps in MyDocuments for each user? Or perhaps I need to stick to just one database, but add a 'User' column into every table, so it can hold data for every user. I didn't want to do this though - because I wanted to keep the nice separation between the data offered by physically separate files.
In vb.net I am using password protected database with following connection stringconnetionString = "Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data Source=C:vaivaiDB.mdb;JetOLEDB:Database Password=secret;"Database access works fine on the development machine.
View 2 RepliesI have created an access database which i want to search with vb.net, I tried a few thing but it didnt work as desired.
Firstly the program is suppose to display items in the database base on the criteria selected by the user. what i've succefssfully done so far is I've added a datagrid 2 combobox, 1 (searchcbo) with the columns in the database and the other (searchcbo1) will autoload the items under the column selected in and a button (searchbtn) but i have no clue of the code to put in the button. i also tried the fill method but that didnt work as i wanted to. ultimately i want a combobox with the list of columns and a textbox to enter criteria and of course a search button.
The searchbtn should act as the "WHERE" sql command, e.g. SELECT EmployeeNumber, Firstname, LastName, Phone, Location....etc FROM CallLog WHERE searchcbo.text = searchcbo1.text And display the results in the datagrid.
Private Sub Form1_Load(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles MyBase.Load

I'm using Visual Basic Express 2010 and SQL Express 2008 in Windows XP. At first I couldn't add a datasource (the .mdf file for the database) because of a "Operating system error 32" which I seemed to have resolved by giving myself full permissions for .mdf file (by right clicking on the file and going into properties and then Security) and restarting the SQL SERVER (SQLEXPRESS) service. The dataset for the database is in my solution explorer but when I right click on a table adapter to add a query and attempt to open up the query builder, I get the error in the title above.

View 10 RepliesI am currently working with a vb2010 front end with access as the database. everything works for accessing the information adding information. But when I try to edit/update the contents of a row I find that the update is being applied to the first row of the table rather than the target row. i have tried using the ID as a way to specify the row i want updated but that doesn't appear to work.

View 1 RepliesIn the following code, TextBox5 reports conditions while the mouse is moving over the form, and TextBox7 reports only when the mouse has STOPPED moving over the form. When I start the program, and move the mouse from outside the form, onto the form and don't stop the mouse, the coords continually update in TextBox5 as expected. When I then stop the mouse, TextBox5 clears and TextBox7 reports, "Mouse Hovering", also as expected. Then if I start moving the mouse again, TextBox7 clears, and TextBox5 starts displaying mouse coords again, as expected.

View 8 RepliesWhy does the first method below work? I would have thought that the variable 'row' is completely separate from anything else, such as a row in DataTable1. Also, is there a drawback to using the first method? For changes to lots of columns in a single row, I'd rather do it that way.

Alright, when I open my program I want it to check for updates and if there is an update I want it to download. So far I have a text file saying the most recent version and then it downloads that file and compares it to the current file version. If the current file version < recent version then it will download the file. :O Can someone help me with the code? :3 I have a hosting server with direct download links.
View 5 RepliesI'm unsure of how realistic it is for this to work but I know a lot is possible in vb. I have an application called WindowsPRO available from my filesharewebsit This application is intended for those in school to easily be able to do several daily tasks such as calculate and use notepad within one window. I have been working on this application in part with the help of MSDN.Back OT, currently when I click the "Check for updates" I use process.start to open my website. Not very complicated is it. What I want to do is open a form in whichchecks for the update from my site. Whenever I upload a file, I'll upload it as a .zip onto my site and always name it like: "Application name v1.0" or whatever the version number is. That is the only thing that changes.
When the user presses the check for updates, I want to checkhe site in background for a "higher" version number. If my application is v1.2, I want it to check for anything higher than 1.2. So if I have on the site 1.2.2, or 1.3, I want it to check for the highest number version and download it.My question simply is, how do I check for a "higher version" from a website?
I'm trying to create a form that uses controls that are bound at runtime. All the data objects are declared at the form level. The Select statement includes the two fields that make up the PK form the table. The Owing_Company data displays in the bound control. I can change the text and in Save_Click the RowState is Modified and Row!Owning_company has the changed data. DsForm.HasChanges is False. A simple call in Save_Click daForm.Update(dsForm) does not change the DB. If I update the Row!Owning_Company in code dsForm.HasChanges is now true and daForm.Update changes the data. What am I missing that allows changes made via the bound control to modify the DataSet?
