Asp.net - GridView SORTING Of DYNAMIC Columns And Data Source Scope
Aug 5, 2011
I re-wrote this to make it more readable. If you want to skip right to the chase, look at the ALL CAPS comments in the code blocks. All necessary code has been included for debugging. I've searched multiple forums (including ASP.NET), and the MSDN library and cannot fix this >.<

GridView SORTING of DYNAMIC Columns and Data Source Scope

I have a variable defined as follows:Dim iRows As List(Of String())I've also been converting that to a list of lists just to make it easier to work with.Dim iRows As List(Of IList(Of String))I would like to bind that list to a GridView using the contents of the nested array/list to dynamically define the columns. I don't know ahead of time how many columns there will be, but I do know that they are all the same throughout the list.

sort the listbox that is being populated by data from an exteranl hard drive. The DB's on the Hard drive are contained in folders with a naming format as follows (Jan94 - Dec08)The issue is that on the HD all the folders(yrs) for Apr are listed together and then the rest listed the same way, just sorted based on 1st alpha character. The format I want to show in the list box is as follows:
Jan94
Dec94

Which technology should I use for data access layer?What's the best way of connecting to a dynamic data source and binding the result to a grid?I'm writing a little web app that user can define connection string and table name (MS Sql Server) and the program will display values in that table inside a grid.We must use datasets (because of dynamic data source) and generate the query as a text command ("Select * From " + TableName).We don't have a model (data source is defined by user at run time) so we can not use EF.

I'm trying to format a column from a GriedView based on an XML file as its data source.
I've just set the DataFormatString column property to {0:MM-dd-yyyy} from my BoundFied and set the HtmlEndure to false as well. This bound field has values like 2009-04-17 00:00:00.
But the column is still not getting the expect format (MM-dd-yyyy). I've just checked all orthers properties, but I really did not figure out what is my mistake! Do you have an idea about that?

I use Visual Studio 2010 and SQL Server 2008 R2. I have created an Entity Model in a class library which I have referenced in a VB Winforms project. I created a data source in the project based on the entity model in the dll. However, all columns in the data source are listed in alphabetical order instead of the native order from the SQL Server database. I cannot locate the cause of this as much as I try.
This might not seem a huge problem, but it is costing me valuable time in rearranging controls dragged to forms and reindexing their tabstop indexes.

Is it possible to change the data source of a dropdown list in a gridview from another dropdown list selected index changed method in the same gridview?
for example I have a dropdown that needs to change its contents depending on what is chosen in the previous cell of the gridview, which is also a dropdown list.

I have a few forms that the user uses to select data records and then perform some analysis on them.So the selected records are presented in a datagrid and each in turn it reviewed and the analysis data added to the extra columns, works very.
However, if the user clicks on a column to sort the grid, the unbound fields are not sorted with it, just blanked out. I can prevent them from sorting, but it would be nice if it could sort the full grid.

In my application,i have a gridview in which columns are created at runtime.Actually these columns are created when i am entering data in a database table.[code]where Column1,Column2,column3 may vary during runtime.i need to enter values to these columns during runtime.But i cant bind these columns because these are created during runtime.The first column "Description" will not change.It will remain constant.For each description, there will be values for each column.At last these data will be saved to the database.How to add columns in the gridview during runtime?

I'm using vb 2005, seems sorting is not working if I change the data by code. For example, if I have a simple form with only one datagridview and one button, grid was sorted on column 1, then I press the button to randomly change data in column 2, then use column 2 to sort, the display order is not correct, but after the button click, if I click on a cell, the grid will re-sort by itself, and get the right list. I know DataGridView is not for Editing data...

Private Sub Form1_Load(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles MyBase.Load
Dim dt As New DataTable

I have a datagridview and all its columns are set to Double Datatype. The problem is when I changed the value of cell and try to sort the column, it shows me an error "Object must be of type Double." I check each cell but all its values are number and I can sort all the columns before I edit one cell. But when I tried to change the value of only one cell and sort the columns, the errors will show. Its weird because I only removed 1 digit of the cell value and I cant sort at all.
Code:
Dim col As New DataGridViewTextBoxColumn
col.ValueType = GetType(Double)

I have a datagridview that is bound to a datatable. When the form is displayed, the column headers have no sort glyphs and the columns will not sort.
I don't see a property on the form that controls column sorting - at least not one that's obvious. This is an area of the code that another developer wrote originally, so maybe there's something going on that I'm not aware of.

gridview sorting in VB.NET: I have a gridview with autogenerate columns = true
<asp:GridView ID="GridView1" FooterStyle-BackColor="Aquamarine"
AutoGenerateColumns="true" AllowSorting="true" OnSorting="Gridview1_Sorting"
AllowPaging="True" PageSize="12" OnRowCreated="GridView1_RowCreated"[code].....
I've declared the sort event handler (OnSorting="Gridview1_Sorting" ), and it works fine.However, then I change the column title (headers as they are in the dataset which I get from the database)
GridView1.HeaderRow.Cells(0).Text = "Document" ' "PROC_UID"
GridView1.HeaderRow.Cells(1).Text = "Process Step" ' "PROC_DOC_UID"
When I set the HeaderRow text, I can no longer click on the title to sort (it also is no longer underlined).How do I correct that?

I have done research on how to manually create sorting in a grid-view and none of it is thorough enough for me to follow. I need more of a step by step solution, like what event should my sorting code go in, how would i enable the headers to allow sorting. normally, i just have .net do this but for some reason this time it doesn't allow it, maybe because i am not using a datasource.that's my code that creates a datable and then binds to the gridview.
Function toptable()
Dim reader As SqlDataReader
cmd.Parameters.AddWithValue("@yeartoget", DropDownList1.SelectedValue)

I have a ListView (GridView) that I want to sort by 2 columns, so if 2+ items have the same value in Column 1, it sorts by Column 2. Pretty easy. But empty strings show up at the top when sorting A-Z. I'd like to move them to the bottom. I made a comparer (IComparer) that takes care of this, but I'm not sure how to use it.[code]...

I have a gridview that displays a calculated field, based on a db source field it populates with.
can i sort by it? i can't seem to figure out how to do it?
example:
my templatefield looks like this:
<asp:TemplateField HeaderText="Category" SortExpression="category" >
<ItemTemplate>
<asp:Label runat="server" Text='<%# BuildCategory(DataBinder.Eval(Container, "DataItem.category")) %>'
ID="lblPrice"></asp:Label>
</ItemTemplate>
</asp:TemplateField>
where category is party of the datasource, but what gets displayed is a calculated value - which is different from the category.what can i put in the "SOrtExpression" to make it sort by the new value - taht gets displayed?

currently I was able to Sort GridView and it is having several page. what my brilliant boss want is to SORT the records per page... as in per page... (ex. page 3 of the gridview contains 50 records of data (G-J), she want to sort the 3rd page for the records to become (J-G) just for the 3rd page...)

I've followed examples here and here to create a generic sort with memberexpressions, but how I'm supposed to add a "ThenBy" clause, or combine multiple columns for sorting in the methodcallexpression. Ideally, the ThenBy should go before skip, but it can't because it can't see the orderby clause that I made with the methodcallexpression. GridSortExpression is a Telerik class - it just describes which column and direction the query should be sorted.
Here is what I have right now:
Dim exp As Expressions.Expression(Of Func(Of Product_Catalog, Boolean)) = PredicateBuilder.True(Of Product_Catalog)()
exp = exp.And(Function(e) e.Chapter_Price > 30)
Dim sortExpression As New List(Of GridSortExpression)({New GridSortExpression() With {.SortOrder = GridSortOrder.Descending, .FieldName = "Id"}})

I refreshed my data sources to include additional items from the SQL Server databases and it appears that my entire data source from my VB.NET project disappeared.I am using Entity Framework. I may have clicked on something wrong, not quite sure. Unfortunately I can't recreate the Data Source without creating a new Entity and Data Model.I can delete the entry in the App.Config file and recreated it, however things aren't quite right.Is there a way that I can recreate my Data Source from the entry that is in my App.Config file...since that appears to have remained intact.BTW, I can go to my Data Model and successfully refresh from there, however my project isn't connecting to the database so I have quite a number of errors until I can get reconnected.

I have ASP gridview bound to an Entity Data source which works no problem, however when I try to programmatically change a header columns text, it appears to break the styling and will not allow sorting either, below is how I am trapping and changing the Header row column text.
Protected Sub gv1_RowDataBound(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.Web.UI.WebControls.GridViewRowEventArgs) Handles gv1.RowDataBound
If e.Row.RowType = DataControlRowType.Header Then
'retrieve the values from the userdeftable
e.Row.Cells(6).Text = App.Session.Company.UserDef3
End If
End Sub
