Asp.net - Ways To Reduce Application Building/debugging Time?

Oct 2, 2010

My new office project is based on an MVP design and is in VB.NET (.NET 3.5), using multiple libraries (like EntLib, internal corporate framework, etc.). The number of DLLs used as references is so huge (almost 50) that when I try to build/debug the application in VS2008, it takes almost 3-4 minutes to get the website running successfully.

Wanted to know if there are any settings/areas which upon some modifications can help me reduce the build time? and what exactly can be the major reasons behind this long loading duration?

is there a way to force the application to use more cpu to reduce the calculation time?

Need To Reduce An Amount Of Time By X%

Sep 7, 2009

i need to reduce an amount of time by x% this is what i have so far [code] as u can see ive taken the hours minutes seconds from the time and stored each in a seperate variable so from 02:30:00 i then divided the hours by 60 and then 60 again to give me the total seconds in the hours and then divided the minutes by 60. i then added all 3 to give the total amount of seconds so now the buildtimetotal variable now holds the total in seconds i now need to reducce this by x% all vars are dimentioned as integers except for buildtimehoursback which is a double the problem seems to be when i try to convert the total seconds back to hours minutes seconds.

Application Config Suggested Ways Pro And Cons

Apr 6, 2012

I have a general question on app.config, or the best way to NOT hard code a SmtpServer.Host = XXXXXXXX setting. I wrote this very simple SMTP texting application and wanted to have the settings not hard code but a form that read or writes to app.config or .ini or registry. my question is the pros and cons? and if anyone hae suggested or a link to sample project that is doing what I'm after. I have a single .exe and am new to vb.net and either want the exe to check for app.config, ini or registry if does not exist to create and then save added config, if the exe runs again it uses the newly created settings.

How To Reduce The Size Of An Application

Feb 23, 2009

I have a system in VB.Net 2003, and that system takes a very long time to load. From the minute I click on the EXE, it takes one minute before the log in screen appear (P4 with 1GB RAM, no other application running). The size of the EXE is 33.2MB. I think the problem is the way I code the program, 1) I declare all the form as obj when I first load the system and I've got over a hundred forms. I try to load them as I need them but it does not work cause forms with sub form would give me an error. 2) I am using dataset as we know dataset is not very efficient but I don't know how else to connect to the database. Is there anything like ADODB in VB6?

Creating A New Random Generator Each Time Should Reduce The Number Of Random Repetitions?

May 26, 2011

I've read numerous posts and threads about random number generation, but I havent' run across this.If I generate a bunch of random numbers, the results are radically different if I create a new Random generator for each number than if I use on Random generator for all the numbers. The results are much more consistent and evenly distributed if I use the same Random generator.I would have thought the opposite, because creating a new Random generator each time should reduce the number of random repetitions, if a different time slice is used to create the random number.[code]......

Asp.net - Debugging Dll In Web Application?

Sep 3, 2010

I have a vb.net web application in visual web developer 2008 with a dll file and i need to debug a method in that dll. I also have project source files for the dll file itself. How could i make the web application use the source instead of the dll file so that i'd be able to debug it? I've tried debugging the dll project itself, but it's not a very good solution, because it seems the dll depends on the web application settings and data and it would simply be too much work to get it working. Building An Application Which Uses Multiple Screens?

Jan 12, 2012

In the very near future I'll have to develop an application that uses multiple screens.

So I'll give you a practical example:

I have 4 screens where different pricing infomation is being displayed. At any given time, I have to show a Promotion which is a single image that needs to be displayed across all of the screens with text scrolling across the screens.

Now I'm wondering what the best way would be to achieve this.

At first I was thinking of using one form and to stretch it across 4 screens, while I create 4 'areas' on the form that represent a screen. However when you extend a form this big I'm afraid the text is going to look horrible.

Then I was thinking of using 4 forms and split up the image into 4 different images which are displayed on the different screens. However to get a scrolling text right on 4 different forms, that's going to take some trial and error.

how I can achieve this form of digital signage?

I want to use VB.Net unless this would seem impossible and I have to use other software?

Building An Application With VB 2005 With Sql Server?

Sep 23, 2009

I am building an application with VB 2005 with sql server. I am using a listbox to populate items from the database. The listbox Sorted property has been set to True and also the query uses order by clause on the Name field. The items in the listbox look like

Bean
Began
Cat
Category
Detail
Delta

MY problem is when the user tries to select an item, say Detail, having focus on the listbox, when pressing the keys D the item Detail selects but on next key e, it goes on to the Item starting with E. (in vb6 listbox property Sorted = true would solve this problem, which i am not getting with vb 2005/2008)

So, how can i achieve the multiple keypress on the listbox (without using any textbox to select items) to select the typed items in the list.

Building The Application For A Pc In A Students Home With About 10 Users?

Jul 15, 2010

I want to build an application that checks every second for certain windows and then react according to that.

My Goal:I'm building the application for a pc in a Students Home with about 10 users. To create 10 different user accounts for windows will be annoying and crowded, because new people come in every year(or couple of months) and then old accounts have to be deleted and new ones created.

I want to build an application that accepts folderPaths or window names.Lets say user1 creates a folder with the name "Susan" that she wants to protect (her personal files/picture/work will be stored there. She opens the application, selects the folder. The application saves the folder path and her password that she enters.

If the application detects that a user is trying to open/move/delete/copy/whatever that folder, the app must pop up a password box. Correct password gives her the freedom she wants, wrong password just ignores the open/move/delete/copy/whatever command.

.net - Debugging ClickOnce Deployed Application

Nov 9, 2010

I am new to ClickOnce deployment and at first glance it seems a great way to maintain .Net applications updated with ease. I am developing a simple application that stores information on a mdb database and over some XML files. I understood how to use the "data" folder with ClickOnce and I am developing the part of my application that should migrate the data from older versions after a ClickOnce update. Now I need to debug that part of my code that only runs when the application is in "networkDeployed" mode. So actually I'm doing the following really slow process to test a new deployed version:

publishing the application on a provisional website (I can choose between a faster locale iis site or a real online one) installing the application from the deploying website (the first time) or running the old installed application so it automatically catch new updates and gets updated... running the application

So basically I have two problems here:

the whole process is much too slow :/ I'm running the app as every other app directly from the OS, so I can't access to the debugger...

I am pretty sure that there are better way to test ClickOnce deployed applications...

Debugging Windows Service Application

Sep 1, 2011

I have created and deployed a windows service application and I added this line of code "System.Diagnostics.Debugger.Launch()" in the beginning of OnStart method in order to be able to debug the service but when I start the service the nothing is happened. I think the OnStart method have never fired otherwise the visual studio will popup once the debugger.launch line is executed even I tried to write some text to the event viewer to make sure but nothing gets written to the events viewer after I started the service. I included also the debugging symbol in my windows service setup project but I end up with the same result. Why it's not working? How can I make sure that the OnStart method gets fired or not?

Debugging C# Silverlight Projects From Vb Web Application?

Nov 12, 2009

I have a problem whereby I cannot debug a c# silverlight application project that is hosted from within a visual basic web application. I add breakpoints to the main App constructor and the symbols are loaded ok but my breakpoints are never hit. I have concluded that it is a vb/c# interop problem as to test i did the following.

Created a new c# web application project
Added a c# silverlight application
Added a new vb web application project
Added references to the silverlight project from both web apps
set a breakpoint in App.xaml.cs constructor

if i run the c# webapp the break points are hit whereas if i run the vb webapp they are not.

I've gone terribly wrong somewhere in that my cars only race halfway then get stuck behind the start line and the programme keeps repeating the beeping and the messsagebox.show and adding results to the 'incorrect' box.

The only way to terminate the application is to hit 'stop debugging'.

Option Strict On
