Both Text1 And Check1 Are Members Of A Control Array?
Mar 29, 2010
In VB6 I can do things like this:For x = 0 to 99 if Text1.text(x) = "yes" then Check1(x).value = checked
Next x Here, both Text1 and Check1 are members of a control array. Is there an equivalent methodology I can use in vb.net?

I am trying to deserialize a JSON string that looks like so: {'type':'clientlist','client_list':[]} I am using JavaScriptSerializer() to do it. For some reason the JavaScriptSerializer() is choking on the member 'client_list'. It doesn't give very good info. The error it gives is:

I have a number of arrays (lets say two for the time being, but this needs to be scalable from 1-n). Each array represents a different "parameter" for the application I'm working on. I need to create a multidimensional array containing a set which represents each of the permutations of each of the "parameters". Effectively each row represents each permutation of the selected options for each "parameter" array.
For instance, say the first array of inputs is:
"Blue"
"White"
"Yellow"
And the second:
1
66
95
I need to create an array:
"Blue", 1
"Blue", 66
"Blue", 95
"White", 1
"White", 66
"White", 95
"Yellow", 1
"Yellow", 66
"Yellow", 95
The main work is in the "If Not (OutputTemp Is Nothing)" loop. Effectively I need to access the content in the first array with a "modulus" so that: (using the example above). I'm accessing the rows in the following method
OldArr,NewArr
11
12
13
21
22
23
31
32
33
worked it out.
Here is the code.
Public Class Permutation
Public TitlePrimary As String
Public TitleSecondary As String
Public Order As Integer = 0
Public Values() As Object

Private Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click
Dim newLines = (From line In RichTextBox1.Lines _
Let parts = line.Split(","c) _
Where parts.Length = 4 _
[code]....
but in this code knows how many splits are, and I dont't know how many will by in my settings. How to solve this problem? and how to select parts.

Why does it take too much time in vb.net for same work?Code is given below, here Led is the label control array.
For l = 1 To 3000
Led.Load(ledCounter)
ColLed.Add(Led(ledCounter))

The situation is like this, says:I have textbox1 to textbox20 to show real-time reading, then textbox21 to textbox40 for other purpose. So textbox1-20 can be manage in group through: For index As Integer = 1 To 20 Form1.Controls("Textbox" & index).BackColor = SystemColors.Window Next The problem is, after some time i feel i like to change the order or add/delete few textbox, then i need to change the control name one by one by entering the name by hands(says if i add a text box then its name will be textbox41, then then For loop wont work, Or I deicided to delete the textbox15, forloop wont work either, then i need to rename them manually.)
Question: If there a ways that create a control array in VB 2008 express edition? which can set the name of Textbox1-20 to ButtonGroup then refer to them by says Buttongroup(1) for textbox1? (which means set a group of control in one name)

I have an array of picture boxes as so:
Dim pieces(500) As PictureBox
pieces(1) = New PictureBox
With pieces(1)
[Code].....
The program does not crash or anything, but the picturebox is no where to be seen on the form. How to I make this work correctly?
And is 'Control Array' the correct term for this? or something else?

I populated a form with several progress bars and added a function to handle a click event via AddHandler. The event fires and I have been able to do things with the control using the passed object 'sender', but I can't for the life of me determine what the index of the control is in the array.
Why is that important to me? Because I want to click the control, have a container of textboxes become visible, and populate them with data from the reference in my database based on what control was clicked, and update that data as needed. Making the container of textboxes visible, and even moving it based on the location of the clicked control in the array are all done and working fine. I just can't seem to get the index of the control.
I need to know what entry (progress bar in this case) was clicked. In the function, I can even do things with a select progress bar using something like pb(x).value = some integer, but I'm trying to find out what 'X" is when the click event fires.
Here are some code snippets...
'Populate page 0 of tab control with progress bars
'TimerCount(int) = number of timer instances active in the database
For x = 0 To TimerCount
[code]....
EDIT: I figured out a work around using the 'name' property, but I would still like to know if what I asked about an index is possible.

I have an application with as many as 625 Textboxes in a runtime generated control array.I add textboxes one at a time in a subroutine. The application ran with no problems until the parameters required more than 256 textboxes at which point it slowed drastically as textboxes were added. At circa 400 Textboxes it died with an out-of-memory condiiton.
The system has 8GB & a 64Bit version of Windows 7.It looks like the tooltips are eating up memory, causing excessive use of virtual memory from Hard Disk & finally causing out-of-memory.I am now running the application with a label which flashes when the mouse hovers. This uses the Handler for MouseHover. Is it possible to get a single Tooltip to function for all the Controls in an Array? I would prefer this to using the Event Handler.

I migrate between C++ and VB.NET in my coding ventures... which leads to the occasional confusion about when something is by value or by reference in VB.NET.Let's say for example that I have an array of MyObject which is populated with a bunch of objects.
dim MyArr(5000) of MyObject. let's say that the information from this array travels throughout various data structures:
dim MyList as new List(of MyObject)
for i as integer = 0 to 5000 step 1000
Mylist.add(MyArr(i))
next
Under the above scenario, I believe everything is by reference. If I extract an entry from "MyTable" and modify its MyObject Members, I think that the original in MyArr will be modified. However, I have run into situations where I thought something was by reference, and it was by value. Are items always added to containers by reference, or are they sometimes added by value?

I'm having some headaches using Structures and functions that return Nothing in VB.NET. [Code] In the previous code, when I return Nothing as result of Foo function I'd expect that st is Nothing. But this is not what happens. Then I found in MSDN documentation: Assigning Nothing to a variable sets it to the default value for its declared type. If that type contains variable members, they are all set to their default values.
So I discovered that when I assign Nothing to a structure, all its members are set to their default values, instead of the structure itself.
Also, I tried to make st a Nullable type by declaring: Dim st As Nullable(Of Test) = Foo()
but, still I can't check if st is Nothing by using: If st Is Nothing Then
or If st.Equals(Nothing) Then
So, questions:
1 - Is it possible to assign Nothing to the structure and not to its members?
2 - How can I check if a return structure value is Nothing?

According to a mspress book (MCTS for Exam 70-536 .NET 2.0): You might have version compatibility issues if you ever attempt to deserialize an object that has been serialized by an earlier version of your application. Specifically, if you add a member to a custom class and attempt to deserialize an object that lacks that member, the runtime will throw an exception. In other words, if you add a member to a class in version 3.1 of your application, it will not be able to deserialize an object created by version 3.0 of your application.
Now... As curious as I am I went and created a project, serialized a class, added a new member and attempted to deserialize the class to the new object. To my surprise it worked and the newly created member was set to null by default (even if it had another default value).

I have an EggSac object which contains references to >100 000 Egg objects. Some variables in the Eggs have to be maintained to be consistent with EggSac, so I want to make these only changeable by EggSac. However EggSac passes references to its Eggs all over the application, so if I use public methods then any other code could modify the secure parts of the Eggs by accident.
What's a proper OO way to make sure only the EggSac object can call the "secure" methods of the Eggs, but still make the "safe" methods available to everyone?
My idea is to split Egg's class into a base class containing only safe methods and a derived class containing the secure methods that only EggSac should have access to. Then EggSac has members of the type of the derived class, but it casts them to their base class whenever something else wants one.
