When declaring a byte array, what is the difference between the following? Is there one, or are these just two different ways of going about the same thing?

I've been up for nearly 24 hours now. Trying to program an application for a game I have been playing.I've run in to a problem, I'm not sure how to solve.I have basic knowledge when it comes to VB (college class) so bare with me.[code]My only Idea would be loops to figure out where each of the edited numbers are in the array, But I was looking for something simple.Also, would it be easier to work with the bytes rather than edit them in string form?

I have a StringArray that is filled with line of text and I need to take each array of strings and convert them to byte. How
Dim splitText() As String = TextRead.Split(Chr(13))
Dim byteArray() as string = Byte.Parse(splitText(0))
once I can get one element of the string array to convert to Byte I will put a loop around it for each position in the string array but it says the string format is not correct for the byte.parser.

I am transmitting data over an IP socket and receiving the data via a second program I have written. The server was in VB6 and am now creating a new one in vb.net to run as a service. The major issue I am having is related to the encoding features.
Issue 1 to be able to correctly encode a bytearray so that when it is received by a VB6 program via winsock that the data will be in the proper ANSI format for the pc to read it correctly. So far this works on some files and not on others depending on the content of the file.
Issue 2 to be able to correctly encode a bytearray, send it to a vb.net host program and correctly [decode?] write it to disk.
To make things a little more complicated I must also be able to do this where the client resides on a Windows Mobile, Windows CE, or Windows PC. I have been running some tests and have gotten mixed results.

I just converted the following code from c# to vb.net. It is functional and works correctly with my company's firmware/devices. My next challenge. Previous serialport code used much more readable structs which where then converted (after building a packet) into byte() automatically as part of the serialport encoding. (this is my understanding)How could I
1. morph byte arrays 'ToSocket' and 'ToMTP' below into structs and
2. convert into byte array for Socket.BeginSend(byte(),.....) to stream out to remote devices?

Is it possible in VB to truncate a larger data type ( an int with a value greater than 255) to a smaller one, say a Byte (which only goes up to 255) in a way such that the 8LSBs of the integer are copied to the newly created byte. I have tried this using CType with the following code, however it does not work.
Dim TestByte As Byte = CType(Test, Byte)
Where the variable "Test" is an integer with a value of 419. This code always results in the Overflow exception.

I have a byte array that I convert into a string like so Dim byt As Byte() = New Byte(255) {} s = New String(Encoding.ASCII.GetChars(byte))My question is when I look at the string in a debuger its clearly a normal string but when I compare it to what I know its supposed to be it doesnt equal. So i did a quick check and for some reason its return a string thats the length of 256 characters. So i did a s.trim and it still is 256 characters long.

I would like to know how to convert a unisgned byte to signed byte
Atm I got this
a
Function readSignedByte() As SByte
'-128/127
Dim b As SByte
[Code]....
it doesn't work one that well works for numbers positive over 127 if lets say ReadByte() has 128 it would give overflow error which I don't want it to give I would like it to overflow the number to negivate value aka its signed value.

I'm working with this new API that returns some XML. The problem is that the developer has chosen to indent his returned XML and it's driving me nuts. So, I thought I'd just trim it and then use it that way. But it's not working. here is what I'm getting back from the API:
<response>
<result>success</result>
<session_guid>33434343556</session_guid>
</response>
The code, of course, comes back in a StreamReader object called reader. So my plan is to write the UNTABBED XML to a text file. I thought this would work:
dim output as String = reader.ReadToEnd()
dim xml as String
'open the file in a try/catch statment. Won't include that here
....
....
'Now, we're going to remove whitespace using String.Trim() and write it to a file:
xml = output.Trim()
Then I close the file and move on. The problem is that the String.Trim command isn't working! When I open the file, the indentations ARE STILL THERE and it's throwing everything off.
