C# - Effectively Disable Sort() Within A CompareTo() Override?

Mar 9, 2010

The CompareTo() method for my class is dynamic, and can range from a simple comparison to comparisons on a number of columns. This is all determined at run time, and it works great. But in some cases, I want any attempt to sort a collection of my objects using the default comparison to just do nothing.

Having CompareTo() just return a 0 for any comparison, to my surprise, doesn't work. The list gets rearranged in some odd, seemingly-random order. Is there a way to do this in the CompareTo() method implementation? I'd rather not handle this up at the collection level by having to override Sort().

Overriding CompareTo When There Are Multiple Ways To Compare Two Objects Of The Same Type?

Jan 12, 2011

What's a sound approach to override the CompareTo() method in a custom class with multiple approaches to comparing the data contained in the class? I'm attempting to implement IComparable(Of T) just so I have a few of the baseline interfaces implemented. Not planning on doing any sorting yet, but this will save me down the road if I need to.

Reading MSDN states mostly that we have to return 0 if the objects are equal, -1 if obj1 is less than obj2, or 1 is obj1 is greater than obj2. But that's rather simplistic.

Consider an IPv4 address (which is what I'm implementing in my class). There's two main numbers to consider -- the IP address itself, and the CIDR. An IPv4 address by itself is assumed to have a CIDR of /32, so in that case, in a CompareTo method, I can just compare the addresses directly to determine if one is greater or less than the other. But when the CIDR's are different, then things get tricky.

Assume obj1 is 10.0.0.0/8 and obj2 is 192.168.75.0/24. I could compare these two addresses a number of ways. I could just ignore the CIDR, and still regard as obj2 as being greater than obj1. I could compare them based on their CIDR, which would be comparing the size of the network (and a /8 will trump a /24 quite easily). I could compare them on both their numerical address AND their CIDR, on the off chance obj2 was actually an address inside the network defined by obj1.

What's the kind of approach used to handle situations like this? Can I define two CompareTo methods, overloaded, such that one would evaluate one address relative to another address, and the second would evaluate the size of the overall network? How would the .NET framework be told which one to use depending on how one might want to sort an array? Or do some other function that relies on CompareTo()?

Crystal Reports : Get Effectively A Subreport Within A Subreport?

Jan 30, 2010

I'm using Crystal Reports within VB.NET and Visual Studio 2005.I have a report with several subreports. I'm setting List(Of MainStuff) as the data sources for the main report. I'm setting List(Of SubreportStuff) as the data source for the subreport. Each SubreportStuff has a key which links back to a particular MainStuff, so the report groups each MainStuff item with its related SubreportStuff items. (Or, at the DB level, SubreportStuff items have a foreign key, which is the primary key in MainStuff.)

Below shows the Load function for the dialog, which contains a CrystalReportsViewer. In the Crystal Reports report editor (within VS 2005) I set the subreport link to pull only the related items into that part of the report.

Imports System.Windows.Forms
Public Class dlgMyReport
Private rpt As New MyReport
Public theMainList As New List(Of MainStuff)

[code]....

This works fine. Now, though, what I'm needing to do is in essence the same thing, but pull items based on the keys in the subreport items. This would mean having a subreport within a subreport. However, it doesn't appear that I can do this (the option for inserting a subreport is grayed out when I try to insert in something that is already a subreport).

Array.Sort(array) - Specify A Numeral Sort Based On The First Character In The String?

Jan 29, 2009

Sub Sort()
ReDim RollsCC(NumOfPlayers - 1)
For N As Integer = 0 To (NumOfPlayers - 1)[code]....

Here I am creating a temp single dimensional array, merging my 2d array into it, and then attempting to sort it by Rolls(N,1), which is a integer 1-6, Everything seems to be working right with the exception of this.

RollsCC.Sort(RollsCC, 0, 1)

How would one specify a numeral sort based on the first character in the string? im aware that I am switching Rolls(n,1) and Rolls(n,0) information during the sort.

.net - Why Is Date1.CompareTo(Date2) > 0 Faster Than Date1 > Date2

Aug 6, 2010

Unimportant because mostly code-readability is much more important than a few milliseconds, but interesting anyway.I noticed that there are differences between different DateTime Comparisons.I checked 3 alternatives:

Dim clock As New System.Diagnostics.Stopwatch
Dim t1, t2, t3 As Long
Dim Date1 As Date = Date.Now.AddSeconds(2), Date2 As Date = Date.Now

[code]....

Normally i choose first method because it is more readable and fail-safer than the others.Method 3 is the fastest. Is this the method that the compiler would choose when i use the operator overloaded method 1? When yes, why are there differences during runtime?Method 2 is the slowest, maybe because it is shared/static?!UPDATE: added some more values. Now Metod 1 and 2 are pretty equal fast.
