Asp.net - Linq To Sql Convert To Generic List In .NET?

Jul 2, 2009

I am trying to learn some VB.NET for my coo-op that starts next week, and for that reason i took my portfolio web site that is on C# and just started to converting it to VB.NET to get familiar with the syntax.

I am sure my problem is simple however i have a hard time solving it. I am trying to grab data with the linq query and then return it as list to bind to the Repeater.I have the following function:

[Code]...

And it would work fine. However if I try to use ToList() in VB.NET i am getting error that it cannot convert it from ling to sql List to the generic list. How do i do this convertion in VB.NET ? or maybe there is another way ?

I am decent when it comes to C# however somewhat lost with the VB.NET syntax.

I have a Dataset that already contains all the data from the PPM_TRANSFER_EMAIL table so it seems silly to query the database again when I can use LINQ to query the dataset.

Use LINQ Query To Convert DBNull To String?

Oct 12, 2009

I've created a small WPF app in VB9 to catalog our sizable DVD collection. This exercise has been more about learn programming than the need to have a movie database app, but I digress. The SQL database I created has a field for "Genre" that does not have an entry for all the movies in our collection. As such, when I run the method that filters the movie listing by "Genre" the compiler throws the "StrongTypingException was unhandled" error stating "The value for column 'Genre' in table 'Movies' is DBNull.".

I now understand where the DBNull problem comes from and have been searching for several hours to find a VB solution that converts the DBNull fields to strings on the fly during the LINQ query. I've found many solutions people have tried but, since I'm quite new to all this, none of them have worked for me. Pasted below is the method that throws the exception.

Using LINQ To SQL With Views Need To Cast / Convert To Table

Jun 25, 2012

My SQL Server database contains several views which are essentially filtered (WHERE) / ordered (ORDER BY) versions of some of the tables i.e. no joins.

An example would be my Downloads table, which has a view such as DownloadsOnlineOnly e.g.

SELECT * FROM Downloads WHERE Live = 1 ORDER BY FolderName ASC;

I can drag and drop these views onto my LINQ to SQL DataContext, and use LINQ to query these views and retrieve data fine...

But the foreign key relationships are not being picked up in my DataContext, so I've lost the ability to:

Dim dl as DownloadOnlineOnly = (From r in db.DownloadOnlineOnlies Select r).First

Dim fol as Folder = dl.Folder ' Syntax error as there is no association between

' DownloadOnlineOnly and Folder in my DataContext.

I understand why this is happening, but how can I get around this:

Without manually adding associations in my DataContext? Can I change the type of the Entity like changing the return type of an SP on the DataContext? Can I cast or convert between a DownloadOnlineOnly object and Download object? Or some other method?

VS 2008 Convert A String Into A Linq Query?

May 20, 2012

Is there a way to convert a string into a linq query? Searching for those words brings up tons of stuff unrelated to what I'm trying to do..For instance, this works, of course...

Dim lstMyQuery = (From item in htMyTable.values where item(0) = "Apple" Select item)

But somehow I want to do this:

Dim strQuery = "From item in htMyTable.values where item(0) = " & CHR(34) & "Apples" & CHR(34) & " Select item"
Dim lstMyQuery = (Somehow run/convert strQuery as a query)

The reason is strQuery will be different each time depending on what the user has selected earlier in the program.R if lstMyQuery is already a collection, is there a way to add to it?

Dim lstMyQuery = (From item in htMyTable.values where item(0) = "Apples" Select item)

(this obviously doesn't work, but it's basically what I want to do...)

lstMyQuery.Add(From item in htMyTable.values where item(0) = "Oranges" Select item)
