Aug 2, 2010
I wanted to give my user an option for "Start with Windows". When user check this option it will place a shortcut icon into Startup folder (not in registry). On Windows restart, it will load my app automatically.

How would I create a shortcut of my exe file when its run, I can work out the directories and stuff but how would I actually create the program that it starts when windows boots?
I have done quite a few google searches and have found nothing to interesting or useful but I did find out that there is two main ways of doing this registry or startup folder and im more pulled into the startup folder because I dont think that I yet know enough about controlling the registry to be confident of using code like that, so I fall to my other alternative using the startup folder to trigger my program, I read somewhere that this doessn not work for vista but im not sure of that. What I would like to as is how you actually create a shortcut as I cant really understand VB6 Code very well its all I could find.

i want the program to run on startup using the startup folder, NOT the registry.i cannot find anything on the startup folder.whenever people ask about the startup folder, all the replies are about the registry. i am beginning to think that the startup folder is some kind of government secret.

I have a vb.net 2008 application that is supposed to run at startup. After meeting certain conditions, the PC is supposed to restart. Below is the code that is failing:
System.Diagnostics.Process.Start("shutdown", "-r -t 00 -f", myUsername, myPassword, myDomain)
myUsername and myDomain are both strings while myPassword is a SecureString. The application works properly when execute manually, but give the following error when executed from startup (either by placing in the startup folder or by adding to the registry):
The directory name is invalid
Also, the program executes properly when the last 3 arguments are left out and the user has the necessary rights.
How do I force a restart using an specific, alternate user credentials on startup?

I'm converting a user generated list box to an array and then generating a user defined number of random strings and placing it in a textbox. The code I have works fine as it will generate the number of random strings the user wants, except sometimes a line is blank at the top of the list but is counted as a string.

I need to get the user input for where they want the files that will be produced by my windows service to be stored.
I was thinking that i could do this by reading in the user's input to a variable in the on start event of my service? this variable is then later used in my xml writer.

I am a beginner using 2008 Express and I am trying to get my application to remember and restore some combobox values. It seems to work fine if the application is opened and closed normally but for some reason it loses the settings if it is opened from the startup folder.
Here is how the startup link is formed:
Dim shortcutFile As String = Environment.GetFolderPath(Environment.SpecialFolder.Startup) & "FBNav.lnk"
If Not IO.File.Exists(shortcutFile) Then

I can hide my startup form (or make it appear hidden) on startup. I can start my app on windows startup--through registry values--if the user checks a checkbox.
But if the app starts up on windows startup, I want the form to be hidden, so the program can just keep working without bothering anyone. If it starts up because the user started it, I want the form to be showing, because the user probably wants to change some settings or something.

I have a Windows Service that needs to start other processes under a user context other than that used by the service. I've seen other posts related to this but have seen no resolutionI've tried many things and have been unsuccessful in starting the process from a Windows Service when a username, password is supplied. orking as it's a requirement of our system to do this and it worked fine until recently and only fails on Vista and Windows 7 (works on XP).
The following code is used to start the process.
Dim P As New Process
P.StartInfo.Domain = Domain

I know similar questions have been asked/answered, but after looking across the net for 2 days I still haven't really seen an answer to the following question.rst, background info: My application starts at windows start as a user checkbox option (by using the run key in the registry.) I don't know if it is usual or not, but when the app auto starts on windows start, no saved user settings show up on the form (but they do when starting the program manually after windows is already running). I've tried both HKEY_CURRENT_USER and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE. In case anyone needs or wants it, my code for accessing the registry is:
Dim Reg As Object
Reg = CreateObject("Wscript.shell")
Reg.RegWrite("HKEY_CURRENT_USERSOFTWAREMICROSOFTWINDOWSCURRENTVERSIONRUN" &

I have made my application to start automaticly when windows start (registry ../currentversion/run/appname + path). In this mode the application start minimized and an little icon appear in the notification icon area. With this icon you can maximize the app or exit it.If you exit the app and start it again using the Menu (Start/programs etc) than the application start in minimized mode (and in this case I would like to have it in normal mode) because the setting autostart is still true.Is there a way you can detect when the application start when windows startup using the above registry or when people click on an icon in the programs menu (or desktop)?

I'm new at the forums but not to .net development. I'm trying to make an application, which stays above the Dektop level but ALWAYS below any opened window. This application cannot be minimized, it has to be visible as a desktop background (just for getting you the main idea). As I was reading, I found that the way to make the form not to minimize is by using the WndProc function, and intercepting the Minimize message. My question is.. which of all the available messages is the correct for this case?.
P.D.3 (And last one I hope): See, the main reason of this application, is to make some kind of an "Active Desktop" function, which is not supported by Windows XP 64-bit. As XP64 doens't come with Active Desktop to use Web Pages as Desktop backgrounds, my idea is to make an application which loads certain web page and put's it on the desktop background.

I want A application that im going to make in VB.NET to load on Startup. I found a few topics on Windows Service for creating a start up service but then I read that you can't use it to load up a form. So there must be a way to have your program load on a computer when the user turns on or log's in at startup.Thing is, this application is going to be installed on many computers and people wont like having to remember to run it.

i am trying to make my own user authentication system after i log on with the windows authentication. I want the program to automatically start on startup and i want to enable:
NoDeletePrinter : Disables printer deletion
NoAddPrinter : Disables printer adding
NoRun : Removes run from the start menu
NoSetFolders : Removes folders from the Settings option on Start Menu
NoSetTaskbar : Removes taskbar settings
[Code]..
Because i dont want someone else to just delete or tamper with the files that my program made to authenticate me. After i enter my credentials in my program and they are correct i want to disable these. I am using Visual Basic 2010 Express and my computer is Windows 7 64 Bit Home Premium.

I'm running into this one very specific issue:
- I have a VB.Net 2005 Project for which I've created a Setup Project.
- In my Setup Project, I've added a shortcut on my Start Menu, that points to my Application.
- After deploying it, all works great.
- One of my users chooses to *copy* the shortcut from the Start Menu into their Desktop.
- I then create an upgrade for this Application. Again, the deployment works great. They can start my application from the Start menu.
- They double-click on their icon in the Desktop and they get a popup: Title of the message box: Problem with Shortcut Description of the message box: (X) The parameter is incorrect.
The shortcut's Target, is blank ( which I believe is the problem ).I'd love to be able to specify an actual [TARGETDIR]myApp.exe type of string as the shortcut's target in my Setup Project, but I can't do this.Instead I have to point it via UI, to my Target Application ( which I'm assuming is resolved at install-time ). The problem with this is that it appears that the shortcuts get re-evaluated every time you re-install / upgrade the application. Since my previous version is technically not installed anymore, my shortcut gets invalidaded, even though the target path is still the same and I haven't changed my executable's file name.

I'm creating an app, with a splashscreen, loginform (just enter a name) and a mainform. With I use my.settings. Now here comes the issue I run into. The splashscreen should check (onload) if the my.settings.user contains any info, if it does, the mainform should be shown, if not the loginform should be shown. On my app settings I have splashscreen set to the splashscreen and the first form is set to login form.
