Program To Automatically Start On Startup?
Sep 11, 2010i am trying to make my own user authentication system after i log on with the windows authentication. I want the program to automatically start on startup and i want to enable:
NoDeletePrinter : Disables printer deletion
NoAddPrinter : Disables printer adding
NoRun : Removes run from the start menu
NoSetFolders : Removes folders from the Settings option on Start Menu
NoSetTaskbar : Removes taskbar settings

Because i dont want someone else to just delete or tamper with the files that my program made to authenticate me. After i enter my credentials in my program and they are correct i want to disable these. I am using Visual Basic 2010 Express and my computer is Windows 7 64 Bit Home Premium.

May 13, 2011I'm trying to install an app on a windows server that is always on, but I'm running into problems. I've heard that I shouldn't make it a windows service (and would personally rather have a dialog app so I can see progress, etc) so I'm trying to use task scheduler. However, task scheduler keeps trying to close my app prematurely when it should only open it and leave it open.how I could have a dialog app run on startup (and stay running) on my server?

In this mode the application start minimized and an little icon appear in the notification icon area. With this icon you can maximize the app or exit it.If you exit the app and start it again using the Menu (Start/programs etc) than the application start in minimized mode (and in this case I would like to have it in normal mode) because the setting autostart is still true.Is there a way you can detect when the application start when windows startup using the above registry or when people click on an icon in the programs menu (or desktop)?

I found a few topics on Windows Service for creating a start up service but then I read that you can't use it to load up a form. So there must be a way to have your program load on a computer when the user turns on or log's in at startup.Thing is, this application is going to be installed on many computers and people wont like having to remember to run it.

I want application # 1 to start another application (application #2) without Administrator privileges so application #2 is running as a standard user.

1) It is portable and uses some .dlls which must be in the same folder
2) Requires Administrator in order to run
I want my application to run on windows startup. So i created the registry string value and made some tests that gave me the following results:
1) Windows XP -> Runs on startup without any errors
2) Windows 7 Starter -> It simply ignores my application
3) Windows 7 Premium -> The run confirmation box from unknown publisher appeared and when i selected to run, AVG gave a virus warning
4) Windows 8 Consumer Preview -> It simply ignores my application

Oct 9, 2009I'm using VB.Net, and I have a set of data which I have to able to filter through fairly quickly.Basically, the program is like google sugest, but instead of a drop-down menu, I'm using a listbox. When a user enters a word, I compare the word using LINQ and filter those that contain the user's input. The data are all strings of variable length (from 0 to 200 characters, most on 150 character mark), and I have 240,000+ of this strings and counting- all stored in an XML file.
A colleague of mine told me that loading all of that to memory (using VB.Net's XML serializer plus collections of string/objects) is not practical, and would slow the 'startup' time of the program. I haven't finished building the program yet and I'm having second thoughts about continuing this path.
So, my question is: Should I continue with my current approach on the problem (which is load everything to memory on startup), or is there a better way of solving my dilemma?

But if the app starts up on windows startup, I want the form to be hidden, so the program can just keep working without bothering anyone. If it starts up because the user started it, I want the form to be showing, because the user probably wants to change some settings or something.

May 26, 2010I am concerned that I may not be allowing applications to clear out of memory before they close.I normally start a new application with a start-up form and set the application's shutdown mode to "When last form closes".
I have noticed that any application that loads a class does not close when the last Form closes. I have tested this by creating a new project with a single Form and single Class (newly created and empty). When I declare this class in the Form's Load event then the application does not close when the form is unloaded.
