Starting Application At Windows Start
Jun 26, 2008
I've made a windows service for the purpose of creating backup's of certain files and directories automatically each day. The service is installed as automatic (so it starts after win startup) and i have an application which monitors the service through a system tray icon (so right-click on it you can start/stop/pause the service, change settings, etc).

I have made my application to start automaticly when windows start (registry ../currentversion/run/appname + path). In this mode the application start minimized and an little icon appear in the notification icon area. With this icon you can maximize the app or exit it.If you exit the app and start it again using the Menu (Start/programs etc) than the application start in minimized mode (and in this case I would like to have it in normal mode) because the setting autostart is still true.Is there a way you can detect when the application start when windows startup using the above registry or when people click on an icon in the programs menu (or desktop)?

Visual Basic 2010 - Net Framework 4.0 Client
I have an application (application #1) running with Administrator privileges on Windows 7.
I want application # 1 to start another application (application #2) without Administrator privileges so application #2 is running as a standard user.
Is there a way to do this? I have been using Process.Start.

I have two windows applications in the same solution, in different projects. How do I start one from the other? Is it a matter of supplying the expected build path .exe to somewhere, or is there an alternative?

Had this matter on Xp machine and visual studio 2010 ultimate after windows update between december and january: even the simplest windows form program crash on start when starting for debug (inside Ide, F5) unless putting breakpoints on each line of the autogenerated (and marked as "debugger step thorugh") code.(see: [URL]) I was wondering if this matter affects only Xp machines, or if someone with Seven or Vista had same matter.

I have one doubt. I told yesterday that i am new for windows application. I am using web application. In our web application, we can use multiple files and what files we want to run that we give page start up options. But in windows application where is it? I am using two files in single application. I want to change default start up page.

I am concerned that I may not be allowing applications to clear out of memory before they close.I normally start a new application with a start-up form and set the application's shutdown mode to "When last form closes".
I have noticed that any application that loads a class does not close when the last Form closes. I have tested this by creating a new project with a single Form and single Class (newly created and empty). When I declare this class in the Form's Load event then the application does not close when the form is unloaded.
Private Sub Form1_Load(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles MyBase.Load
Dim MyNewClass As New Class1
MyNewClass = Nothing
End Sub
In order to get the application to close I need to add Application.Exit in the Form's FormClosed event.
Private Sub Form1_FormClosed(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.Windows.Forms.FormClosedEventArgs) Handles Me.FormClosed
Me.Dispose()

But the service is stopping but it is not starting event though it start command is used what could be the reason...
sCommandLine = "SC \"&strMachineName&" stop xyzService"

I'm trying to execute a 3rd party application, called from a .cmd batch file, called from a self-hosted WCF service. Like this:
WCF --> .cmd --> 3rd party app
For whatever reason, using the Shell command doesn't work fully. It will call the .cmd file, but the 3rd party app won't kick off (I know the .cmd is firing because I have before/after ECHO statements populating a log file). If I double-click the .cmd file from explorer, the 3rd party app will start just fine. So, I figured, maybe try something besides the Shell command from my WCF service.
So I tried the following code, but it won't kick off the .cmd file at all (echo statements not firing). What am I missing here?
Dim psi As New ProcessStartInfo("cmd.exe", "/C " & System.Configuration.ConfigurationManager.AppSettings("ExStream_CMD_File_Path"))
Dim proc As New Process()
proc.StartInfo = psi
proc.Start()
proc.WaitForExit()
The path in the app.config file is valid (just double-checked). Is there anything wrong with the above code?

I have recently created an application where a lot of data is loaded into objects when the application starts up, and other data as it is required. For example if the user requests the catalogue page then it will load all the top level category data into objects of type Category. This will then stay there to be used by other users (who will therefore not have to load this data into objects) and can be altered by admin if they happen to login during the same application instance. I know this is not the most efficient solution, as pointed out below, but it works and the page load, at the moment, is not too long. It is very quick if most of the required data is already loaded into objects. It is also tailored to the business' needs - unlike other techniques such as Linq-to-SQL.

I am in need of a small application, that will allways be topmost and will send keystrokes to the last active application (typically notepad or an explorer window). My problem is retrieving the current active form (or application), when my application is started up. Every search seems to return old and rather complex solutions using Win32 library functions, but I was kinda hoping, that .Net allowed for a neater and more simple solution.I need a code example or link on how to retrieve the currently active application window from another application just starting up.

I'm using Process.Start to start an external command line application and using the StartInfo.Arguments method to send parameters to the application. I imagine I'll need to use a loop... but I can't figure out exactly how yet.I need to send anywhere from 1 - an infinite number of files names to this application. Each file has to be sent one after the other. So once the first one is done, I need to loop back around and past the second one.I can probably use the Directory.GetFiles method to get all of the files, but I don't know how to assign them.

My app (which runs ok as a standard user) requires updates to be installed, but I don't want to have to input the administrator username/password each time nor do I want to increase user privileges to administrator.
I have a windows service which handles the downloading of updates etc (running as Local System) but the start command needs to come from the main app (running as a standard user). This is not permitted and I get Access Denied.
I understand why this is happening but is there an alternative way to achieve this? I want to handle program updates as the standard user without using ClickOnce or installing to a non Program Files folder.

I've created a Windows Service and installed it via InstallUtil so I can test it out.The installation goes seamlessly, but it will not start from some reason. When I attempt to start it, I get an "Access Denied" error and that's it.
I haven't been able to find any information via the normal channels.I first thought to give the service admin rights, but that didn't work either.

I am trying to create a windows service that sits in the background waiting for programs to be started. When the programs start I want to be able to check a unique bit of information for each program (I believe GUIDs may provide this) to see what the program is. If the program is not allowed, I aim to provide a warning to the user and possibly close the program. The aim of the application is to identify when users are attempting to install additional software on to the computer so simply monitoring for a certain executable wouldn't work as msiexec is called for all MSI's and as I only want to stop blacklisted programs...this wouldn't work.

Basically I've written two Apps (A and B) and all I want to do is put a link on the menu of App A which when clicked will fire-up App B.
Normally what I'd do is something along the lines of...
Shell("C:PathAppName.exe")
However, both of my apps are installed on the target machines via a Setup-Kit generated by the Publish Wizard in VB.NET. As far as I know, after you've run the Setup you don't get an EXE file for the actual application - you just get an 'Application Reference' on the Start Menu and/or Desktop.
My problem is that I don't really understand what the Application Reference is and how my application is actually deployed onto the target machine after setup has finished...
Given that I don't seem to have an EXE file after running Setup, I need another way of telling App A to fire App B, because I'm guessing I can't use my Shell command anymore?

I have a app that is starting up a thread that runs the standard windows defrag utility. It also gives the user the option to cancel the defrag if they want to. Problem is if the thread defrag is running on is canceled is there any data loss or does it just do the last operation and then exit. For example the code goes something like this:
[Code]...
Code works exactly as it should, runs the defrag on a separate thread so my UI remains responsive. I'm just worried about the effect of the cancel on it, when you call a thread abort does the program running in the thread know it's being canceled and "cleanly" close? I don't want to abort a file move operation when it's defraging and end up with a corrupt file.
