When you change some date or time settings in Regions and Languages from Control Panel, Windows will apply and refresh the Notification Area right now. Now i change some date setting from Registry and want Explorer refresh right now, using the API SHChangeNotify, like below

I'm wondering if anyone can point me to any documentation for interacting with the taskbar notification area(system tray)? Note I am not looking to make an application that shows in the taskbar notification area, as I already know how to do this, but rather how to get information and interact with what is already there.

I am having an applciation running in system tray notification area, but the problem is that although I exit the application the icon is still there, when I point my mouse near notification area it's gone as it should be when I clicked on exit. I guess it is because my mouse position makes the area to refresh, if so, how can I do it inside my application to avoid having my useless icon in there?

I'm trying to write a very basic program in VS 2008 (VB.NET 2.0) that will help me to quickly set up new servers. One of the things I want the program to do is hide the "Volume" and "Network" system icons. I cannot find where that setting is or a way to programmically change it.

I'm trying to create a program that when I press the X or _ buttons on the form it minimizes to the notification area(system tray). I did find some stuff but didn't understand were to put the code I just have some basic knowledge in VB.net. What I read was something about the formclosing event
Private Sub frmMain_FormClosing(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.Windows.Forms.FormClosingEventArgs) Handles Me.FormClosing
Me.WindowState = FormWindowState.Minimized
e.Cancel = True
'Me.Visible = False
End Sub
and well it sort of works to what I want but don't know were to go from there.. what I read from another post was that I had to do something with "NotifyIcon Class" but still didn't know what to do with that or where to put the code.
Basically what I want the program to do is minimize to system tray and a tooltip will pop up when I hover my mouse over it and display something that I want. Also when I right click the icon I would like some options to be displayed so that I could program it to close.

Since the coming of Windows7 at our office we have sometimes the issue that the print spool is crashing.Users don't have admin rights to restart the service so that leaves them only at restarting their computer as solution.Which costs alot of time... As we cannot find a final solution to this problem I've begin to write a small tool so they can restart it..I've only hard code a local admin account in the source for this operate for them..

I am creating a windows service that will do things behind the scenes without any GUI needed, thus the need for a Windows Service. The problem is though I would like to notify the user when certain events happen by playing a short audio clip. I know Windows Service's create a virtual Desktop, in which, Audio messages are not sent to the users Desktop.

I really like the MSN notification popup. Basically the popup you see when you receive a new email etc. I'd like to put timers and set times so I, for instance, get a popup at 2PM saying "Don't forget..." I know I could make my own notification bubble but I'd prefer the WLM one.

I have two windows applications in the same solution, in different projects. How do I start one from the other? Is it a matter of supplying the expected build path .exe to somewhere, or is there an alternative?

I've made a windows service for the purpose of creating backup's of certain files and directories automatically each day. The service is installed as automatic (so it starts after win startup) and i have an application which monitors the service through a system tray icon (so right-click on it you can start/stop/pause the service, change settings, etc).

I have an application (chat) that I am developing for our company (special requirements). We are mostly using WinXP computers. I want it to be topmost and docked to the right, the problem is, I don't want it to overlap other windows that people are working on.
Is there a way to change the default area that other programs can maximize to? Basically, I want it to look something like this: Is something like this possible? I'm using VB.net so all .net answers are accepted.

My app (which runs ok as a standard user) requires updates to be installed, but I don't want to have to input the administrator username/password each time nor do I want to increase user privileges to administrator.
I have a windows service which handles the downloading of updates etc (running as Local System) but the start command needs to come from the main app (running as a standard user). This is not permitted and I get Access Denied.
I understand why this is happening but is there an alternative way to achieve this? I want to handle program updates as the standard user without using ClickOnce or installing to a non Program Files folder.

I've created a Windows Service and installed it via InstallUtil so I can test it out.The installation goes seamlessly, but it will not start from some reason. When I attempt to start it, I get an "Access Denied" error and that's it.
I haven't been able to find any information via the normal channels.I first thought to give the service admin rights, but that didn't work either.

I am trying to create a windows service that sits in the background waiting for programs to be started. When the programs start I want to be able to check a unique bit of information for each program (I believe GUIDs may provide this) to see what the program is. If the program is not allowed, I aim to provide a warning to the user and possibly close the program. The aim of the application is to identify when users are attempting to install additional software on to the computer so simply monitoring for a certain executable wouldn't work as msiexec is called for all MSI's and as I only want to stop blacklisted programs...this wouldn't work.

I am experiencing an issue with my copy of Visual Basic 2010 Express. I know my copy will run for about, 22 more days. But even when I try to register my product so it can run forever, a notification pops up always saying the same thing - "This product needs to be re-installed." What does that mean? Is my copy fine with no problem? Or do I not have a .dll file that I need to install? Please, help me so I can register my product.

I have a app that is starting up a thread that runs the standard windows defrag utility. It also gives the user the option to cancel the defrag if they want to. Problem is if the thread defrag is running on is canceled is there any data loss or does it just do the last operation and then exit. For example the code goes something like this:
[Code]...
Code works exactly as it should, runs the defrag on a separate thread so my UI remains responsive. I'm just worried about the effect of the cancel on it, when you call a thread abort does the program running in the thread know it's being canceled and "cleanly" close? I don't want to abort a file move operation when it's defraging and end up with a corrupt file.

I am developing an app that uses a sql backend database (hosted on a different machine).The app I am developing will be run on 10 different workstations simultaneously.Sometimes the app will change the database in such a way that the database needs to initiate a workflow process and I'm not sure of the best way to do this.Also, when database changes happen, how does one best notify the other app instances that the change has happened, so they know to refresh their data? I was thinking that triggers could help initiate the workflow but it might be nice to develop the actual workflow in .net code.Should I write another App to run as a service on the server and do the work and also to tell the client apps when things change?
