Is there a way to catch a database exception and then redirect to an error page? I have a data access class that I use to make a sql connection and then functions that call it to execute my SQL commands. My problem is that if my database is not available I cannot catch that error. Here is the code I am using in my class[code]...
View 3 RepliesMVC3, VB.NET, using EF. I am working on coding up a simple function to handle checking for a valid MySQL connection. If the connection fails the test it will use the secondary server connection. This is required because our hosting provider does not provide failover or redundant MySQL servers. The problem is I tried to use a simple try catch method in the HomeController. This fails early because the Entity Framework is looking the connection that was set up when I set it up... Is there anyway to control that connection dynamically?
View 1 RepliesI am working on a windows application using VB.net 2.0 and want to create a custom ComboboxControl which displays multiple groups. I was able to display the items in Custom combobox with headers. Below is the sample.
Header 1
Item 1_1
Item 1_2
[code]....
I want to prevent users from selecting the header items. I managed to revert back to the previously selected item if user selects the header item. Problem with this approach is drop down collapses and then reverts back to previously selected item. Is there a way to check, if the item being selected is a header item and if it is a header item, do not collapse the dropdown. Basically I want to implement behavior of HTML select list with optgroup.

im trying to write to an sql database. im inserting an image, as well as some other information. I am using the following code which works fine, as long as i do not add an extra column/variable "LOCATION" in to the mix and leave "
'Cmd.Parameters.Add("@LOCATION", OleDb.OleDbType., 3).Value = "testing"
commented out. *this is undesireable as im trying to add extra criteria to be saved like LOCATION.
Try
Dim st As New FileStream("\serverfolder1storage" & "pdftemplate.jpg", FileMode.Open, FileAccess.Read)
Dim mbr As BinaryReader = New BinaryReader(st)
Dim buffer(st.Length) As Byte
[code]....
i am trying to store the location e.g "c:file1.jpg" in the sql db. Can anyone reccomend a solution to this using OLEDB? ideally i need to add approx 4 more variables. e,g
firstname
surname
dob
location
I have a program in VB.Net that receives mails from Outlook, extracts attachments and inserts the attachments into a table through a query. I would like to put the query/queries in a Try/Catch block, but cannot do so as Outlook exceptions cannot be caught, and it gives me an error, and unless I put a very specific exception, I cannot catch it. Is there a workaround?
Edit:
Try
Catch ex As Exception
End Try
Exception is underlined and when I hover on it, it says: "Catch cannot catch type 'Microsoft.Office.Interop.Outlook.Exception' because it is not in 'System.Exception' or a class that inherits from 'System.Exception'". This is affecting all my other code which I'd like to put into a Try/Catch block.
The following code causes a "Warning" that Variable is used before value assigned. How do I restructure this Try/catch to eliminate error on the myreader.close command in the Catch part? Code appears to work fine but I dont like Warnings. [code]

I have made quite a nice and tidy little game. Its based around space invaders and works quite well. however because i have finished my college project almost 2 weeks ahead of the assignments release date, my tutor has asked me to tweak my project and make it better. So far i have added a full main menu to the game and a full splash screen. I would like to add in a section for recorded high scores but have no idea how to attempt this at all.

I need to catch log4net exceptions (its own exceptions not app exceptions logged by it). I wish there's a way of doing it this way: [code] I have this code implemented and there's no errors in compilation but i force log4net to have an error (pointing to a non existing database in the config file) and nothing is threw.I've tried the listener aproach: [code] and it's writing the errors to log4net.txt, the forced ones i mean. This last aproach has a couple of drawbacks: it won't append every error to the file, if the error is the same it doesn't write it, i can't get the listener to write every error to that file, only one (I don't know how to fully configure the trace listener, it might be that). Thus it won't append the date and hour to every line wich is a necesity for me. Finally i can't give structure to it (xml). Even if the listener work i need to use the try/catch aproach, since i'm using ExceptionHandling from Enterprise library to log the errors in my app.
View 1 RepliesI am using VB.NET 2005 to create a Windows forms application. I have a procedure named SendMail that creates an instance of Outlook.Application, to send an email from my application. I found the code on this forum, I think. The procedure works fine, but I can't use error handling with it.I call the procedure from a button click event. I put the procedure call in a try/catch block, and the application won't build, with the following error.

I was wondering, if there is a way to block incoming connections from specific ip adress that tries to connect to computer
I assume that it cant be via windows host files
I have a controller board that is built by us that sends strings to the serial port based on inputs that it receives. The app we are working on seems to be receiving the data fine but it is displaying it in an odd way and I'm sure it is a simple problem I am overlooking. Here is the incoming code so far:
Private Sub SecuritySerialPort_DataReceived(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.IO.Ports.SerialDataReceivedEventArgs) Handles SecuritySerialPort.DataReceived
ReceivedText(SecuritySerialPort.ReadExisting()) 'Automatically called every time a data
[code]....
I am receiving RS-232 data from serialPort1.Readbyte and want to display the incoming data on a textbox on a form. This causes a "...cross thread..." error.

View 8 RepliesSo I made a little program, and when I run it on my computer the Date format displays as DD/MM/YYYY, but when I run it on some other computers it displays as MM/DD/YYYY. Is there anyway to set the default incoming Date format? Or do I just have to be very careful about how I get/set parts of dates?
View 5 Repliesi'm looking for a solution in automating the following which we are currently doing manually each day:We are getting mails overnight from different clients with different subjects. lets call the subjects 'succes' and 'failed' for now.All we do is ad a new column ech day in an excel sheet, and set cells to green (succes) and red (failed). Each client has a row.I want to automate this process by VBA, as I think it's the best solution. The VBA should read the mail in a folder, and look at the subject and from address.
