VS 2008 Compare DataType Conversions
Feb 23, 2012Have been obsessed with DataTypes recently and would like some thoughts, etc. on the following: What's going on is when the BindingSource.PositionChanged Event fires, I capture an Integer relating to another tables Primary Key and then filter that DataTable to select the matching record.
So the focus of the question lies in the first 3 lines in the event. First example creates 2 objects, 2 lines of code. Second example does it all with one line... not sure if it creates only one object or not, seemingly not.. can't tell for sure. Which is "better"? Am I really approaching this from the right angle? Beside y'all here on this forum and Google, I'm self-taught and looking for some validation.

Nov 30, 2011I have a function that will be passed an object that contains MANY variables. These variables all get stored in a database. Later a new object will be passed to my function and most of the time it will be identical. But sometimes one or two variables will be different and I'll have to take various actions based on those changes. Other than looping through every variable and comparing it to every stored version of that variable, how might I do this? Can I some how generate a hash value for an entire object? Since the object will be the same most if the times it is passed to me this would be a quick way to determine that nothing has changed.

Jun 9, 2011I'm trying to compare two variables of type nullable(of boolean) in VB.NET 2010. One of the variables has a value False and the other is Nothing. Now I was expecting the following expression to evaluate to true, but this is not the case:
Dim var1 as nullable(of boolean) = False
Dim var2 as nullable(of boolean)
var2 = Nothing

I have a typed dataset and it has several integers columns that are null in the db. and when I make a call it throws exception.is there anythign wrong with setting it as object in my dataset.. changing the throw exception property to Nothing and passing it to my property as integer?

Similarly I have a control datetimepicker in vb.net I have assigned format property as custom to the control and the CustomFormat property as HH:mm:ss tt so that it can just provide the time. I dont want the date to be in it.
Issue comes when I try to retrieve the value from database I get an error as Converion of type 'Timespan' to type 'Date' is not valid

I want to enter all the data in the form and have that data automatically transferred as a group to the spreadshet in the upper part of the page when I press a button.I know that there's an insert function.I set it up correctly. To reiterate, the calling function does not receive the updated data that is in the variables custid and amt.When debugging, I see the data change in the else section of "if me.invokerequired", but once it returns from the callback the data is missing.[code]

Private Class MyClass
Private var1 as Decimal
Private list1 as List(Of string)[code].....
But I found that after this form is closed, all above variables, var1, list1, list2 still exist in memory. I thought they should be collected by gc since the form is already disposed as I confirmed.
Add: I have monitored half an hour after the form is closed. But these variables are not collected by gc. I have an automatic update procedure on the form which uses above variables.Since the above variables still hold values, the automatic update procedure is always called which causes exception. (One quick fix is to check if form.isDisposed in update procedure. But I do not think this is elegeant. Besides, these variables occupy memory.)

Question 2: I noticed while using, AddressOf _Function_, variables cannot be passed; what would be an efficient solution to this?
Question 3: While using multithreading is it required to invoke before setting variables, or only form properties?
Question 4: While using System.Net.Sockets is it safe/efficient to use Application.DoEvents while waiting for new data; or would be using a Do While loop be fine without DoEvents since the action would be multithreaded? Note: there can be up to 2000-3000 sockets in use at a time.

When I loop through it, I get a value of -1 for my field "Rush" which is a bit datatype. when I pass the sql into the analyzer, I see the value should be a 1 so not sure why it's giving me a -1. Using SmallMoney DataType?
Nov 8, 2010I am converting the database in an application in Visual Basic 2008 from Access 2000 to SQL Server express 2009 R2 database. There are several fields that "SmallMoney" seems the mos appropriate to use. When I try to use the "SmallMoney" datatype in a Parameter, it won't accept it, the datatypes listed when I try to indicate the datatype does not inclue Mone or SmallMoney. It does include "Currency".
However the ere doesn't seem to be a "Currency" data type in Visual Basic. Would I be better of using Double and change the table definitions back to Double as they were in Access?
