Compare Variables False Positivies?
Jan 6, 2012
I created a SRT program in vb6. works great. I thought it would be a good time to port it over to vb2010 for obvious compatibility issues. the following will not work, even though through debug; all the vars are correct - it just wont come up.
' Timer1.Stop() : MsgBox("start: " & CaptionStart & " end: " & CaptionEnd & " smptime: " & WMPTime) : End
If (CaptionStart <= WMPTime) And (WMPTime <= CaptionEnd) Then
txtCaption.Text = Caption
'// HIGHLIGHT IT IN THE LIST
[code]....
in the above its simpler (why I like vb6) and works perfectly. I am most likely "not seeing the forest for the trees" syndrom.

I have a function that will be passed an object that contains MANY variables. These variables all get stored in a database. Later a new object will be passed to my function and most of the time it will be identical. But sometimes one or two variables will be different and I'll have to take various actions based on those changes. Other than looping through every variable and comparing it to every stored version of that variable, how might I do this? Can I some how generate a hash value for an entire object? Since the object will be the same most if the times it is passed to me this would be a quick way to determine that nothing has changed.

I'm trying to compare two variables of type nullable(of boolean) in VB.NET 2010. One of the variables has a value False and the other is Nothing. Now I was expecting the following expression to evaluate to true, but this is not the case:
Dim var1 as nullable(of boolean) = False
Dim var2 as nullable(of boolean)
var2 = Nothing
[Code].....
Why don't I see my MsgBox? How should I compare two nullables (of boolean)?

Last year (2010) I came across a FANTASTIC command that allowed me to take a string of variables with a common delimiter and break it all back out into separate variables (possibly an array) with one statement.
[Code]...
As long as the delimiter was a unique specifiable character, this one-statement command could break it out into elements. my memory and point me in the right direction.

I have code, shown below, that works all except for 1 thing: The variables being passed byRef get passed, but once modified in the else section of the "if me.invokerequired" code of RecordData, the variables are never updated in the calling function. To reiterate, the calling function does not receive the updated data that is in the variables custid and amt.When debugging, I see the data change in the else section of "if me.invokerequired", but once it returns from the callback the data is missing.[code]

I define some global variables of a class as follows:
Private Class MyClass
Private var1 as Decimal
Private list1 as List(Of string)[code].....
But I found that after this form is closed, all above variables, var1, list1, list2 still exist in memory. I thought they should be collected by gc since the form is already disposed as I confirmed.
Add: I have monitored half an hour after the form is closed. But these variables are not collected by gc. I have an automatic update procedure on the form which uses above variables.Since the above variables still hold values, the automatic update procedure is always called which causes exception. (One quick fix is to check if form.isDisposed in update procedure. But I do not think this is elegeant. Besides, these variables occupy memory.)

Does the memory used in declaring variables are reclaimed by the OS when these variables go out of scope?Does the memory used be released by setting thier value to nothing? if not, then how can I force the garbage collector to run or excecute at a certain/desired time..How about in Windows Forms..How can we make sure that the memory used in initializing and showing forms be released if those forms were closed?

Question 1: What is the difference between "Background Worker" and "Worker Pool" as indicated within the MSDN samples provided.
Question 2: I noticed while using, AddressOf _Function_, variables cannot be passed; what would be an efficient solution to this?
Question 3: While using multithreading is it required to invoke before setting variables, or only form properties?
Question 4: While using System.Net.Sockets is it safe/efficient to use Application.DoEvents while waiting for new data; or would be using a Do While loop be fine without DoEvents since the action would be multithreaded? Note: there can be up to 2000-3000 sockets in use at a time.

I wanted to create my own type that acts like the Boolean type, except I wanted to use Yes and No instead of True and False.I kind of got close but it wasnt exactly what i was going for here's what i have:
[code]...
so i have to use an integer when i dim it like:dim b as MyBool = 1 then when you look at it in the watch window b = {Yes} so i could settle for that, but with a boolean you can do this:dim b as Boolean without setting it to anything it defaults to False mine however, is Nothing. 2 things: 1. How can i get mine to default to No 2. How can i make it work like this: dim b as MyBool = Yes instead of having to use the integer this is not a requirement for anything I just wanted to know how to do it

I am converting an application I created using webforms to the asp.net mvc framework using vb.net. I have a problem with one of my views. I get the yellow screen of death saying "A potentially dangerous Request.Form value was detected from the client" when I submit my form. I am using tinymce as my RTE. I have set on the view itself ValidateRequest="false"I know that in MVC it doesn't respect it on the view from what I've read so far. So I put it on the controller action as well. I have tried different setups:
[code]...
Just to see if it made a difference, yet I still get the yellow screen of death. I only want to set it for this view and the specific action in my controller that my post pertains to. Am I missing something?

I am not sure why I can't use pictureboxes when its visibility is set to false?? While the picturebox is not hidden, as part of my game I want the user to be able to guess where the picturebox is which means by clicking on it, it should trigger an event but even when I set this event, nothing happens. When visibility is set to true then the event triggers.
I want to be able to trigger events even if visibility is set to false,

coming from this question i was wondering why:
[Code]....
'this throws an "Object reference not set to an instance of an object"-Exception'
[Code]....
A CType(obj, Boolean) would evaluate to False(just as CBool(obj)), i think because the compiler uses a helper function, but that is not my theme. Why does casting Nothing to Boolean evaluates to False, whereas casting an object that is Nothing to Boolean throws an Nullreference-Exception? Does that make sense?

Its my understanding that by adding the ScaffoldColumn(false) annotation to an property in a class, that property will not added to the view when doing Add View. However even though i have added scaffoldcolumn false to properties i dont want added to a Create form, they are still rendered inthe create view. Is ScaffoldColumn broken? On page 552 in Pro ASP.NET MVC 3 Framework by Freeman and Sanderson, it states "If we want to exclude a property from the generated HTML, we can use ScaffoldColumn attribute. When the scaffolding helpers see the ScaffoldColumn attribute, they skip over the property entirely; no hidden input elements will be generated and no details of this property will be included in the generated HTML.
" Also the MVC Music Store PDF on p 77 indicates that the attrtibute will do the same -"Allows hiding fields from editor forms".They add it to the AlbumId property and then when the app is run AlbumId field is not shown in the browser. Is this attr broken?If i change a html helper to DisplayFor it does not appear in the form regardless of whether scaffoldcolumn is present. For example i dont have scaffoldcolumn false on Property PostTitle but if i change @Html.EditorFor(Function(model) model.PostTitle) to displayfor then it does not render regardless of the scaffoldcolumn attr. Also my Create view is strongly typed to @ModelType RiderDesignMvcBlog.Core.Entities.Post?

I have an asp:checkbox control on an aspx page I am working on. This checkbox is within a custom control and previously was posting back every time it was clicked. I am in the process of ajaxifying the page and have come across a problem. When I remove the attribute AutoPostBack="True" from the asp:checkbox, the vb code returns False when I check myCheckbox.checked (this is on a postback else where on the page what has not be ajaxified), even though I can see the box is indeed checked.
I am assuming that because the checkbox no longer posts back, for some reason the VB code (or the view state maybe) doesn't see it as having been checked. Is this correct, and if so, how to I correct it?

From what I can tell, the main purpose of a PagedDataSource is to allow paging of a datasource before being bound to a server control.
If this is the main purpose of this control, why is the AllowPaging attribute's default value False?
I'm only asking as often I will forget to set this as True causing confusion when it doesn't work.

Simple question, I have an application and dependant on whether you are in the administration system or on the public website I want to show different results. Example: in the database for a news story in the administration I may set the column value 'showonsite' to false. So I would like this to show in the administration panel only and not on the live site.
My question is, because I require the same information just with the only one column change, live site to only show true values and administration to show both. What is the most effective way of achieving this without copy paste of code?
